CYNOPSISKIDS!
11.12.14

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, November 12, 2014, and this is your first early morning briefing.

TODAY’S TOP NEWS

The sweetest sting: Bee & PuppyCat, the animated series from Adventure Time artist Natasha Allegri, hit 1.6 million views and counting in the first 72 hours after its Nov. 6 debut on Channel Frederator’s Cartoon Hangover YouTube channel. What’s more, the toon is attracting a strong female audience, unusual for animation’s normally male viewership. “It’s the type of series we would have never seen on traditional broadcast previously,” says Fred Seibert of Frederator Studios, which produced the series. The series, of which two episodes have aired so far, already scored the designation of most successfully funded animation project in Kickstarter history after raising nearly $900,000. Produced by Frederator Studios, Bee & Puppycat originally debuted on Cartoon Hangover in July 2013 as a two-part 10-minute short. It became an immediate hit, amassing more than 4 million views. Life’s been good at Frederator. The animation hub signed 158 new channels and expanded subscribership by 600,000 in October.

CynKids was on hand for the giggles and squeals at the White House Monday, when First Lady Michelle Obama and special guest Doc herself–hosted a screening of a Veterans Day-themed episode of Doc McStuffins for military families. So was series creator Chris Nee, who told us she’d always wanted to do an episode focusing on the emotions kids face when a parent is deployed. “I see Doc as a place where we can address topics, and go places some other shows wouldn’t necessarily go,” said Nee, who created Doc as a way to demystify doctor visits for her asthmatic son. Titled “Training Army Al,” the ep aired yesterday on Disney Channel. The series targets kids ages 2-7, and Nancy Kanter, GM/EVP, original programming, Disney Junior Worldwide, says the series has staying power with the older set. “Kids stick around until 6 or 7,” she told us. “They get some of the references the younger kids wouldn’t, so it really does stretch across ages.” A Disney Publishing storybook inspired by the Veterans Day episode will be available Dec. 2. Michelle Obama has made supporting military families and U.S. troops a priority through the Joining Forces initiative focused on employment, education and wellness. She was the keynote speaker during Disney’s inaugural Veteran’s Institute in November 2013.

PROGRAMMING PICKS

Nickelodeon is stuffing Thanksgiving week with new eps of its preschool and live-action series, plus new original movie Santa Hunters, the Nickelodeon HALO Awards hourlong special honoring real-life kids’ commitment to service, and marathons of classics including iCarly and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and The Legend of Korra. The programming feast kicks off with the premieres of the Dora and Friends: Into the City! special “Mystery of the Magic Horses,” on Monday, Nov. 24, at 10a, and then Bubble Guppies “Gobble, Gobble Guppies” on Wednesday, Nov. 26, at 9a.

More on Santa Hunters… The man in the red suit is the focus of a secret investigation in Nick’s new original TV movie Santa Hunters, premiering Friday, Nov. 28, at 7p. Benjamin “Lil P-Nut” Flores Jr. (The Haunted Hathaways), Breanna Yde (The Haunted Hathaways) and Mace Coronel (Nicky Ricky Dicky & Dawn) star in the movie, which follows 9-year-old Alex (Flores) as he sets out to prove to the world that Santa is real. However, unexpected consequences from Alex’s meddling may cause Santa to lose his Christmas powers forever. Santa Hunters is exec-produced by Scott McAboy, Robin Cowie, Christopher C. Dotson, III and Reed Frerichs; and produced by Amy Sydorick, directed by Savage Steve Holland and written by Jamie Nash. Check out a sneak peak here: http://www.nick.com/santahunters/

Hungry? Five new installments of Pass the Plate, the interstitial series designed to inspire good nutrition habits, began airing Saturday on Disney Channel. Hosted by Peyton List and Karan Brar (Jessie), the segments will rotate daily throughout the net’s programming schedule. Pass the Plate began airing in 2008. New installments include visits to Brooklyn Brine and Eagle Street Rooftop Farm in Brooklyn, Tiny But Mighty Popcorn in Shellsburg, Iowa, and Compass Green in Napa and San Francisco.

On Nov. 26, PBS Kids will kick off the holidays with the return of one-hour special Curious George: A Very Monkey Christmas, featuring the monkey and the Man in the Yellow Hat counting down to Christmas. Throughout December, the network will air new holiday-themed eps from series including Odd Squad, Peg + Cat, Thomas & Friends and Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood.

PRODUCTION NOTES

More original kids fodder is headed to Netflix. The streaming goliath and Guru Studio will debut the original spinoff series Justin Time The New Adventures, based on the hit series Justin Time, in early 2016. Netflix VP, content acquisition, Erik Barmack said,  “The series has been a hit for us across several Netflix territories and we expect nothing less for the new series.”

Netflix will also adapt the A Series of Unfortunate Events book series by Lemony Snicket into an original series. The series will be a Netflix production in association with Paramount Television. Paramount was the studio behind the successful 2004 movie.

