CYNOPSIS
11.08.16

Good morning. It’s Tuesday November 8, 2016, and this is your first early morning briefing.

IN THE NEWS

Local TV stations are among the 50 news outlets teaming with Facebook for its live #50states Election Day coverage. Tegna is the biggest partner in the initiative, with 6 of its stations onboard: KUSA Denver, KING Seattle, KARE Minneapolis, KTVB Boise, WCSH in Portland, Maine and Columbia, South Carolina’s WLTX. Each news organization is tasked with posting a 15-minute about the presidential election in that state, as well as live videos offering real-time data; the videos appear on Facebook’s “Election 2016” page. “On Election Day, our goal is to reach the maximum audience with our local reporting and inform our audience to make an educated voting decision,” said Frank Mungeam, Tegna’s VP of digital content. “Partnering with Facebook gives us the chance to expand the reach of our local journalism.”

CBS announced additional Election Day coverage plans. CBS Evening News expanded to an hour last night and will stretch again Wednesday night, November 9, from 6:30-7:30p, while CBS This Morning adds an hour of coverage Wednesday, from 7a-10a. Streaming service CBSN is offering continuous coverage today starting at 6a; network coverage starts at 7a with CBS This Morning.

Fox News’ new midtown Manhattan studio made its debut on Sunday, and will offer new tech tools including a “video chandelier” to show live remotes and a circular LED floor and a touch-enabled screen to break down election results tonight. It’s part of a $20 million+ renovation of a 3,675-square-foot space once partly occupied by a FedEx Kinkos store.

A+E Networks has relaunched History en Espanol with a new look, a new programming strategy and more than twice the number of premiere hours. Nightly vertical themes include auto (Mondays), historical treasures (Tuesdays), mysteries (Wednesdays), “Wild History” (Thursdays), “The Hidden Truth,” featuring Last Days of the Nazis and Hunting Hitler on Fridays, Saturday’s “Mega Specials + Drama,” and Pawn Stars on Sundays. “We’re injecting HEE’s primetimeschedule with new genres of programming to serve an even wider segment of the growing Hispanic audience throughout the U.S.as we continue to grow our channel,” said Edward Sabin, Managing Director, Americas and Head of Communications, International.

Multicultural Millennials gobble media at very high rates, according to a new report from Buzz Marketing Group, with 89 percent watching TV daily and 81 percent turning to television for daily news. For 55 percent of the group, TV is their most trusted source of information. And they’re not fickle  95 percent consider themselves loyal to brands they like.

TV Land ordered American Woman to series. The 1970s period dramedy, inspired the life of Kyle Richards (The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills), stars Alicia Silverstone (Clueless) as a single mother struggling to raise two daughters. John Wells Productions will produce in association with Warner Horizon Television.

Summer series America’s Got Talent celebrates the season with a special, America’s Got Talent Holiday Spectacular, featuring Andra Day, Pentatonix and Penn & Teller as well as performances from past season favorites and participation from judges Mel B, Heidi Klum, Simon Cowell and Howie Mandel. Nick Cannon hosts the two-hour event on Monday, December 19 at 8p on NBC.

Fox is also using network talent to get in the spirit of the season. Taraji’s White Hot Holidays airs Thursday, December 9 at 8p, with Empire star Taraji P. Henson joined by co-star Jussie Smollett, as well as Taye Diggs, Pharell Williams, Missy Elliot, Alicia Keys and more. Last year, Henson co-hosted a “White Hot” special with Empire co-star Terrence Howard that drew 5.1 million viewers.

getTV is featuring classic Christmas programming in primetime every night between Sunday, November 27 and Sunday, December 24, with a round-the-clock marathon from December 18-25. American Heroes Channel is teaming with AARP for a collaboration that kicks off Friday, November 11 at 10p. The Battle I’ll Never Forget, produced for AHC by AARP Studios, shares first-hand accounts of critical conflicts in American history.

E! will be live (of course!) with multiplatform red carpet coverage for the 2016 American Music Awards on Sunday, November 20 at 6p, prior to the awards telecast on ABC. Jason Kennedy and Tinashe will host. Designs get dissected the next day on E!’s Fashion Police at 8p.

