The Ad Council held its 63rd Annual Public Service Award Dinner at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York, honoring Shantanu Narayen, President and CEO of Adobe. James Corden, of CBS’ The Late Late Show, hosted the event, which concluded with a live performance from Sheryl Crow in front of the more than 1,400 prominent executives from the media, advertising, and corporate communities. “Wednesday night’s dinner was truly incredible,” Lisa Sherman, president and CEO, The Ad Council, tells Cynopsis. “There was a collective and palpable feeling in the room that we all have the power to create meaningful change. The personal stories we shared from our Bullying Prevention, Love Has No Labels, Meals on Wheels and High School Equivalency campaigns represent millions of people who benefit from our campaigns. I’m so inspired by all that our industry has done and will continue to do for social causes.”
The first batch of presenters were announced for the 2016 American Music Awards. They include Matt Bomer, Ciara, Nina Dobrev, Robert Downey Jr., Taraji P. Henson, Julianne Hough, Karlie Kloss, Heidi Klum, Zoe Saldana, Teyana Taylor and Steven Yeun. The group join hosts Gigi Hadid and Jay Pharoah, as well as previously announced performers. The fan-voted award show broadcasts live from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday, November 20 at 8p on ABC.
AARP announced that Morgan Freeman will receive the 2016 Movies for Grownups Career Achievement Award on Monday, February 6 at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Los Angeles. “At a certain point in life, if you’ve had some success, awards start to fall from the sky. But this one really means something,” Freeman told AARP The Magazine. “I started my movie career at 50 and some of the best years happened since then. I get a lot of pats on the back – they’re all over the place – but this one’s more than fun, it’s priceless.” In addition to film, Freeman hosts Science’s Through the Wormhole with Morgan Freeman.
The sixth ATX Television Festival rolls out its first panels and programming for June 8 to 11 in Austin, TX. Among the highlights are reunions for Designing Women and Northern Exposure. The Designing Women panel features creator/EP Linda Bloodworth-Thomason and stars Delta Burke, Annie Potts, Jean Smart, Gerald McRaney, Hal Holbrook and Douglas Barr. PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
FOX ordered Missing American Woman (wt), a female-centered comedy from New Girl co-EPs Matt Fusfeld and Alex Cuthbertson and EP Jake Kasdan. Show centers on a sheltered girl who never worked a day in her life. When she goes missing after a shipwreck, she embraces the chance to start over, working at a remote resort.
EPIX issued second-season renewals to its first two original scripted series, drama Berlin Station and dramedy Graves. Each show received 10-episode orders. Production begins in early spring.
E! picked up a third season of WAGS and a second season of WAGS Miami. Produced by Machete Productions, the franchise takes viewers into the lives of professional athletes from the perspective of the women on the side lines. The new eight-episode seasons of WAGS and WAGS Miami will air in 2017.
Oxygen Media is growing its development slate with three new series. Social Girls follows influential media mavens; Review Rage is a comedic reenactment of online reviews told from both sides, and Love to Hate explores how celebrities’ fall from grace can be catastrophic in the digital age. “These projects tap into the various ways that our young, savvy, multicultural female audience interacts with social media,” said Cori Abraham, SVP development and international for Oxygen Media. “We hope to shed a fun and positive light on how this generation flourishes in the digital age.”
NBC renewed medical drama The Night Shift. Last summer, the show averaged a 1.4/5 share in A18-49 and 6.8 million viewers overall in Live+SD Nielsens, making it the #1 summer drama on the Big 4 networks.
Baby Cow, the film and TV production company co-founded by Steve Coogan, acquired novel Swing Time, a story of friendship, music and true identity, from Zadie Smith. Smith will adapt the book with Nick Laird for television.
NEW & RETURNING SERIES
Mariah’s World bows on E! and Bravo on Sunday, December 4 at 9p, with subsequent episodes airing on E! Sundays at 9p. Series giving viewers a peek into the life of the singing superstar will air globally on E!’s 15 international channels across North America, Europe, Asia, Australia, New Zealand, Africa and Latin America.
FYI set a premiere date for Kiss Bang Love, where singles choose a potential mate based on blindfolded kissing. The series, from the creators and producers of Married at First Sight, bows Tuesday, January 3 at 10p.
ABC game shows Match Game and To Tell the Truth both return in January. To Tell the Truth is back Sunday, January 1 at 9p. Match Game makes its debut Wednesday, January 4 at 10p.
TV One talker Donnie After Dark, hosted by Donnie Simpson, premieres on Thursday, November 24 at 11p.
Revolt TV and Play.it, CBS Radio’s podcast network, teamed to bring hip-hop podcast, Drink Champs, to Sean “Diddy” Combs’ music network in January 2017. Hosted by Queens rapper N.O.R.E. and Miami hip-hop pioneer DJ EFN, Drink Champs features uncut conversation with friends and fellow hip-hop artists over drinks, discussing everything from current events and old-school stories to hip-hop history.
Showtime drama Homeland is back Sunday, January 15 at 9p. Season six returns to U.S. soil to focus on the aftermath of a U.S. presidential election and the transition between election day and the inauguration for a female president-elect.