She’s back on the small screen. Rita Moreno, the Electric Company alumna who’s also one of the few actors to score the quad-crown of Oscar, Emmy, Tony and Grammy wins, is returning to children’s TV to voice a character on Sprout’s upcoming animated series Nina’s World. Moreno will voice Abuelita, the grandmother of 6-year-old Nina in The Goodnight Show spinoff, slated to debut in 2015. Nina’s World is a spinoff from The Good Night Show.

Parts unknown? Anthony Bourdain will guest as famous TV food dude “Anthony Gourmand” in an episode of Nickelodeon’s Sanjay and Craig slated to air 2015. In the ep, Craig is obsessed with the host of TV series "Foodventurer." When Sanjay and Craig discover Gourmand at the Frycade, they convince him he’ll find the ultimate food in Lundgren, but in the end Gourmand believes the ultimate delicacy he should eat is actually Craig. “It’s a little weird seeing my voice coming out of Anthony Gourmand, but my friends have been telling me that I’ve been a cartoon of myself for years, so really I’m kind of used to this,” Bourdain says.

Jeff Foxworthy will return to host and Mark Burnett is exec-producing Fox’s reboot of Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? No word yet on the premiere date or time slot. The original series premiered on Fox in 2007; it ran for five seasons.

Studio 100 Film is bringing Maya the Bee to the North American market via a deal with Shout! Factory. Shout! has secured exclusive U.S. and Canadian distribution rights to Maya the Bee–Movie, including theatrical, home entertainment, digital distribution and broadcast. It plans to roll out the film in theaters, via VOD, SVOD, electronic-sell-through, television and in all packaged media through Shout! Factory Kids in 2015.

HBTY, SESAME STREET!

You’d have to be living in a trash canWait. Not even thereto have missed Sesame Street’s 45th birthday on Monday. Here are some fun facts you may not know about the groundbreaking show:

* Elmo once testified before Congress.

* Four First Ladies have visited the Street: Barbara Bush, Hillary Clinton, Laura Bush and Michelle Obama.

* In 1992, Sesame Street created a TV special where Snuffy’s parents went through a divorce. It never aired.

* Caroll Spinney, who performs Big Bird, has played the role since the first episode.

* Sesame Street has won nine Grammy Awards.

* On the first season of Sesame Street, Oscar the Grouch was orange.

* All of the Sesame Street Muppets have four fingers, except Cookie Monster, who has five.

We also asked a few Sesame devotees to share their fondest memories of the show:

"For me, Sesame Street was always a regular show in our home – and in fact, Count Dracula taught one of my daughters how to count! She is now 27 and still uses his methods to this day." – Barbara Marcus, President/Publisher, Random House Children’s Books

“The early animations of Sesame Street made an indelible mark on my preschool brain. I can’t see a ladybug without the tune of Ladybug Picnic flooding my head or count to ten without that ‘Jive Funk’ twist to it while visualizing a pinball machine.  Favorite puppet moment was whenever Cookie Monster would eat a letter…it just made me want to reach out and eat it, too. I’m always trying to reach that pinnacle when creating shows to this day.”  – Traci Paige Johnson, co-creator, Blues Clues and founder, Yummico

“My fondest Sesame Street memories are the looks on people’s faces when they step on our set for the first time. Whether it is a Make-A-Wish child, a vendor making a delivery, a celebrity or The First Lady…. they light up as soon as they see Hooper’s Store and Oscar’s trash can and they are transported to happy memories.” – Carol-Lynn Parente, Executive Producer, Sesame Street

“The premiere of Sesame Street was the first time a teacher ever told us to watch something on television; so I went home and dutifully watched it every day for the next two years. I always paid attention to the animation in the show, but I also loved the Muppets. I remember a Muppet short where they were singing the song, Windy, and everything was blowing around. That was the first time I realized that there was parody in the show.” –Linda Simensky, VP, Children’s Programming, PBS

“One day I walked on to set to give a note and for some reason I looked up and noticed Snuffy was just hanging out in the corner. I stopped dead in my tracks… How is it possible that my every day involves walking onto one of the most iconic sets in world, giving some of the most talented actors and directors a performance note and walking by a Snuffleupagus on my way to do it?” –Nadine Zylstra, VP, Production/Supervising Producer, Sesame Street

“Growing up, every time I had a banana in my lunchbox I would put it to my ear, pretend I was on the phone, and say, ‘I can’t hear you, I have a banana in my ear.’ Years later when I worked for Sesame Street, I came across a clip of Ernie saying this to Bert. I was flabbergasted, because I was absolutely certain I had made that up. Consciously and subconsciously, Sesame Street had a huge influence on my life and my sense of humor.”  — Meredith Halpern-Ranzer, VP, Creative Services, Sprout, and former Sesame exec

Shanghai Pin Shi Fushi will develop children’s apparel to be sold throughout China at specialty stores, department stores, online shops and wholesale distribution.
