CYNOPSISSPORTS
11.21.14

Good morning. It’s Friday, November 21, 2014, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

ESPN laid out plans for its eighth consecutive year Jimmy V Week for Cancer Research, which will launch on Wednesday, Dec. 3, across all domestic ESPN platforms to drive awareness of and donations to The V Foundation for Cancer Research. Last year, Jimmy V Week raised a record $1.8 million, bringing the seven-year total of contributions to more than $8.2 million. The event starts at 7p that evening with a simulcast of former NC State coach Jim Valvano’s 1993 ESPYs speech across ESPN domestic media networks, as well as on the ABC SuperSign in Times Square. The simulcast of the speech on all platforms includes an introduction by cancer survivor, Good Morning America host and 2013 Arthur Ashe Courage Award Winner Robin Roberts.

In addition to custom PSAs and Jimmy V Week content, graphics and executions that will appear in Monday Night Football, the MLS Cup and college sports programming throughout the initiative, programming includes the Jimmy V Men’s and Women’s Basketball Classics, features and vignettes in game telecasts and studio programming across platforms, special content and live chats on ESPN.com and social activation across ESPN and The V Foundation social platforms.

ON THE AIR

Sports fans with Dish Network are able to exhale a sigh of relief, for now, after CBS and Dish agreed to a temporary extension to continue programming amid a rough carriage fee dispute that threatens to yank SEC and NFL games from their channels. The companies avoided a potential blackout of local CBS stations in some of the country’s biggest markets. The deal was set to end yesterday and negotiations are ongoing.

After a great original run, Spike TV will re-broadcast the record-setting Bellator 131 event on tonight at 9p. Bellator 131 was the most watched fight card in franchise history, and the Ortiz-Bonnar fight was the most watched MMA fight this year on cable.

Speaking of ratings, NFL telecasts were the three most-watched shows on television last week, according to Nielsen, with the FOX national telecast (anchored by Eagles/Packers) leading the pack with 26.5 million average viewers. The Patriots/Colts matchup on NBC’s Sunday Night Football took second for the week, averaging 20.8 million viewers, followed by the CBS single window (mostly Broncos-Rams and Raiders-Chargers) of 17.9 million viewers. The league is now 11 for 11 in leading the weekly viewership charts.

ESPN continues its coverage of the 2014 MLS Cup Playoffs with the first leg in Western Conference Championship on Sunday at 5p with the Los Angeles Galaxy/Seattle Sounders on ESPN. Adrian Healey, Taylor Twellman and sideline reporter Monica Gonzalez will provide English-language commentary. Alexi Lalas will be on-site for studio segments.

Elsewhere, the 2014 Formula One Drivers’ Championship is set to be decided on Sunday at 8a on NBCSN, with Mercedes teammates Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg vying to win the F1 title at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Race coverage begins with a special 60-minute edition of F1 Countdown at 7a on NBCSN. Leigh Diffey has the call and will be joined by analyst David Hobbs, Steve Matchett and Will Buxton.

Last day for early bird discounts for the Cynopsis Sports Social Media Summit on Dec. 8! Don’t miss speeches from Twitter’s Laura Froelich, Facebook’s Dan Reed, Bleacher Report’s Dorth Raphaely and Major League Gaming’s Mike Sepso. Next week, we will announce our inaugural Hall of Fame inductee. Make sure to register at sportssocialmediasummit.com.

ESPN locked in its teams for its 2015 ESPN Events early-season men’s basketball tournaments, which will  span early-November and run through the Christmas holiday, including the Gildan Charleston Classic, Puerto Rico Tip-Off, DIRECTV Wooden Legacy and Orlando Classic. The Armed Forces Classic on Nov. 13, 2015 will include Gonzaga and Pittsburgh; while The State Farm Champions Classic on Nov. 17 will once again showcase Kansas, Michigan State, Kentucky vs. Duke. The Gildan Charleston Classic on Nov. 19, 20 & 22 sees Bradley, George Mason, Long Beach State, Mississippi, Oklahoma State, Seton Hall, Towson and Virginia. Meanwhile, the Puerto Rico Tip-Off spotlights Butler, Miami (Fla.), Minnesota, Mississippi State, Missouri State, Temple, Texas Tech and Utah. Wrapping it up on Nov. 26, 27 & 29 will be the DIRECTV Wooden Legacy with Arizona, Boise State, Boston College, Evansville, Michigan State, Providence, Santa Clara and UC Irvine as well as the Orlando Classic featuring Alabama, Dayton, Iowa, Notre Dame, Southern California, Wichita State, Xavier and a team to be named at a future date.

ESPN also announced plans to open the 2015 college football season with North Dakota State at Montana in an FCS Kickoff matchup on Saturday, Aug. 29, at 3:30p on ESPN. Meanwhile, ESPNU will exclusively reveal the 24 teams that will compete in this season’s NCAA Division I Football Championship on Sunday, Nov. 23, at 11a, hosted by Anish Shroff with analysts Jay Walker and Craig Haubert. The program will include the announcement of the first- and second-round sites.

Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel is back on Nov. 25 at 9p on HBO and will feature segments that include a look at Mark Cuban; pay a visit to Watts, Los Angeles, for a look at a football team bridging the gap between communities and cops; and showcase six-year-old surfer Quincy Symonds.

SiriusXM locked in former NBA head coach and 2013 NBA Coach of the Year George Karl as an analyst for SiriusXM NBA Radio, where he will debut today on NBA Today, which runs from 3-6p.

Feherty returns to Golf Channel on Nov. 25 at 10p with an interview travels to the Georgia coast for an in-depth conversation with PGA TOUR pro Zach Johnson. Season 4 of the show concludes with Los Angeles Clippers head coach Doc Rivers on Dec. 2 and Dan Patrick, NBC’s Football Night in America co-host and host of The Dan Patrick Show, on Dec. 9.

SPONSORSHIP & PROMOTION

The NBA and the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) are launching a new, annual Basketball without Borders (BWB) Global Camp in conjunction with NBA All-Star. The inaugural camp will be held February 13-15 at Baruch College in Manhattan as part of NBA All-Star 2015 in New York City, with Nike on-board as the official partner.

ESPN teams up with the National Recreation and Park Association for a new initiative, dubbed the Access to Sports program. The pairing will award grants to local park and recreation departments to improve and expand their youth sports programs, particularly in underserved communities. The $150,000 grant will help purchase needed equipment, make improvements in facilities and help local parks and recreation expand their offerings to give more children the opportunity to participate in community-based sports. Communities will include LA, Hartford, Miami, Chicago, Charlotte, New York and Austin.

Other coverage through IMG and Learfield this year will include TuneIn’s growing hockey coverage, with a total of 8 teams.
