IN THE NEWS

CBS gave a full-season order to Life in Pieces, the fall season’s top new comedy with 10.26 million total viewers. On its last outing, October 19, the show earned a 2.1/6 rating among A18-49, its highest Live+SD number since the premiere. November 5, Pieces moves to its new regular time period on Thursdays at 8:30p.

NBC’s Shades of Blue, starring Jennifer Lopez and Ray Liotta, debuts Thursday, January 14 at 9p, with a two-hour premiere event directed by Oscar and four-time Emmy winner Barry Levinson (Rain Man). Crime drama moves to its regular 10p timeslot, following The Blacklist, the next week. Shades replaces The Player, which this week had its order snipped from 13 to 9 episodes.

After a messy breakup from NBC, Miss Universe has a new home at Fox. NBC cut ties with the pageant organization in June after its partner in the joint venture, Donald Trump, made derogatory remarks about Mexicans. Now Fox has cut a deal with the org’s new owner, WME/IMG, and will air the Miss Universe contest on Sunday, December 20; the network also secured rights for the 2016 Miss USA competition. “As the broadcast leader in innovative and groundbreaking live events, Fox is the perfect partner as we look to implement new and exciting changes to this show and the franchise,” said Michael Antinoro, IMG’s SVP of original content.

Fox pinned the blame for a power outage during Tuesday’s World Series Game 1 broadcast on “a rare electronics failure” at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City, home to the Royals. The resulting delay of game added about seven minutes to the match-up’s five hour-plus, 14 inning running time.

Longer shows + shorter commercial breaks – that’s the formula truTV is counting on for an “enhanced viewer experience,” starting in 4Q16. The net will extend the amount of programming time during each new hour of original prime content by 20 percent, giving it the lowest average commercial and promo time in all of television. “I’m excited for truTV to be a first mover in the industry to deliver a better experience for our viewers,” said Chris Linn, president and head of programming. “It’s the kind of bold and game-changing move that audiences have come to expect from truTV.” Since its brand refresh a year ago, the network has seen 55 percent growth with A18-34 and 44 percent among A18-49.

Actor/comedian/author Chris Hardwick will host and exec produce NBC’s The Wall. The primetime game show from LeBron James’ and Maverick Carter’s SpringHill Entertainment and Glassman Media features deserving two-person teams competing for a “life-changing” amount of cash. “I’m excited about this series because it’s different than anything on TV right now. It’s got everything – excitement, drama, and action – and it’s something the entire family can watch and root for together,” said James. No premiere date has been announced.

The Weather Channel is not part of the acquisition by IBM of digital assets from Weather Co. that was announced yesterday. TWC will continue to operate as a standalone business, said Dave Shull, CEO, The Weather Channel Network. “With our world class weather experts and thousands of localized versions of the network, we are uniquely positioned to provide the world’s best storm coverage as a hyper-local streaming service as well,” said Shull.“We are continuing to invest in our strategic partnerships with our distributors, advertisers, and emerging technology start-ups.” The Weather Channel will license weather forecast data from IBM under a long-term contract. TWC shareholders are Bain Capital, Blackstone and NBCUniversal.

Fancy that: So far this season, ABC is tops among the Big Four with upscale viewers (excluding sports). The net has five of the top ten shows among A18-49 with household incomes of $100,000 and $200,000, including all three Shonda Rimes dramas. Factor in football, and NBC leads in upscale audience, followed by Thursday Night Football-fueled CBS, ABC and Fox.

Better than an Emmy? Very excited Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon announced on the NBC late nighter that he’s getting his own theme park ride. “Race Through New York Starring Jimmy Fallon” is schedule to open at NBCUniversal’s Universal Orlando resort on 2017. “The best part of the whole thing?” said Fallon, “On the way out there’s a gift shop where you can buy a T-shirt for $200.”

The Brink, renewed by HBO this summer for a season two, will not be back after all. “After evaluating our schedule and our programming needs, we unfortunately decided we cannot give The Brink the attention it deserves,” said the premium cable net. The modestly-rated geopolitical satire starred Tim Robbins and Jack Black.

No tricks: Starz isn’t even waiting for the Halloween premiere of Ash vs Evil Dead to renew the series for a second season. Citing strong fan, affiliate and distributor demand, the premium net gave an early pickup for the Evil Dead follow-up. “The early fan and press support, along with the international broadcaster demand for more story have made it clear that the adventures of Ash Williams can’t end with season one,” said managing director Carmi Zlotnik. Starz has global licensing deals in over 100 countries and territories for the show.

ADVERTISING AND BRANDS
