It’s official, finally: Kevin Reilly has been named president of TNT and TBS, and chief creative officer for Turner Entertainment. The former chairman of entertainment for Fox takes on responsibilities handled by two departed execs: Turner Entertainment Networks president Steve Koonin, who left in April, and former president of TNT, TBS and TCM, Michael Wright, who exited in August. “Kevin brings a tremendous track record of success not only in terms of programming hits but also in the new media arena, where he was among the first broadcast network executives to push for meaningful investment in digital and social media,” said Turner Broadcasting president David Levy, to whom Reilly will report. “He has never shied away from taking bold programming risks and being a true champion of quality television.”

IN THE NEWS

Evan Shapiro is leaving his position as president of Pivot. An early, enthusiastic advocate for and interpreter of Millennials as socially active, engaged and optimistic, Shapiro, who teaches at NYU to help gain insight into the generation, was already sounding the call in HuffPo back in 2012: “By writing off all Millennials as over-protected, underachieving, self-entitled group-thinkers, you … alienate and discount the very people you most need,” he commented. Currently in serious talks with more than one company, say sources, Shapiro is expected to remain in the Millennial space – and to announce his next move in the not-too-distant future. “To y’all: stay tuned!” he tweeted….

…Kent Rees, part of the team that established the Pivot brand, has been promoted from EVP, marketing, scheduling and operations to general manager, reporting to Participant Media CEO Jim Berk. “I want to continue the network’s momentum in demonstrating that what you watch does make a difference,” said Rees.

CBS confirmed season seven of The Mentalist will be its last. The procedural launches its 13-ep final season Sunday, November 30 at 9:30p ET/9p PT (football doubleheader day). The drama moves to Wednesdays at 8p when The Good Wife returns, and has its two-hour series finale February 18.

CBS also announced Undercover Boss will resurface Sunday, December 14 at 8p, moving to Fridays on January 2. There’s method to the schedule madness: bridging the fall finales and spring returns of Survivor and Amazing Race. “One of the goals this season was to keep expanding our lineup of year-round, original programming and have fewer repeat cycles,” said Kelly Kahl, senior EVP, CBS Primetime.

Paul Buccieri has been appointed president, A&E and History, effective early next year, overseeing all content creation, programming, brand development and marketing for the nets. “As the media landscape continues to evolve, Paul will be looking at the future of our powerful brands with a macro vision,” said Nancy Dubuc, president and CEO, A+E Networks, to whom Buccieri will report. Buccieri had been Chairman, ITV Studios U.S. Group & ITV Studios Global Entertainment.

NCBUniversal’s Hispanic cable net mun2 will relaunch as NBC Universo, complete with peacock logo, announced NBCU. The rebrand takes place Sunday, February 1, the day of its exclusive Spanish-language telecast of the Super Bowl. “mun2’s transformation into a high-demand cable network is one of our top company priorities,” said Joe Uva, chairman, Hispanic enterprises and content, NBCUniversal. “Our commitment to the U.S. Hispanic market is stronger than ever and the relaunch…is a direct reflection of that pledge.”

Social media “reminds” people to watch an episode after the live airing, according to a new report from Nielsen. The more social the show, the greater the boost in time-shifted viewing, with the audience for “high social” shows 36 percent higher in Live+7, versus a 16 percent boost for “low social” shows.

An interactive clock, games and “magical online passageway” to the North Pole are part of Hallmark Channel’s enhanced multi-platform digital strategy to support its 2014 “Countdown to Christmas” event, “ultimately creating a 360-degree environment in which our audience can experience Countdown to Christmas across platforms – from on-air, to online, to social,” said Bill Abbott, president and CEO, Crown Media Family Networks. Also in the net’s bag of goodies: a “Joy to the World” sweepstakes, offering viewers a chance to win a 16-day around the world trip for two.

Opening keynote for NATPE 2015 is 92-year-old TV icon Norman Lear. “It is nearly impossible to describe Norman’s impact in terms of both creative television hits and catalyzing the national narrative about otherwise untouchable subjects,” said NATPE CEO Rod Perth. “His ability to combine humor and make all of us reexamine our own values, was without equal. He is very simply an American treasure.” Market is held January 20-22 in Miami.

Cameron Diaz (The Other Woman) will host NBC’s Saturday Night Live for the fourth time, on November 22. Musical guests are producer Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars, who collaborated on “Uptown Funk,” set for a November 10 release. Diaz stars in Annie, in theaters December 19.

Warner Bros. joins Time Warner’s HBO and Turner Broadcasting in a round of belt-tightening that started Tuesday, with layoffs aimed at reducing the studio’s annual budget by $200 million. In an email to staff, chairman and CEO Kevin Tsujihara said most cuts would happen this week.

In an earnings call Tuesday, Discovery Communications CEO David Zaslav dismissed the potential threat of online video services from CBS and HBO. “Through all the innovation and press releases, we believe there is one constant: It is a great time to be in the content business,” said Zaslav. “Despite shifting behaviors and new digital offerings, more and more viewers are gravitating to high-quality content. And we still believe there are many years of sustainable organic growth from the continuing global rollout of pay television.” That said, “We can do a better job in our flagships of growing our audience,” Zaslav acknowledged. “Over the last year it’s been relatively flat. With the right creative leadership we can really drive that.”

ADVERTISING AND BRANDS

TV spending by automakers will increase 9.8 percent on cable in 2015, to $1.7 billion, but drop 9.7 percent on broadcast, to $2.3 billion, according to new data from Borrell. Car dealer spending is expected to dip in both. “It’s a landmark year for digital advertising,” said the report. “For the first time, more than half of all automotive dollars will be spent on digital media. While it’s clearly come at the expense of radio and newspaper budgets, the next phase of erosion will likely affect TV the most.” Online spending is predicted to jump 33.7 percent, to $7.4 billion in 2015.
