ADVERTISING

On Friday, Donald Trump pitched in $10 million more of his own money for his presidential campaign. The Republican candidate had promised to spend $100 million on the bid; counting the latest addition, he’s kicked in about $66 million.

Broadcast network spending dipped 13.2 percent in September versus year-ago, according to Standard Media Index, while cable spending was flat. The average cost for a 30-second spot across ABC, CBS, FOX and NBC, excluding sports, was $86,000, down from $93,300 in 2015.

The FCC passed privacy rules last week that prohibit broadband providers like Comcast, Time Warner and Verizon from using information about subscribers’ online behavior and app usage for ad targeting. “It is the consumer’s information. It is not the information of the network the consumer hires to deliver that information,” said FCC chairman Tom Wheeler. The Direct Marketing Association begged to differ, stating, “The FCC’s decision is bad for consumers and bad for the U.S. economy. FCC’s action ignores what’s working and working well, and supplants it with a burdensome system that will stifle innovation and make it harder to deliver messages that are relevant to the consumer.”

Podcasting has been around for years, but suddenly it’s a very big deal as way for advertisers and programmers to connect with ad-adverse consumers. “Podcasting has become valuable to marketers because it allows us to reach a unique audience in a unique voice,” Collin Willardson of Mack Weldon tells Cynopsis. “I don’t have a sports voice, but with a sports podcast, I can now talk to a sports audience with a sports voice and POV.” Hear more from Willardson, as well as panelists from Midroll Media and Edison Research, at the November 29 webinar, How to Use Podcasting to Amplify Your Brand. You’ll find details here.

A+E Networks and Hearst Magazines Digital Media are partnering for branded content videos produced by Hearst that will air on A&E, Lifetime, History, Viceland and FYI. “This partnership allows us to amplify an advertiser’s narrative beyond our own distribution network,” said Todd Haskell, SVP and chief revenue officer, HMDM. “These videos will bring the authority and credibility of our editorial brands, along with an organic advertiser integration, into a perfectly aligned block of A+E programming.” Hearst jointly owns A+E with Disney-ABC Television Group.

Programmatic is more than a buzzword, says Dan Raffe, director of programmatic operations at Centro. “It might be a relatively young technology, but programmatic addresses today’s marketing issues head-on,” adds Raffe, who offers tips on how to become a programmatic power user in the latest Cynsiders.