Smithsonian Channel airs two-hour documentary, Hockney, on Monday, December 12 at 8p. Artist David Hockney gave access to his personal archive of photographs and films for the project.
Modern Family’s Sarah Hyland hosts one hour special Lip Sync Battle Shorties, premiering Sunday, December 11 at 8p on Nickelodeon. A spinoff of Spike’s Lip Sync Battle, the show spotlights everyday kids lip syncing their favorite songs.
The Dick Van Dyke Show Now in Living Color!, a one-hour special featuring two newly colorized back-to-back classic episodes of the 1960s series, bows Sunday, December 11 at 8p on CBS. Series creator and co-star Carl Reiner personally supervised the colorization of the episodes.
Two-hour ID documentary Until Proven Innocent, the story of Hannah Overton, wrongfully convicted in the death of her foster son from salt poisoning, premieres Thursday, December 1 at 9p.
Triumph Games, a special featuring highlights from the The Power Triumph Games, airs Saturday, November 19 at 2p on CBS. The original three-part series saw ten U.S. military veteran athletes compete to win a $50,000 cash prize.
StarTalk with Neil deGrasse Tyson features Ben Stiller and explores the science of comedy, movies and life on Monday November 21 at 11p on National Geographic.
HDNET MOVIES presents seven days of music-themed films paired with documentaries in a “Not So Silent Nights” marathon. Presented by STYX’s Tommy Shaw, it bows Monday, December 5 at 7p. The weeklong event includes Elvis Presley, Janis Joplin, Bob Marley, Roger Waters, Dave Navarro, and The Who.
HBO set a premiere date for the sixth and final season of Girls. The Lena Dunham comedy returns Sunday, February 12. In addition, Pete Holmes comedy Crashing is set to bows Sunday, February 19.

Holly Hunter will lead the cast of Alan Ball’s (Six Feet Under, True Blood) upcoming HBO drama. The untitled series focuses on a contemporary multi-racial family headed by philosophy professor Greg Bishop and his lawyer wife.
Courtney B. Vance (People v. O.J. Simpson) was tapped to star opposite Felicity Huffman in ABC’s Libby & Malcolm. He’ll play Malcolm to Huffman’s Libby in the blended family comedy.
Marlee Matlin guests on Code Black on Wednesday, December 7 at 10p on CBS. She plays, a deaf patient who arrives at Angels Memorial with her translator after their car rolls over into the L.A. River.
OWN’s Greenleaf announced Season 2 casting moves. Jason Dirden is returning as Basie Skanks, pastor of Greenleaf’s rival church Triumph. Set to recur are Sean Dominic (Code 13: Unreadable) as a record producer and Roshon Fegan (Shake It Up!, Camp Rock) as a rising Christian pop superstar.
Mickaelle X. Bizet joins the upcoming third installment of ABC anthology drama American Crime. She’ll play a nanny.
Freeform has cast its Brown Girls pilot. Punam Patel (Kevin From Work) nabbed one of the lead roles, while Hina Abdullah (The Last Ship) landed the other. Series explores the relationship between Rimmi (Abdullah), an Indian-American aspiring beauty vlogger, and Devi (Patel), a young woman who recently emigrated from India.

Futuresource published findings from the 6th wave of Kids Tech, its consumer research program focused on children aged 3 through to 16 across the US, UK, Germany and China. “The findings are indicating an ever increasing engagement with mobile devices, with a third of kids across the four territories now using them to consumer video every day, this rises to 40 per cent in the US,” said Carl Hibbert, Associate Director of Media & Entertainment at Futuresource.

BET’s Tuesday night premiere of BET Presents Love & Happiness: An Obama Celebration drew an average 1.4 million total viewers and reached a total viewership of 4.2 million and 1.6 million P18-49. It is now BET’s #1 most watched program of the calendar year among P18-49, excluding tentpoles.
IFC’s Stan Against Evil showed significant audience growth in its second week. Across two new episodes that aired back-to-back, the show’s audience grew by more than 40 percent in total viewers and 22 percent in A18-49 over its premiere night in Live+3 ratings. The show also saw significant increases in time-shifted viewership, with the audience growing 84 percent among A18-49 and up 70 percent in total views within three days.
Telemundo Deportes’ “Rumbo al Mundial” World Cup Qualifier between Panama and Mexico (Tuesday, November 15 at 9p) delivered 3.2 million total viewers and 1.8 million A18 to 49, according to Nielsen. The match reached in total 6 million total viewers. Locally, the game ranked as the most watched show in the time period in Los Angeles, Miami, Houston, San Francisco, and Phoenix among A18 to 49, regardless of language.
Animal Planet’s Pit Bulls and Parolees on Saturday helped the net land a spot as a Top 5 ad-supported cable network in its timeslot among W25-54 (#4) with a 0.84 rating in Live+3. The premiere also ranked among the Top 10 in its timeslot among Total Viewers (#9), A18-49 (#9) and W18-49 (#9). The episode rose 28 percent from last season’s season premiere among A25-54.
