Good morning. It’s Wednesday November 16, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

PlayStation will now see two College Football Playoff teams play on its turf, locking in a deal with the Fiesta Bowl to become the new title sponsor of the game. Set to take place on Dec. 31 this year, the PlayStation Fiesta Bowl will be played at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale. As part of the agreement with ESPN, the category exclusive multiyear deal also makes PlayStation the official gaming and virtual reality sponsor of the CFP. ESPN will collaborate with the brand on multimedia content integrations across ESPN programming, featuring the PlayStation brand messaging, “Greatness Awaits,” to drive excitement and anticipation for the CFP.

“As leaders in entertainment and technology, ESPN and PlayStation share some of the most passionate fans in the world,” said Ed Erhardt, President, ESPN Global Sales and Marketing. “The demographic drawn to PlayStation also consumes ESPN content, and the Fiesta Bowl is an excellent vehicle to reach those passionate college football fans.”

ON THE AIR

With more data in the books, FOX Sports reports that Week 10’s America’s Game of the Week between the Cowboys/Steelers ranked as the highest-rated and most-watched game of the 2016 NFL season, delivering 28.88 million viewers on average, with a 16.4/30 household rating/share, per Nielsen national figures. The late Sunday afternoon doubleheader window is now averaging a 14.7/28 with 25.9 million viewers, off 3% from last year’s audience. Meanwhile, the network reports that FOX NFL Sunday is averaging a 3.0/8 and 4.73 million viewers.

Saturday saw ABC’s coverage of Michigan/Iowa rank as the most-watched game of week 11 across all networks pulling a total live audience of 6,539,000 viewers, that is up 10% compared to 2015’s week 11 matchup.

Univision Deportes scored with its coverage of Friday’s World Cup qualifying match between USA/Mexico, averaging 4.6 million viewers with 2.5 million Adults 18-49. This marks the best rated World Cup qualifier match on any network since the USA and Mexico match in March 2013.

The Seahawk’s Russell Wilson threw his hat in the ring for Seattle’s potential NBA and NHL franchises, announcing a partnership with the Sonics Arena Group to help bring franchises to the market. Wilson made the announcement on Twitter and he now joins partners that include Chris Hansen, Wally Walker, and Erik and Pete Nordstrom for the endeavor.

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman told reports that any decision on NHL participation in the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics will likely be settled around January. "Whether it’s Jan. 1 or 15th or 20th, that’s not the issue," Commissioner Bettman said, per the AP. "This isn’t drifting into the spring." Bettman told TSN that the timetable is dictated by the League’s need to lock in its schedule for the 2017-18 season, and the fact that the International Ice Hockey Federation and International Olympic Committee need time to come up with a contingency plan for the men’s ice hockey tournament should the NHL not attend.

The inaugural season of NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series on FOX and FS1 completes its first year of the deal with the 24 events averaging 634,000 viewers to mark a 24% increase over their performance on ESPN and ESPN 2 last year. Overall, four events (Las Vegas, Atlanta, Englishtown and Indianapolis), topped the one-million viewer mark, with four more scoring at least 750,000 viewers.

Twitter sold its first ads for the platform’s deal with the NBA. Adweek writes that the company locked in American Express and JBL Harman as sponsors, with the brands appearing in and around The Starters and The Warmup.

Whistle Sports and NBC Sports teamed up with Maxus to make a push for Thursday Night Football, launching a new petition on Change.org featuring social sports influencers that include Dude Perfect, Indi Cowie and Legendary Shots in a move to start the weekend one day earlier, at least for football season. The digital campaign features a video PSA asking the President’s approval to make Thursday Night the official start to everyone’s three day weekends.

Lou D’Ermilio, former head of FOX Sports media relations, has launched LOUD Communications, a boutique sports communications firm providing strategic, personalized, senior level communications services focused primarily on the sports media industry. D’Ermilio, who will serve as president of the company, brings a career that includes coordinating messaging for events that include the Super Bowl, Olympic Winter Games, World Series, NCAA basketball and football championships, Stanley Cup Finals, Daytona 500, UFC, golf’s U.S. Open, FIFA Women’s World Cup and UEFA Champions League, as well as channel launches such as FOX Sports, Big Ten Network, FOX Sports 1, FOX Sports 2 and FOX Sports Net.

DIGITAL & STREAMING

NASCAR detailed is social plans ahead of the final race in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup with content plans via Snapchat, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Snapchat users will receive a behind-the-scenes look at the Ford Ecoboost 400 from NASCAR fans sharing their race-day experiences as part of a Snapchat Live Story. Meanwhile, NASCAR will stream the in-car camera from Tony Stewart’s No. 14 Chevrolet on Facebook Live as the legendary driver wraps up his fulltime NASCAR Sprint Cup Series career. Twitter and NASCAR created a special, Chase-specific Twitter emoji while NASCAR commissioned illustrators to create custom Instagram images during The Chase.

The Dallas Mavericks unveiled three new digital streams that will offer exclusive content for fans, including a channel on Roku that will showcase behind-the-scenes videos from players and coaches, long form content like the 2011 NBA Championship Parade and highlights from previous games. The Mavs will also become the first NBA team to have utilized the live streaming app Live.ly and the music video community app Musical.ly to showcase Mavs players’ personalities.

Campus Insiders detailed plans to produce thirty-eight regular season men’s basketball games this season. Campus Insiders’ talent team includes Shae Peppler, Jordan Cornette and Ray Crawford who will be on-site at a combined 13 match-ups serving as play-by-play announcers, color analysts and sideline reporters. Coverage began last night with Middle Tennessee State/Murray State.

ESPORTS

Team Liquid announced a new partnership with Monster Energy. The team unveiled the new deal on its site, with Matt Simpson, Senior Marketing Manager for Monster Energy Gaming and Esports stating that “This isn’t about us at Monster Energy, it is about the cool s*** that Team Liquid is doing in esports. They are an amazing organization and we just want to be a part of it. I mean, if Ice-T and Magic Johnson are talking about an esports team, you have to pay attention!

MLG formalized the eight North American Overwatch teams that will be hitting Las Vegas to battle for a share of $100,000. Teams are set to include Team EnVyUs, NRG eSports, Cloud9, Fnatic, CompLexity Gaming, FaZe Clan, Team Liquid and Rise Nation between Dec. 16-18. MLG Las Vegas will also feature a $100,000 Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare competition that will serve as the first major LAN event of the 2017 Call of Duty World League.

ROSTER MOVES

Retired General Martin E. Dempsey has been elected USA Basketball Chairman for the 2017-20 quadrennium. The announcement was made Monday following the USA Basketball Annual Board of Directors meeting in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He succeeds Jerry Colangelo, who announced earlier this month that he would not seek a third term as Chairman.
