CBS launched digital streaming news net CBSN on Thursday, available 24/7 with live, anchored coverage 15 hours each weekday. DVR-like functionality allows viewers to watch previous segments and jump back to live programming, and content can be shared via social media accounts with compatible devices. Which means Millennials might start watching the same news content as Mom and Dad. “We’re confident this service will appeal to both traditional news consumers and a whole new set of viewers,” said CBS CEO Les Moonves. Inaugural sponsors on the net, ad-supported across all platforms, include Microsoft and Amazon.

IN THE NEWS

NBC freshman comedy Marry Me received a pickup for five additional episodes, for a total of 18. The net’s other two new comedies, Bad Judge and A to Z, were canceled last week. Marry Me drew a middling 1.5 rating among A18-49 on Wednesday, but is the top new series in upscale viewers.

ABC fairytale musical Galavant, keeping the bench warm Sundays during Once Upon a Time’s hiatus, launches January 4 with back-to-back eps at 8p. Agent Carter takes over during Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s break on Tuesday, January 6. Thursday Shonda Rhimes block Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal and How to Get Away with Murder take a holiday break starting November 20 and return January 29; The Taste fills in from 8p-10p.

In the wake of a court injunction October 23, Internet TV service Aereo started notifying staff of cuts on Thursday. “In an effort to reduce costs, we made the difficult decision to lay off some of our staff in Boston and New York,” said company spokesperson Virginia Lam. “We are continuing to conserve resources while we chart our path forward.”

CBS content will be included in Sony’s upcoming broadband service, revealed CBS CEO Les Moonves during an earning call. “Sony along with others who are getting into this space represent yet another iteration of content distribution,” said Moonves. “And as new entrants they will pay us higher subscription fees than we’ve ever been paid before.” Another Moonves nugget: Showtime will offer an OTT product “sometime in 2015.”

Testing Portable People Meters to measure out-of-home viewing, Nielsen found a 7-9 percent lift in ratings. The three-month trial conducted in the Chicago market measured viewers A25-54, and saw the greatest lift in daytime. Sports programming showed the biggest genre gain, up 14 percent.

The guests for the final weeks of CBS’s The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson include frequent visitors Tim Meadows (SNL), who’s made a record 41 appearances with Ferguson, Reno 911!’s Thomas Lennon, who’ll make his 31st trip, and Betty White (Hot in Cleveland), returning for her 24th. For the grand finale, December 19, Ferguson welcomes Jay Leno, who knows all too well what it’s like to end a lengthy late-night run. James Corden joins The Late Late Show as host on March 9.

Pay-TV subscriber growth declined a mere .1 percent in 3Q14 versus the period last year, according to a new report from MoffettNathanson Research, with cable losses slowing while the growth of satellite and telco “hit the wall.” Cable operators dipped 2.4 percent, losing 469,000 subscribers; satellite TV providers saw a .1 percent uptick, with 40,000 more subs, while telco-based services slowed to 11.2 percent growth in the quarter with 330,000 more customers, versus an 18.2 percent gain two years ago.

Comedian Artie Lange’s offensive series of tweets on Tuesday fantasizing about ESPN anchor Cari Champion earned the ire of the sports net – “No one should be subjected to such hateful language,” said ESPN in a statement – and cost him an appearance on Comedy Central’s @midnight. “I would rather load trucks for a living than ever apologize to one of these awful PC groups ruining the country,” tweeted Lange in response to the outcry. “But if it upset the lady in question that’s another story.” As for the canceled gig, “Comedy Central has always been good to me and I don’t blame them,” said Lange.

SmackDown, the WWE series averaging 3.1 million viewers on Fridays and beating all primetime viewing on cable on the night, is sliding to Thursdays starting January 15. Why the move? “Quite simply, more young men watch television on Thursday nights than on Fridays,” said Michael Engelman, EVP, marketing, digital and global brand strategy. “Since the majority of broadcast programming skews female, we’re also using Thursday nights to counterprogram.” SmackDown aired on Thursdays during its first seven years, on the former UPN.

Two days after its Saturday finale, the entire season of the Starz filmmaking experiment The Chair will be available for purchase on digital platforms. Why so soon? “The Chair is a one-of-a-kind series that required us to think a bit differently,” said Mara Winokur, SVP, Starz digital media. “Seeing how the series was embraced by critics and fans only reinforced our desire to bring The Chair to a digital audience as quickly as possible.” One of the films documented in the series, Not Cool, reached number five on the iTunes movie charts the week it was released.

Music Choice premiered three non-stop holiday music channels this week: MC Sounds of the Seasons, MC Soft Rock and Romances Music Channels. It’s the first time all three have flipped formats so early. “Viewership on our channels spikes during the holiday season with our average audience increasing by 11 percent,” explained VP of programming Damon Williams.

Discovery Communications hosted its fifth annual “Creating Change” event on Thursday at its headquarters in Silver Spring, MD and San Francisco office. In a 12-hour marathon, employees completed projects for over 20 nonprofit organizations for causes including veteran’s affairs and poverty, minority, youth and STEM education and animal welfare.

An online search for the new Mr. Moviefone led to Kevin Thompson, host of BET’s Claim to Fame game show. As the face of the listing and information service, Thompson’s duties will include red carpet appearances, interviews, live appearances and social media takeovers.
