IN THE NEWS
It might not have been huge, but it was big: Donald Trump’s controversial appearance as host of NBC’s Saturday Night Live averaged a 6.6 rating in metered market households, the highest since January 2012. A 2.7 among A18-49 was the best since February, 2014.
The Daily Show’s Trevor Noah was back in the Comedy Central host seat just one day after undergoing emergency appendectomy surgery. “I’m back from the world’s shortest vacation,” said Noah on Friday.
“There is a huge void in leadership among [tech] companies in terms of the implications of what they are creating,” Jim Steyer, founder/CEO of Common Sense Media, said at the unveiling in Washington, DC, of the organization’s new report on tween and teen media use. “The tech industry has made tens of billions of dollars off this market yet there’s almost a complete lack of thought as to the implications.” Consider this: Teenagers (ages 13-18) in the U.S. average 9 hours per day of entertainment media use though some usage can occur simultaneously while tweens (8-12) use an average of 6 hours of entertainment media daily, according to the Common Sense Census: Media Use By Teens study, which surveyed 2,600 children ages 8-18. Among other highlights from the report:
Watching television and listening to music still dominate entertainment consumption of teens and tweens; only 10 percent of teens choose social media as their favorite media activity; nearly two-thirds of teens who multitask say they don’t think watching TV (63 percent), texting (64 percent) or using social media (55 percent) while doing homework makes any difference in their work quality. Gender differences continue to be pronounced, with just 5 percent of girls saying they play videogames every day vs. 23 percent of boys. And teens from lower-income families spend an average of 2.45 hours more with media per day than those from higher-income families.
Which presidential candidate would you like to see host Saturday Night Live next? Let us know in the new Cynopsis poll: http://cynopsis.com/poll/.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
ABC Family wasn’t kidding around when it said it was growing its programming slate. The net picked up two new scripted dramas, one-hour soapy drama Guilt and Beyond, about a young man who awakes from a coma with supernatural powers, to series. “These two shows are an exciting part of our evolution into Freeform,” coming in January, said Karey Burke, EVP, programming and development.
Video game biggie Activision Blizzard announced the launch of its own TV and movie studio, Activision Blizzard Studios. “We’re not in the film and television business, we’re in the franchise, intellectual property business,” said co-president Nick van Dyk at an Investor Day conference. First up: animated series Skylanders Academy, based on a popular game franchise.
Shane Brennan (NCIS: Los Angeles) sold two drama projects. Freeman, about an Oakland parole officer with a checkered past, went to CBS, while the CW grabbed Bob the Valkyrie, about a male Valkyrie forced to get in touch with his feminine side. Freeman will be written and exec produced by Dustin Lee Abraham (CSI), and Matt Greenberg (Ring of Fire) will man those jobs for Bob.
Jill Blotevogal and Jaime Paglia are leaving their posts as showrunners for MTV freshman Scream. Blotevogal will serve as a consultant, while Paglia is out the door.

COMING UP
Hollywood Medium, featuring an LA clairvoyant who shares messages from beyond with celebs, debuts Sunday, January 24 at 10p on E!. Star clients include Monica Potter, Bella Thorne, Jaime Pressly and Boy George, among others.
TV One docu-series The Next 15 promises to reveal what happens behind the scenes on reality TV. Currently filming in LA for a 1Q16 premiere, the show features reality show vets determined to change their public personas. “The veil has finally been lifted giving viewers exclusive access into the production process of a docu-series,” said producer Carlos King (The Real Housewives of Atlanta).
On Saturday, November 14, Azteca America is turning the network over to the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, for an evening dedicated to raising awareness for the work member hospitals are doing to help medically stricken kids and their families. A live fundraising event will air from 5p-11p, featuring appearances from supporters like Marie Osmond, telenovela stars and singer Ana Barbara, among others.
Starz launched Flesh and Bone on Saturday, November 8 at 8p. Coming up on episode two: An evening encounter with the American Ballet Company’s Chairman is more than ballerina Claire bargains for. Episodes of the dark drama created by Moira Walley-Beckett (Breaking Bad) are also available to subscribers on Starz Play and Starz on Demand in conjunction with their linear premiere.
It’s always fun reading synopses (almost spelled that wrong!) of cartoon plots. Here’s one for Cartoon Network special Regular Show: The Movie. “After accidentally creating a ‘Timenado,’ slacker groundskeepers Mordecai and Rigby go back in time and battle an evil volleyball coach in order to save the universe.” Movie premieres Wednesday, November 25 at 7p.
Netflix’s F Is for Family premieres Friday, December 18. Co-creator Bill Burr announced the news via Twitter, including a teaser for a show set in the 1970s, “when you could smack your kid, smoke inside and bring a gun to the airport.”
Early birds only: TV One’s News One Now this morning is devoting its entire broadcast (7a-8a) to presidential candidate Hillary Clinton’s Town Hall Meeting in South Carolina, which took place Saturday. The meeting, hosted by the South Carolina Legislative Black Caucus, was moderated by News One Now’s Roland S. Martin.
