CYNOPSISDIGITAL
10.27.16

Good morning. It’s Thursday October 27, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

TODAY’S CODEBREAKER

Skyscraper: A skyscraper is a digital ad unit with dimensions of 160×600 pixels.

TOP NEWS

At a recent event on the 102nd floor of One World Trade Center, National Geographic announced a new global rebrand across all of its media platforms and businesses. First off, Nat Geo unveiled its new tagline, “Further.” Nat Geo says that the tagline is designed to “capture the aspirations of the National Geographic audience.” Also of note: National Geographic’s TV network will drop the word “Channel” from its title. And Nat Geo will launch a new brand logo across all of its media platforms, including linear, print, and digital properties. The rebranding launch will coincide with the November 14 premiere of MARS, the network’s upcoming mini-series. (National Geographic’s magazine will also feature a November Mars issue.) “Why say National Geographic Channel when it’s all National Geographic? We’re pushing content from one platform to another,” Nat Geo’s Susan Goldberg told Cynopsis Digital. Goldberg holds the dual titles of Editor in Chief, National Geographic Magazine, and Editorial Director, National Geographic Partners. “We’re taking our content from the magazine, for example, and disaggregating it, and rebuilding it for all the different platforms where we are,” she said. “So we’ll take a magazine story and remake it one way for Facebook, and a different way for Snapchat, and a different way for nationalgeographic.com…It really feels like ‘National Geographic,’ without that platform definition, is the way to go.”

According to a new report from Bloomberg, Snapchat aims to raise as much as $4 billion in its 2017 IPO. Bloomberg’s sources say that the company’s valuation could range anywhere from $25 billion to $40 billion.

CYNOPSIS SNAPCHAT BOOT CAMP

There’s a lot of news about Snapchat these days. That’s because Snapchat boasts immense and growing usership, particularly among younger demos. So how can you make use of Snapchat as a media pro? Mindshare, Food Network, Innovid, McBeard, and Hearst’s Sweet will have the answers at today’s Cynopsis Snapchat Boot Camp. We only have THREE spots left, and the event starts at 8:30 AM today in NYC. Last chance to register here!

VIRTUAL + AUGMENTED REALITY

Mamma Mia – even Swedish pop groups are getting into VR. ABBA is teaming up with American Idol-creator Simon Fuller to integrate the group’s classic songs into virtual reality experiences. Universal Music Group will also be involved in the new venture, which will include non-VR digital projects as well. Not much else is known about the venture just yet; those involved say they’ll be out with more details next year. ABBA has sold 375 million albums over the years. They haven’t actually performed together in over three decades.

CLOUD SERVICES

IBM’s Cloud Services unit is unveiling some new tech. Its new services, which will be integrated with the IBM cognitive supercomputer Watson, are geared toward digital video. According to IBM, the new integrations will allow users to automatically segment videos into shorter clips based on “meaningful concepts”; provide instant frame-by-frame audience reactions to live-streamed content by analyzing social media channels; and improve search-and-discovery for viewers by “identifying new content based on related interests for targeted audience groups.” The new technologies are being piloted by IBM’s R&D unit.

BRANDED CONTENT

Celebs and public figures on Facebook can now share branded content with followers. The social media giant has some strict rules for such sharing, including a ban on overly aggressive marketing and the requirement that publishers tag their clients in any sponsored posts. Now expanding to individuals with Verified Profiles, the ability to post branded content was previously restricted to publishers’ Verified Pages. While Facebook doesn’t get a cut of the revenue from branded content deals, it does rake in some bucks when publishers or advertisers pay for extra promotion of their posts. Facebook, no doubt, expects plenty of branded posts to go for that promotional push.

PROGRAMMING

The Disney-owned digital media company Maker Studios will roll out a slate of fifteen original series this fall and winter. The shows will be available on Polaris, Maker’s gaming channel, as well as The Station, its comedy channel. Here’s where things get interesting: Maker will first debut the content on Sling TV, Dish Network’s internet-based TV service, as well as two other as-yet unnamed premium platforms. In the past, Maker has generally used YouTube as its first stop for monetization. It seems some diversification is in order.

RESEARCH

@NewsOfTheDead: THIS IS SO STRESSFUL #TheWalkingDead

– 7.6% of viewers who said they were watching something cool on TV were tuned into Fox, led by Game 1 of the World Series.

– 12.9% of viewers who said they were upset about what they were watching on TV were tuned into AMC, with most of that distress sparked by the particularly traumatic season 7 premiere of The Walking Dead.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

The upcoming video service from AwesomenessTV and Verizon has named a new exec. Russell Rothberg, most recently Executive VP of Drama Development for Universal Television, will be the service’s VP of Creative. He’ll report to Samie Kim Falvey, the co-venture’s Chief Content Officer. AwesomenessTV and Verizon still haven’t given the service a name, or said when it will debut. AwesomenessTV, a digital media company geared toward teens and tweens, is majority-owned by Comcast. Verizon owns a 24.5% stake.

Samsung has named Gilles BianRosa to a major product role. BianRosa, the founder and former CEO of Fan TV, will serve as Samsung’s SVP and Chief Product Officer for Visual Display Content & Services. He’ll be in charge of product for the electronics company’s connected device and smart TV offerings. BianRosa technically joins Samsung from TiVo, which has owned Fan TV since 2014.

Lotame, a cross-device data management platform, has named Laura Lewellyn as its new Senior Director of Market Innovation. She’ll help to extend the company’s product and service offerings. Lewellyn previously worked at Resonate, serving as Director of Research.

Hint: He’s interviewed two extremely prominent Democratic politicians on his show. Answer Zach Galifianakis. His uncle, Nick Galifianakis, served as a two-term congressman from North Carolina, losing reelection to future senator Jesse Helms in 1972.
