CYNOPSISSPORTS
10.29.15

Good morning. It’s Thursday October 29, 2015, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

From power outages to game-tying homers to an extra innings marathon, FOX Sports’ coverage of Game 1 of the 2015 World Series made plenty of memories as the contest drew 14.9 million viewers, according to Nielsen Fast Nationals, and a 9.0/17 ratings/share. That marks the game the highest-rated World Series Game 1 since 2009 and the most-watched since 2010. The contest was also up 23% in rating and 22% in audience over Game 1 a year ago. On the digital front, the matchup became FOX Sports GO’s most-viewed MLB game and the second most-viewed event of all-time on an authenticated basis with more than 177,000 unique streamers.

ON THE AIR

Despite stiff competition from the World Series, the NBA season opened with its own uptick. Turner reports that TNT’s NBA Opening Night doubleheader saw a gross audience of six million total viewers, according to Nielsen Fast Nationals, swelling 28% over last year. The Cavaliers/Bulls telecast averaged 3.5 million total viewers and a 2.1 rating, for upticks of 52% and 40% over the comparable game last year, while the late game saw an average of 2.5 million total viewers and a 1.5 rating with viewership up 4% over the network’s comparable game last year. The pair of games also handed Turner’s TV Everywhere platforms with spikes, including a 202% increase in unique visits and gains of 145% in minutes consumed and 110% in video starts.

The Audi 2015 MLS Cup Playoffs continue tonight with another single-elimination Knockout Round Match, set to be carried by UniMas with English-language SAP. The broadcast slate will then see MLS’s American broadcasters ESPN, FS1 and Fox Deportes, along with UniMas, showcase the Conference semifinals and finals, before ESPN and UniMas close out the season with the MLS Cup Final on Dec. 6. The Semifinals kick off Nov. 1 at 3p with a pair of games on ESPN and ESPN Deportes, before heading to FS1 and FOX Deportes with two more matches later that day starting at 7p. Conference championships launch Nov. 22, with the MLS Cup on Dec. 6.

The Dallas Mavericks locked in a multi-year local TV rights extension with FOX Sports Southwest. The channel is slated to carry 81 team games this season with Mark Followill returning for his 15th season with the Mavericks and 11th season as television play-by-play announcer for all telecasts, beside Derek Harper. “FOX sports has been an amazing partner for the Mavs and our fans,” said Mavericks owner Mark Cuban. “We are excited to do a long term deal that will allow Mavs fans to stream our games as well as watch on television.”

The pair will both host the season premiere episode tonight before alternating the show each week beside SiriusXM’s Justin Termine.

Sport1 GmbH snagged platform-neutral, audiovisual broadcasting rights to the NBA for pay-TV channel SPORT1 US for the 2015/16 and 2016/17 seasons from London-based Perform Group as part of a sublicense agreement. Games will now be broadcast live for the next two years on SPORT1 US in Germany, Austria and Switzerland with up to 120 games showcased per season.

Speaking of the NBA, FOX Sports Southeast reports that the Atlanta Hawks’ 2015-16 season opener versus the Pistons on Tuesday scored a 100% surge in ratings for the channel compared to the first game of the team’s 2014-15 campaign. The network drew a 2.2 household score for Tuesday’s contest, doubling last year’s 1.1 HH rating for Atlanta’s season-opener at the Toronto Raptors.
