Good morning. It’s Thursday November 17, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
NBC takes the field with Thursday Night Football tonight, lining up Saints/Panthers at 7:30p on the channel, NFL Network and Twitter. To drive awareness and viewership, the company is launching a comprehensive social media and marketing plan to promote its newest property, with content that will include a NBCUniversal GIF relay using the hashtag #TNFHandoff that will see a football emoji will be incorporated into GIFs posted on social media accounts from networks and shows. Twitter will also see a different celebrity Twitter ambassador live-tweet the game each week beginning with Chef Emeril Lagasse live-tweeting tonight. NBC Sports also created custom TNF Snapchat filters that will be available for fans.
Of course, NBCUniversal will also surround its coverage of TNF with its Big Event Strategy, drumming up promotion and content that will include properties such as TODAY, Tonight Show, Weather Channel, MSNBC, Telemundo, Golf Channel, the Universal Theme Parks and more.
ON THE AIR
NBC Sports Group announced that Mike Tirico will take on play-by-play for four NFL games on NBC this fall, beginning with the Packers/Redskins battle on SNF this weekend. Tirico then joins Cris Collinsworth in the booth for NBC’s Pittsburgh/Indianapolis Thanksgiving night game as well as the Kansas City/Denver showdown on Nov. 27. Tirico and Collinsworth call the N.Y. Giants/Philadelphia TNF game Dec. 22. Tirico also joins Doug Flutie in the booth for the Dec. 17 Miami/N.Y. Jets game and Dec. 25 for Baltimore/Pittsburgh games, which will be televised on NFL Network.
Speaking of NBC Sports, the company showcases NASCAR Sprint Cup and XFINITY Series Championship coverage from Homestead-Miami Speedway this weekend with the Sprint Cup Championship race on Sunday at 2p and the XFINITY Series concluding on Saturday at 2p on NBCSN. its 2016 season Saturday at 2 p.m. ET on NBCSN. Sunday’s coverage also includes a tribute piece honoring Tony Stewart, prior to his final Sprint Cup race. Coverage kicks off Friday with practice at 12:30p on NBCSN.
ESPN saw Kansas’ upset-win over Duke generate a total live audience of 2,444,000 viewers, up 28% over last year’s Kansas vs. Michigan State game. The streaming audience of 83,000 average minute viewers marks ESPN’s most streamed men’s college basketball game ever.
In other ratings news, Telemundo Deportes’ Rumbo al Mundial World Cup Qualifier between Panama/Mexico on Tuesday delivered 3.2 million total viewers with 1.8 million adults 18-49, according to Nielsen. Locally the game ranked as the most watched show in the time period in Los Angeles, Miami, Houston, San Francisco, and Phoenix, among adults 18 to 49 regardless of language.

In WWE news, Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings and Arlington Mayor Jeff Williams announced that WrestleMania 32 generated $170.4 million in economic impact for the Dallas/Arlington region this past April, according to a study conducted by the Enigma Research Corporation. That figure marks a new record for WrestleMania’s economic impact and the fifth consecutive year that WrestleMania generated more than $100 million in economic impact for its host region. Overall, 72% of fans that attended WrestleMania were from outside the greater Dallas/Arlington region and stayed an average of 3.9 nights.
Meanwhile, WWE locked in a deal with SKY Deutschland for a new multi-year agreement to distribute WWE’s premier PPV events starting this Monday with Survivor Series in addition to televising Raw and SmackDown live on SKY Sports beginning April 2017. With this agreement, SKY plc now distributes Raw and SmackDown in three of its biggest markets Germany, Italy, and the UK.
Finally, E! announced that it has picked up season two Total Bellas, the spin-off of network series Total Divas. The second season will run eight one-hour episodes and showcase WWE Superstars Nikki Bella and John Cena as they temporarily relocate to Phoenix, AZ to help Brie Bella and Daniel Bryan through their first pregnancy. Season two of the WWE and Bunim-Murray Productions series will premiere in 2017.
ESPN serves up season-ending Barclays ATP World Tour Finals coverage from the O2 in London this week with daily coverage on ESPN2 today and running through the championship live on Sunday at 1p. Patrick McEnroe, Darren Cahill and Brad Gilbert will be on site to call the championship on Sunday.
NHL Network will showcase naming day, as the Las Vegas NHL franchise – led by owner Bill Foley, general manager George McPhee and NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman – unveil the team’s name and logo on Tuesday at 5:30p. The event will feature live entertainment, activities for children, local youth hockey players skating on an outdoor rink, appearances by former NHL players and the sale of official team merchandise. NHL.com will also stream coverage starting at 6p.
In regional action, FOX Sports Indiana announced the first-ever Basketball Day for Dec. 10, lining up five games from high school through the NBA that will be played across Indianapolis starting at 9a with 13 hours of continuous live coverage. FOX Sports Indiana will broadcast live throughout the day from a set on Georgia Street in Downtown Indianapolis outside Bankers Life Fieldhouse. “We expect Basketball Day in Indiana to become an annual event,” said FOX Sports Indiana senior vice president and general manager Jack Donovan. “Indiana has such a rich basketball tradition. Basketball Day in Indiana is a full day dedicated to celebrating the sport.”
CSN New England announced an all-new, original weekly 30-minute Celtics show titled Celtics Post-Up. The series debuts tonight at 6:30p, with Celtics reporter/host Amanda Pflugrad hosting the new show, with CSN’s Brian Scalabrine and Kyle Draper as analysts. The series will look to offer viewers “unfiltered debate, commentary and discussion surrounding the most ‘talked about’ Celtics/NBA topics of the day, as identified by social media.”