Exactly 30 years after its original release, HNET Movies is airing 1986 high school basketball drama Hoosiers, on Monday, November 14 at 9p. Gene Hackman stars in the true story.

Discovery en Espanol will present Caza de Brujas en San Antonio, the Spanish version of Southwest of Salem: The Story of the San Antonio Four, on Sunday, November 13 at 9p. CNBC’s The Profit is headed to Cuba. In a special episode on Tuesday, November 15 at 10p, entrepreneur Marcus Lemonis will profile pioneering capitalists. “The Cuban people have an amazing spirit,” said Lemonis. “Seeing how small business functions in a communist country gave me an understanding of what’s really happening in Cuba.”

ADVERTISING

The presidential candidates released two-minute ads that were set to air last night, election eve. Hillary Clinton’s spot, shared yesterday, talked about “the kind of country we want for our children and grandchildren.” Donald Trump’s “Argument for America,” which had been racking up YouTube views since November 4, talked about stopping the “political establishment.”

NBCUniversal is taking over ad sales for the Apple News app, pre-installed in the tech giant’s operating system. James Kreckler will oversee a new sales group focused on working with advertisers and publishers to develop campaigns for the app which, according to Apple, has over 70 million active users. The exclusive deal starts in January.

Third quarter advertising revenue for Scripps Networks Interactive was $477.5 million, up 6.6 percent. The rise for the lifestyle nets during a hot election news period was “even higher than companies benefiting from cable news networks,” noted Bernstein Research.

GE is rolling out its second podcast series next week, reports AdWeek, after last year’s “The Message” had 4.4 million downloads and averaged 450,000 per episode. Brand messaging within the story, about a widower trying to reconnect with his wife that references a piece of GE software called “digital twin,” will be subtle. “We never did a hard sell on a product or a service within it – it’s woven into the story naturally where the idea of the digital twin comes to life in the story,” Andy Goldberg, GE’s global chief creative officer, told AdWeek.

That’s the beauty of podcasting – listeners’ connection with the story extends to the brand, whether it’s tequila or a TV show. To learn more about a powerful tool that programmerss and marketers are newly embracing, register for the November 29 Cynopsis webinar , How to Use Podcasting to Amplify Your Brand.

CASTING

Will Chase will return to Nashville as a guest on the country music drama’s season 5 premiere on CMT in 2017.

Dallas Roberts (The Good Wife) will recur as the husband of Felicity Huffman’s character on season 3 of ABC anthology series American Crime.

Ted Danson (The Good Place) and Mary Steenburgen (Last Man on Earth) will return as guest stars on season 9 of HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm. The married couple play themselves. Also back are series regulars Larry David, Cheryl Hines and Susie Essman.

Paul Reiser (Mad About You), Sean Astin (Rudy) and Danish actress Linnea Berthelsen (Teenland) have joined the season 2 cast of Netflix’s Stranger Things, about to start production.

Jonathan Howard (Guilt) landed a recurring role on season 4 of  TNT’s The Last Ship.

DIGITAL DATA

During the aforementioned earnings call, Scripps Networks Interactive said it won’t be renewing its Netflix distribution deal when it expires at year’s end. Making its shows available for streaming does not provide the kind of dual revenue model that best monetized their content, explained COO Burton Jablin.

GOING GLOBAL

Hat Trick International presold the fifth and final season of Episodes to Africa (BBC Worldwide), Asia (Fox), Australia (ABC and Stan), Benelux (Fox), CEE (HBO), Israel (Yes DBS), New Zealand (Sky), Norway (SBS Discovery), Portugal (Fox) and Spain (Canal+). A format deal for unscripted Whose Line is it Anyway? was struck for Foxtel in Australia.

Mexico’s Canal 22 licensed Wild Kratts and Finding Stuff Out, while TNU Uruguay picked up Peg + Cat and Wild Kratts, and Chile’s CNTV grabbed Peg + Cat. Multi-territory SomosTV acquired Meteor and the Mighty Monster Trucks and Monkey See Monkey Do.
