Good morning. It’s Wednesday November 9, 2016, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Tonight’s Finale:
E!: Total Bellas at 8p

And the winner of Election Night among broadcast nets was – NBC, with a 7.0 metered market household rating. ABC was next with 6.1, followed by 4.8 for CBS and 3.0 for Fox. The results are down almost 10 percent versus 2012.

IN THE NEWS

When it came to Latinos, did Donald Trump hit a wall yesterday? Hispanic voters turned out in unprecedented numbers for the presidential election, a surge that got an assist from efforts by U.S. Spanish-language networks over the past months. But will it be enough?

“If there is a story I have been waiting to report during my more than 30 year career, it is the story of the Latino vote awakening,” said Jose Díaz-Balart, anchor of Noticiero Telemundo and NBC Nightly News, Saturday Edition. “It is a privilege to be able to report that our community has become the decisive factor in our country’s presidential election.” “El Poder En Ti,” Telemundo’s effort to inform and empower Hispanic voters nationwide, reached5.5 million total viewers via the #YoDecido PSA campaign, 2.5 million people through #YoDecido’s social media efforts and over 4.7 million page views on the “El Poder En Ti” site.

A spinoff of The Goldbergs, set in the 1990s and starring Bryan Callen, who recurs as high school gym teacher Rick Mellor, is in the works at ABC. The network is teaming with the sitcom’s creator, Adam F. Goldberg on the project, which will center on two high school teachers who become unlikely father figures to the school secretary’s three misfit kids.

CBS is reportedly is getting more serious about a possible merger with Viacom. According to the Wall Street Journal, CBS has hired financial advisors Moelis & Co. and Goldman Sachs to investigate what a merger might look like. Rumors that the companies might try to reunite have been rumbling since their corporate separation in 2006.

According to documents obtained by tech blogger David Zatz, TiVo is developing a cloud-based over-the-air DVR targeted to the retail cord-cutting market, reports FierceCable. “This is a TiVo app that works as user interface for OTA Streaming, Diskless Cloud DVR TiVo Device Mantis,” reads the product description. The project appears to be under development and will be downloaded and tested by TiVo employees, who are on the development team.

A new report says that TV stations’ revenue should total $31 billion in 2016, comprising over-the-air and online advertising, retransmission consent and other revenues. Advisory firm BIA/Kelsey studied 18 station groups: four owned and operated groups, six publicly traded groups and eight privately held TV broadcasters, all of which combined to account for more than 80 percent of total revenue in the industry.

James L. Brooks will receive the Producers Guild of America’s 2017 Norman Lear Achievement Award in Television. The award will be presented at the 28th Annual Producers Guild Awards ceremony on January 28 in Los Angeles. “For decades, Jim Brooks has brought memorable characters, big laughs and above all, a profound sense of humanity into our homes,” said awards chairs Donald De Line and Amy Pascal.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Seth Rogan

and Evan Goldberg’s Point Grey Pictures are producing two comedies via Sony Pictures TV. One is superhero sidekick-themed project written by Mike Rosolio (Lemmings) at FOX.  The other, written by Brad Copeland (Life In Pieces), is about the Illuminati society, the subject of conspiracy theories, at ABC. Both have received script commitment plus penalty.

Phil Lord and Christopher Miller upped their television pod deal at 20th Century TV for 3 more years. Under the new agreement, the pair will continue to develop, write and direct their own comedy projects, as well as supervise other writers’ projects for network and cable under their Lord Miller banner.

Warren Lieberstein, former co-EP of The Office, is developing a new workplace comedy from Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment and CBS TV Studios. How May We Hate You, an ensemble comedy based on the book of the same name by Anna Drezen and Todd Dakotah Briscoe, revolves around employees at a New York City hotel.

ELECTION NOTES

Telemundo wasn’t the only Spanish-language network working to get out the vote:
Univision Communications launched its “Vote for Your America” campaign in February. “We recognized more than a year ago the value of rolling out the Vote for Your America campaign to benefit the diverse communities we serve,” said Jessica Herrera-Flanigan, EVP of Government & Corporate Affairs. The company collaborated with partners Democracy Works/TurboVote, the NALEO Educational Fund, Mi Familia Vota, Hispanic Federation, National Council of La Raza and League of United Latin American Citizens, among others, to empower registered voters to get to the polls by providing the information and tools needed to make the process as easy as possible.

Azteca America was a media supporter for AIGA’s “Get Out the Vote” campaign, and featured PSAs encouraging Latinos to vote. The network also partnered with the Congressional Hispanic Leadership Institute as media sponsor for three voter forums, and expanded its partnership with Voto Latino.

Estrella TV was another AIGA partner, as well as with Edward James Olmos, NALEO Educational Fund and Mi Familia Vota, to promote voter education and participation. The “Yo Soy El Voto” (I Am the Vote) was created to help the Latino community better understand the candidates and the issues driving the election, while Estrella’s public affairs show, En La Lucha, featured key figures like Bernie Sanders.

Super-PACS had spent $46.2 million in November to elect Donald Trump, reported Mother Jones on November 7, versus $27.7 million for Hillary Clinton in the last days of the bruising campaign. Most were negative ads, with $23.2 million of Trump’s spots attacking Clinton and $35 million of Clinton’s ads hitting Trump.

With his Late Show preempted for CBS’s election night coverage, Stephen Colbert moved to Showtime for a live election night special last night that will be rebroadcast on CBS on Friday. Late Show also was live Monday and will be live again tonight. Comedy Central’s The Daily Show with Trevor Noah also aired live, followed by the net’s first live airing of @midnight with Chris Hardwick. Hosts had their share of fun with the culmination of a crazy election season. Some late night election zingers (the ones we can print):

– “Oh my god, woman! You fail one test and decide to go become a politician’s wife in Arkansas? Most women only do that when they fail a pregnancy test.” Full Frontal With Samantha Bee’s Bee, on Hillary Clinton moving to Arkansas to be with Bill Clinton after she failed the D.C. bar exam.

– “If ever there was a reason to vote, it’s because on the other side the KKK sees an opportunity to come back into the mainstream…. There’s no K in complacent.” Daily Show’s Trevor Noah, urging viewers to vote.

Let the games begin: The election is finally over. So who would last longest on Survivor, Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump? Let us know in the new Cynopsis poll: http://www.cynopsis.com/poll/.