The US Ski and Snowboard Association announced that Liberty Mutual Insurance renewed its relationship as the official insurance partner of the US Ski Team, US Snowboarding and US Freeskiing through the 2019-2020 season. With the renewal, Liberty Mutual Insurance also signs on as the title sponsor of NASTAR, the world’s largest recreational alpine ski racing program. “Liberty Mutual Insurance’s dedication to NASTAR allows for a whole new audience of skiers and snowboarders to have a deeper and more meaningful connection with USSA,” said USSA Chief Marketing Officer Michael Jaquet. “The NASTAR sponsorship allows both organizations to partner together to expand participation and awareness of recreational ski racing in America. Competitor Group, operators of the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series, locked in a new multi-event sponsorship agreement with United Airlines that will see the brand become title sponsor of two Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series events DC on March 11 and San Francisco on March 26 – beginning in 2017. “We could not be more excited to welcome United Airlines to the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series, around two of our flagship events on the east and west coasts,” said Josh Furlow, President of CGI. “United has a tremendous history of supporting athletes and Olympians and we look forward to providing a growing international platform for their brand which offers endless opportunities for collaboration.”
AEG is teaming with Pepperdine University to offer a post-graduate level and undergraduate-level educational experience blending AEG’s expertise and international network of venues, sports properties and franchises and live entertainment assets with Pepperdine University’s academics. The agreement, brokered by AEG Global Partnerships, names Pepperdine University the exclusive Education Partner of STAPLES Center, L.A. LIVE, and the LA Kings and will provide Pepperdine University the opportunity to build out a branded classroom within STAPLES Center.
Ahead of his run for another NASCAR Championship on Sunday, Jimmie Johnson’s ‘Ride of Your Life’ video series in partnership with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina is boasting a 65.15% completion rate and a 9.6% click through rate to watch more video, which are both well above the industry benchmarks of 47.0% and 4.5%, respectively. The series was created in partnership with Intersport.
DIGITAL & STREAMING
Twitter added an Android TV app to broaden its TV reach ahead of TNF. The new platform offers live streams as well as popular tweets and comes two months after the company first launched apps for Apple TV, Fire TV and Xbox One.
TuneIn announced its college basketball lineup, which includes live play-by-play and team-specific programming from a total of 149 universities courtesy of partnerships with Learfield, IMG, FOX Sports, OUTFRONT Media, Westwood One, ESPN Radio and Compass Media Networks, plus independent agreements with the University of Kentucky and Arizona State University. “2016 has been a big growth year for TuneIn’s sports content offering,” said Kevin Straley, TuneIn Chief Content Officer. “We are excited to continue our key partnerships, which allow us to bring a record-number of college basketball stations to dedicated fans everywhere.”
Digital sports platform The Fumble reports that its growth trends continues in October, notching a 275% increase in subscribers year-to-year, growing from 188K subscribers to 504K subscribers with a 325% rise in lifetime views. The channel offers avid sports fans highlights, big plays, and day of sports news across the NFL, NBA, MLB, and UFC.

FOX Sports named Terri Hines as the company’s new Executive Vice President of Communications. Joining from Nike, Hines will lead communications across FOX Sports’ multi-platform portfolio, which includes the sports television arm of FOX Broadcasting Company, FS1, FS2, its 22 regional sports networks, FOX Sports Digital, FOX Deportes, and its joint ventures. She will begin her new role on December 5.
