IN THE NEWS

Tonight is a turning point for National Geographic’s rebrand launch, announced last month. “With the premiere of MARS tonight – the biggest show in our network’s history – we hope to give our viewers an entirely fresh experience on the network,” Courteney Monroe, CEO, National Geographic Global Networks, tells Cynopsis. “MARS is an exciting new format that represents our ambition to become a leading destination for premium science, adventure and exploration content. At the same time, we are rebranding not only the network, but every aspect of National Geographic, including the iconic 128-year old magazine – timed to the premiere of MARS. Our new tagline, ‘Further,’ conveys to viewers, readers, advertisers and creators that we embody a relentless pursuit to go deeper, to push boundaries and to be pioneering in everything we do.”

Talker Steve Harvey will fold after five successful seasons, but the host is partnering with IMG for a new daytimer. Slated to launch in September, the entry will be distributed by NBCUniversal Domestic Television, which also handles Harvey’s current talk show. The setting will move from Chicago to LA, where the busy host tapes NBC’s Little Big Shots and ABC’s Celebrity Family Feud and Funderdome.

After doubling its 10-episode initial order for Not Safe with Nikki Glaser, Comedy Central isn’t taking the sex-themed talk show to season 2. The final episode aired in August. The network is reportedly looking for other opportunities to work with Glaser, a regular guest on Comedy shows including Inside Amy Schumer, Adam Devine’s House Party and The Burn with Jeff Ross.

Donald Trump might tone down his tweeting, the president elect told Lesley Stahl during an interview on 60 Minutes. “If I use it at all, I’m going to be very restrained,” claimed the POTUS-to-be, while also acknowledging of Twitter, “I find it tremendous…there should be nothing we should be ashamed of.” We shall see….

Corey Lewandowski resigned as political commentator for CNN hours after being seen arriving at Trump Tower on Friday, as the new administration was being decided. CNN hired Lewandowski after he was fired as Donald Trump’s campaign manager in June.

Disney’s 3Q16 report hit below Wall Street estimates, with its Media Networks group down 3 percent to $5.7 billion. Operating income for cable nets slipped 13 percent to $1.4 billion, thanks in part to lower advertising and affiliate revenue and higher programming costs for ESPN. But the sports net should benefit from grabbing eyeballs on mobile, said CEO Bob Iger during an earnings call. ESPN “adopts very well to mobile platforms, and that’s where we’re moving. So we feel really good with ESPN. We’re dealing with some near-term issues with ESPN, we’re eyes wide open on that. But we think the long-term revenues are going to be just fine.”

Sophia, Sistine and Scarlet Stallone, daughters of Sylvester, have been named Miss Golden Globe 2017, the first time a trio has received the crown(s). The young women will assist during the NBC broadcast of the Golden Globe Awards on Sunday, January 8 from 8-11p.

Veteran “extreme” meteorologist Reed Timmer has formally joined the AccuWeather Network team, where the storm chaser will continue on-location breaking weather video coverage that expands the company’s video content on cable and digital. “Reed Timmer is at the forefront of in-field severe weather coverage, delivering the most engaging videos that hold expansive, global appeal across AccuWeather platforms,” said John Dokes, GM of AccuWeather Network and AccuWeather Chief Marketing Officer.

Fusion is re-airing its documentary Trumpland, which premiered before the election to explore the groundswell of disenfranchised Americans that ultimately led to the election of Donald Trump. Part of the network’s “The Naked Truth” series, the film will run on Thursday, November 17 and Tuesday, November 22 at 8p, and is available across platforms.

During his last episode until inauguration day, Bill Maher invited Donald Trump to guest on HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher. “It took me eight years to get Obama. Maybe he’ll come on,” said Maher during the live-streamed installment, also noting, “This election gave us permission to smoke weed, and a reason we need to.”

Real Time with Bill Maher, The Kelly File, Late Night with Seth Meyers – which show would you like to see Donald Trump appear on? Let us know what you think in the new Cynopsis poll.

ADVERTISING

Unexpected election results could recalibrate ad deals, wrote Brian Wieser, senior research analyst at Pivotal Research Group. “Still-to-be defined policy choices could impact the economy in difficult-to-predict ways during 2017, and we think this lack of clarity may curtail advertising growth rates,” said Wieser, who estimated U.S. media owners grew ad revenues by 4 percent in the third quarter, less than the 5 percent in 2Q16 and 7 percent in the quarter prior.

Cable news nets CNN, Fox News and MSNBC are reaping election rewards, raking in $184 million in national advertising from October 11-November 10, according to iSpot.tv. A year ago, that number was $68.4 million. The breakdown: $101.1 for Fox news, $63.5 million for CNN and $19.4 million for MSNBC.

Digital ad revenue topped $32 billion, up 19 percent year over year in the first half of 2016, per the IAB Internet Advertising Revenue Report from PwC US. Mobile revenue had the biggest surge, up 89 percent to $15.5 billion.

Jeremy Parsons is co-host of People.com’s daily show, People Now, covering everything from royalty to rappers to real life stories. Parsons was also the (very entertaining) host of Cynopsis’s recent Model D Awards, and he shared a few thoughts about working the celebrity beat.

In what ways would you say People Now augments the overall People brand?

Jeremy Parsons:The great thing we have going for us on People Now is that the People brand has such a loyal fan base that loves the content. Our show strives to bring the pages of People magazine to life through our interviews and other creative segments, while allowing fans to engage with that content in new ways. The show also gives People’s writers and editors the opportunity to have even more of a voice to report their stories.

Who was your favorite interview?

Jeremy Parsons: I can fanboy all day about the celebrities I’ve interviewed. From Chrissy Teigen to Tom Hanks - forget the warnings about never meeting your heroes - I say bring them on! But one of the most meaningful, enlightening interviews I did at People Now was with the husband of Brittany Maynard, Dan Diaz. Brittany championed a "Death with Dignity" campaign while dealing with a terminal illness, and I interviewed Dan not long after his wife died as she wished, surrounded by loved ones. People tracked her story very closely, and the whole thing was simultaneously heartbreaking, but inspiring.

And what have been your most challenging interviews?

Jeremy Parsons:Alison Parker is the news reporter who was tragically shot and killed during a live TV broadcast. I recently interviewed her parents. It was easily one of my most challenging interviews.I think it’s because I’m a dad now, the story struck such a deep chord for me.

What does preparation for an episode look like?

Jeremy Parsons: I work with a great team of producers to research guests. Aside from getting great content, my main goal in an interview is to have an authentic (as you can be in that environment) conversation, have fun, and have the guest walk away feeling good about what just happened. There’s nothing worse than making someone feel uncomfortable. Even if I’m asking about sensitive subjects, I never want someone to feel bad about the experience. It’s all about how you ask!