In the fight against ad blocking, publishers suffer more than anyone especially smaller ones. But they can also fight back. Sandy Pelland, Founder and CEO of MomLifeTV, will join Cynopsis for the November 17 webinar, Beating the Ad Blockers. “Many people download ad blockers because of advertisers’ actions," Pelland says. “Repetition and poor design are two examples of common and avoidable pain points. However, publishers also need to take responsibility for placing invasive ad tools on their sites.”Register for the webinar here.
WHAT’S UP, DOCS?
Logo is premiering documentary Gen Silent, about a group of six LGBT elders living in Boston, tonight at 9p. The movie is making noise – Logo, sites and blogs will share posts using #GenSilent to raise awareness of issues facing LGBT seniors. “After surviving the HIV/AIDS crisis, fighting for civil rights and truly earning the right to age gracefully, our LGBT elders now have to face new obstacles at a time when they are the most vulnerable,” Taj Paxton, exec producer of Logo Documentary Films, tells Cynopsis. “Logo is proud to stand with this often overlooked generation and to join Director Stu Maddux in giving them a voice.”
A making-of documentary focused on Bruce Springsteen’s 1980 masterpiece (we don’t pretend to be objective) The River will premiere on HBO Friday, November 27. The film from Thom Zimny, who also directed HBO docs about the Boss’s High Hopes and Darkness on the Edge of Town, will include interviews with the rock icon. Springsteen is an exec producer with manger Jon Landau and Barbara Carr.
All 12 living directors of the CIA will be interviewed in two-hour doc The Spymasters – CIA in the Crosshairs premiering Saturday, November 28 at 9p on Showtime. Mandy Patinkin (Homeland) narrates.
Kim Delaney (Army Wives) will introduce Searching for Home: Coming Back From War, airing Veterans Day, November 11 at 9p on KCET and Link TV. From exec producer Anthony Edwards (ER), Searching explores the harrowing effects of post-traumatic stress disorder on military families.
To OTT or not to OTT – and if so, how – is an increasingly common question. David Fannon, EVP of Screen Media Ventures, offers one strategy for success in the new Cynsiders: http://cynopsis.com/cyncity/ott-not-ott-thats-not-really-question/
RETURNING SERIES
Season two of ABC’s American Crime is slated to return on a new night, Wednesday, January 6 at 10p, during Nashville’s winter break. Last time out the limited series aired Thursdays, filling How to Get Away With Murder’s slot after the Shondaland show’s run.
Full Throttle Saloon, set in “the world’s largest biker bar,” will be open for business again Tuesday, December 1 at 10p on Destination America. Series previously aired on truTV and Reelz. The new episodes reveal the South Dakota drinking hole’s future after a devastating electrical fire in September.
Diva alert: The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills returns for season six Tuesday, December 1 at 9p. Bravo promises “jaw-dropping bling, wild fun, shocking drama and a few surprises.” Plus a new, blonde bombshell wife married to a high-powered attorney 32 years her senior.
IFC’s Maron, a fictionalized version of the life of writer/comedian Marc Maron, will be back for a fourth season. Production of 13 eps starts in January for a spring 2016 launch. “I got the character of me into a bit of trouble last season. I hope I can get him back on track,” said Maron. “The real me is doing fine.”
Syfy’s Z Nation has been renewed for season three, slated for a 2016 premiere. The zombie drama from The Asylum, currently averaging 1.5 million total viewers in Live+7, is the net’s most social original series in total social engagements.
ASPiRE reality series Changemakers, spotlighting African-American celebs giving back to others, is back with two new episodes. Rapper/producer Antwan “Big Boi” Patton and Atlanta Real Housewife Kandi show how they’re doing good on Wednesday, November 11 at 8p and 8:30p.
CASTING
Actor/singer Steve Kazee (Legends) is joining ABC’s Nashville in a recurring role. Country music drama airs Wednesdays at 10p.
Peter Fonda will guest on HBO pilot Max, a comedy set in 1963 directed and exec produced by Girls’ Lena Dunham.
Marcia Cross (Desperate Housewives) will recur on ABC’s Quantico, reports Deadline. Freshman drama airs Sundays at 10p.
Molly Parker (House of Cards) landed a role in Amazon Studios drama Trial, from David E. Kelley. Legal drama stars Billy Bob Thornton.
ADVERTISING & BRANDS
NBCUniversal is going all out to promote The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2, an effort that should please both Lionsgate and the franchise’s rabid fans. On November 10, the film’s stars, Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth and Josh Hutcherson appear on NBC’s The Voice to announce a behind-the-scenes 13-minute, commercial-free special to air on NBCU nets including Bravo, E!, Oxygen, Syfy and USA. “The NBCUniversal team has been very creative in working with us on this unique way to reach our fans,” said Lara Kazandjian, EVP of media for theatrical marketing at Lionsgate. Film debuts November 20.
DISTRIBUTION
Lionsgate announced the acquisition of distribution rights for Nature Born Pranksters, starring YouTube’s VitalyzdTV, Roman Atwood and Dennis Roady, collectors of over 25 million subscribers. The film, produced by Collective Digital Studio, will be released in theaters, electronic sell-through and VOD in early 2016.
