11.07.14

Good morning. It’s Friday, November 7, 2014, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS

Yesterday, CBS’s President and CEO Les Moonves hinted at a streaming service for its Showtime properties, similar to the future HBO a la carte offering. Moonves told Deadline that the service would not have “the costs associated with cable news networks,” and “provide programming 24/7 to whole new audiences…we are following our viewers with CBS content where they are.” CBS debuted the All-Access web platform for the network last month, which goes for $5.99 a month…

…also as expected, CBS News unveiled the new CBSN ad-supported streaming news service yesterday. “There’s a tremendous opportunity on these platforms for a true round-the-clock newscast…that will appeal to both traditional news consumers and a whole new set of viewers,” Moonves said. Inaugural sponsors on the net, ad-supported across all platforms, include Microsoft and Amazon. Details include:

– Live, anchored coverage from 9a-midnight ET every weekday.

– Simulcasts of CBS News special reports for breaking news.

– Additional content from CBS sources CNET, CBSSports.com, Entertainment Tonight and more.

– Access to the network through CBSNews.com, connected devices like Amazon Fire TV, Roku platforms and CBS News apps.

– DVR-like function to allow viewers to watch segments they want to or tune into live programming.

– The show will include anchors Jeff Glor, Elaine Quijano, Michelle Miller, Don Dahler and Vladimir Duthiers.

PBS Digital Studios partnered with creators John and Hank Green to expand YouTube’s Crash Course educational series. Under the deal, PBS will help develop two new CC series focusing on the U.S. government and astronomy. The channel’s current library of videos will be distributed by PBS Digital Studios YT network, and made available to educators through PBS LearningMedia. The series will launch in January 2015.

Former Machinima executives with 3BlackDot, an influencer entertainment company, launched the multi-channel network JetPak on YouTube. The MCN will cater to top YT channels and influencers, with a roster including Adam Montoya (SeaNanners, 4.9 million subscribers), Tom Cassell (TheSyndicateProject, 8.2 million subscribers) and Scott Robison (TheMrSark, 614K subscribers) so far. “We’re treating channels as partners rather than commodities and are offering influencers the ability to dictate the term and exclusivity of their participation,” 3BlackDot Co-Founder Adam Montoya said.

AOL reported strong revenue growth in its Q3 earnings-call yesterday, increasing 12 percent to $626.8 million and above analyst prediction of $623.5 million. The big winner for AOL was its advertising revenue, jumping 18 percent to $473.4 million due to its third-party platform sales.

CONTENT MEDIA

HGTV.com’s revamp went live yesterday and includes the options for sponsors to establish an ongoing presence with Sponsor Profile Pages, which aggregate a brand’s photography and content in a single location. The HGTV Photo Library offers users design inspiration with room photos from HGTV experts and other interior designers and architects.

Jerry Seinfeld’s fifth season of Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee hit Crackle platforms yesterday. The latest season will include an all-star lineup of guests, including Jimmy Fallon, Kevin Hart, Amy Schumer and Fred Armisen. The bonus feature Dick Corcoran, starring former Seinfeld co-star Michael Richards, kicks off the first episode.

Mun2’s rebrand to NBC Universo: a good move? Vote in our poll.

Two days after its Saturday finale, the entire season of the Starz filmmaking experiment The Chair will be available for purchase on digital platforms. Why so soon? “The Chair is a one-of-a-kind series that required us to think a bit differently,” said Mara Winokur, SVP, Starz digital media. “Seeing how the series was embraced by critics and fans only reinforced our desire to bring The Chair to a digital audience as quickly as possible.” One of the films documented in the series, Not Cool, reached number five on the iTunes movie charts the week it was released.

DISTRIBUTION

In the wake of a court injunction October 23, Internet TV service Aereo started notifying staff of cuts on Thursday. “In an effort to reduce costs, we made the difficult decision to lay off some of our staff in Boston and New York,” said company spokesperson Virginia Lam. “We are continuing to conserve resources while we chart our path forward.”

Dentsu Aegis Network – the company behind brands Carat, Dentsu and others – acquired mobile agency Fetch Media Limited yesterday. “With consumers increasingly engaging with brands through mobile devices…growing our digital profile across all capabilities is one of our…strategic priorities and this deal clearly recognizes the potential we see in both Fetch and the wider mobile market,” Dentsu Chief Executive Officer of Northern Europe Robert Horler said. Fetch’s name and management team will remain the same.

Taco Bell and the College Football Playoff will be giving away 3000 tickets to create a special “Live Mas Student Section” for the final four schools in the inaugural playoff, with Taco Bell and ESPN grabbing 10 more seats per school for super fans. Students vie for the most dedicated fan spots by following @ESPNFB on Twitter and Instagram and posting photos showing (a lot of) school spirit. The campaign, from ESPN in-house agency CreativeWorks, includes spots starring college football studio host Rece Davis.

RESEARCH

Digital ad spend will soar past TV spending by 2019, reaching $103 billion, according to the latest report from Forrester Research. Digital will see a 12 percent annual compound growth rate by 2019, with mobile claiming 66 percent of the growth in the next five years. Forrester predicts TV ad spend will climb to just $85.8 billion in comparison. Last year, the IAB found that internet ad revenues beat out broadcast TV revenues for the first time, reporting $42.8 billion compared to TV’s $40.1 billion.

With the holiday season just around the corner, social media analytics firm Unruly released the Top 5 Most Shared Christmas Ads of All Time, and the results include:

Pay-TV subscriber growth declined a mere .1 percent in 3Q14 versus the period last year, according to a new report from MoffettNathanson Research, with cable losses slowing while the growth of satellite and telco “hit the wall.” Cable operators dipped 2.4 percent, losing 469,000 subscribers; satellite TV providers saw a .1 percent uptick, with 40,000 more subs, while telco-based services slowed to 11.2 percent growth in the quarter with 330,000 more customers, versus an 18.2 percent gain two years ago.

Testing Portable People Meters to measure out-of-home viewing, Nielsen found a 7-9 percent lift in ratings. The three-month trial conducted in the Chicago market measured viewers A25-54, and saw the greatest lift in daytime. Sports programming showed the biggest genre gain, up 14 percent.
