IN THE NEWS

In a surprise move, Charlie Corwin is exiting as co-chairman and CEO of Endemol Shine North America, leaving co-chairman and CEO Cris Abrego to fly solo. Both men had signed new deals in January. “I’ve been very fortunate to have worked alongside some of the most talented, creative people in our industry at Endemol Shine over these last three years,” Corwin said. “And I know that I’m leaving our teams here in North America and across Latin America in great hands with Cris Abrego, who is a leader in every sense of the word.” Said Abrego, “Clearly we are all going to miss Charlie, who has been a great partner since we first joined the company together.” Corwin, who leaves later this month, will continue to serve as executive producer on several Endemol Shine Studios projects.

The U.S. Justice Department filed a lawsuit on Wednesday against AT&T, accusing DirecTV of being “the ringleader of a series of unlawful information exchanges” to influence Cox Communications, Charter and AT&T to avoid carrying SportsNet LA. The alleged effort was intended to gain leverage in negotiations with Time Warner Cable, which wanted the pay TV companies to carry the Dodgers-owned channel. The carriage issues occurred before AT&T’s acquisition of DirecTV, responded AT&T, and “the reason why no other major TV provider chose to carry this content was that no one wanted to force all of their customers to pay the inflated prices that Time Warner Cable was demanding for a channel devoted solely to L.A. Dodgers baseball. We make our carriage decisions independently, legally and only after thorough negotiations with the content owner.” AT&T just announced an $85.4 billion deal to acquire Time Warner. The suit was obtained by the LA Times.

Speaking of Time Warner the company exceeded 3Q16 earnings expectations, thanks in part to an ad sales increase at CNN amid election coverage, and Turner networks beating forecasts, with adjusted operating income of $1.2 billion, up 12.3 percent. “We had a strong third quarter, which keeps us on track toexceed our original 2016 outlook and underscores our leadership in creating and distributing the very best content,” said CEO Jeff Bewkes. As for whether the company’s creativity will suffer with the proposed merger with AT&T, “Most of creative input comes from outside the company, in partnership with us,” said Bewkes during a 3Q16 conference call, adding, “Creative partners outside the company…know that if they come here, we not only have a culture to make the best out of your project, but we have the resources and distribution ability. And now, with AT&T, an enhanced ability to innovate.”

Bewkes also said Turner’s TBS and TNT will be the cable home DC Comics movies, adding to the previously announced Star Wars films windfall. The lineup “aligns perfectly with the younger audiences these brands are drawing,” noted Bewkes.

Several members of the executive committee of the Broadcast Television Journalists Association have resigned, protesting a brand partnership with Entertainment Weekly for the next Critics’ Choice Awards, airing on A&E on December 11. “EW will have the same role as A&E in determining the Critics’ Choice Awards that we vote on  NONE,” read a memo from the governing body. “EW is a promotional partner, like others we have had before. This is not the ‘EW Awards’ and it never will be. They, like all promotional media partners, are helping to build awareness of and tune-in for our CCA.”

Faced with a red-hot World Series on Fox, CBS and NBC replaced original episodes scheduled for last night with reruns. CBS swapped out an original Criminal Minds, while NBC replaced new episodes of Blindspot, Law & Order: SVU and Chicago P.D.

On the eve of the season 9 premiere of Bravo’s The Real Housewives of Atlanta, exec producer Steven Weinstock notes Housewives franchise settings help determine their tone. “Each cast reflects the sensibilities of their community,” says Weinstock. In Atlanta, “You’ve got a big metropolis that’s very diverse, a budding music scene, and the vibe is a bit sassier, more brazen.” Series returns Sunday, November 6 at 8p. For more from Weinstock, including whether the series is really unscripted, check out the latest Cynsiders.

DIGITAL DATA

Alternate viewing platforms are on the rise, but TV still commands 89 percent of total video time, according to the Video Advertising Bureau’s “State of Digital Video” report, and 8 out of 10 viewing minutes are spent with live TV programming. The study also notes 12 million fewer P2+ are doing less video viewing on their computers. Smartphone video reach, on the other hand, was at its highest level, with 156 million P18+ users in 2Q16, up from 132 million the year before.

Netflix renewed Longmire for a sixth and final season, launching in the U.S., Canada, Australia and New Zealand in 2016. The Western was picked up by Netflix after three seasons on A&E.

It’s live! Turner service FilmStruck features a streaming library targeting movie lovers. Jennifer Dorian, GM of TMC and FilmStruck, explains the U.S. jump into SVOD here.

Food Network had the number 2 ranking in social views in the food category for October, gobbling over 745 million video views for the month. On Sunday, October 30, Food claimed the most social video views, besting longtime leader Tastemade, according to Tubular Labs.

People.com is launching a 12-part video series featuring “original thinkers, innovators, craftspeople, risk-takers and artisans” across the U.S. Sponsored by Advil, American Doers premieres Tuesday, November 1 at 10a.

Bravo continued its expansion into the digital space with the launch yesterday of short-form digital video series Bravo After Hours, hosted by Carrie Keagan (Big Morning Buzz with Carrie Keagan) covering “Bravolebrities.” Launching later this year will be The Last Thing, featuring guests talking about the last thing they texted, ate, listened to, etc.; video postcards Bravo’s Midday Getaway, and Vandersnap Rules, a Snapchat-ized Vanderpump Rules.

Also continuing a march into digital, E!News announced freeSTYLE, the brand’s first Facebook Live series, streaming as an eight episode weekly series with beauty tips and tricks. With launch partner Ulta Beauty, “freeSTYLE” kicks off Thursday, November 3 at 8p on E!’s Facebook page.

ADVERTISING

The Donald Trump campaign announced Wednesday that it was running three ads during last night’s World Series Game 7 on Fox. “We are excited to take our message directly to the millions of sports fans watching,” said the campaign. The Clinton camp also booked three last-minute ads. While the market price for a 30-second spot had topped $500,000 for the ratings scorer, broadcasters are required to give candidate the lowest unit rate leading up to an election.

While political advertising didn’t reach expected levels in 3Q16, it was enough to contribute in part to increased revenues for Sinclair Broadcast Group (up 27.5 percent to $635 million), TEGNAa (up 23.4 percent to $502 million) and Graham (up 25 percent to $112.4 million). Retrans lifts also factored into the upswings.

According to the IAB’s Internet Advertising Report, Internet advertising revenues in the U.S. rose 19.1 percent in the first half of 2016 versus the same period last year, to $32.7 billion. Social advertising totaled $7 billion, up from $4.4 billion in the first six months of 2015. “These half-year revenues are a testament to the role of digital screens – especially mobile screens – in consumers’ increasingly connected lives,” said Randall Rothenberg, president and CEO, IAB. “Marketers and brands clearly recognize the innate power of digital to offer immersive experiences and secure real-time engagement.”

TEGNA launched a business focused on OTT advertising, offering local and regional advertisers access to premium long-form episodic content. The pitch: Premion aggregates ad inventory from over 80 OTT inventory sources, offering advertisers a one-stop-shop transaction that reaches cord-cutters and audiences spending more time watching OTT content. With most OTT providers, ads will run either 15 or 30 second, in fast-forward disabled, pre-roll and mid-roll pods.
