Longtime 60 Minutes producer Jeff Fager is stepping down as chairman of CBS News. Fager will return to the newsmagazine, with a contract through 2019. “When Leslie Moonves asked me to take the job of chairman, we agreed that when the time was right I would be able to return to 60 Minutes full-time,” said Fager. “I can’t imagine a better time for that than right now.” David Rhodes, president of CBS News since 2011, will assume leadership of the division. Said CBS CEO Les Moonves, “
Jeff has convinced me that the time has arrived for the next step in the plan we implemented almost four years ago – for Jeff to return to an exclusive focus on a broadcast that defines the greatness of CBS, and for David to assume the sole leadership of CBS News.”

IN THE NEWS
Now Bill Cosby has been erased from TV Land, amid revived allegations of multiple sexual assaults. Following the leads of Netflix, which put a hold on a Cosby special that was to premiere the day after Thanksgiving, and NBC’s scrapping of a Cosby comedy in development, TV Land has stopped airing reruns of The Cosby Show.
Comedy Central announced its “next great late-night franchise,” The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore, will premiere Monday, January 19 at 11:30p. Wilmore takes the slot from Stephen Colbert’s The Colbert Report, signing off December 18; Colbert slides into David Letterman’s seat on CBS’s Late Show in 2015.
Ahead of the arrival of new President of Discovery Channel Rich Ross in January, Ed Sabin is exiting his role as COO for Discovery and TLC. “In light of recent management and structural changes in the leadership of the company, the opportunity to be across multiple businesses in an operational role is no longer available,” Sabin said in a memo to staff. “As a consequence, the company and I have decided to amicably part ways.” Dolores Gavin, EVP development and production for the East Coast, is also out, with Denise Contis, who has held that role for the West Coast, now covering both territories.
Longmire, cancelled by A&E in August, will live again on Netflix. Season four of the Warner Horizon Television production is set to stream in 2015. The crime thriller averaged 5.6 million viewers for season three, but skewed older – not a problem for subscription-based Netflix.
Fox’s Empire gets the star treatment for its debut Wednesday, January 7 at 9p. The drama set in the music business will premiere with limited interruptions, after the season premiere of American Idol.
With time slots tight, CBS Television Distribution is not taking Man in the Middle, starring Jeff O’Connell and wife Rebecca Romijn, into syndication this fall, reports Broadcasting and Cable. The show could resurface in 2016.
A lawsuit by ten American Idol contestants alleging they were victims of racial discrimination was dismissed by a federal judge on Thursday. U.S. District Judge Naomi Reice Buchwald said most of the claims were brought to late to be considered, and Chris Golightly, a 2010 contestant disqualified because he had been under contract as a member of a band before joining the show, could not prove race was a factor in his elimination because a white contestant had been booted for the same reason in 2009.
NatGeo’s six-hour miniseries, Eat: The Story of Food, launching tonight, will include PSAs each night, including a custom spot taped by First Lady Michelle Obama for her Let’s Move! campaign, and a PSA from No Kid Hungry. A free, downloadable healthy eating guide, with alternatives to fast food from an array of celebs (Paul McCartney, Susan Sarandon, Wolfgang Puck) also promotes donating food to those in need. “Our goal at the network has always been for EAT to be not just a television series, but part of a bigger conversation about every person’s relationship with food,” said Courteney Monroe, CEO of the National Geographic Channels.
Travel Channel has partnered with the U.S. Travel Association to help spread the message of the personal, business and social benefits of using earned time off. Travel, the association’s first media partner, will support the initiative to its linear and non-linear audiences.
