IN THE NEWS

National Geographic announced a global rebrand, including the tagline “Further” that crosses all the brand’s media platforms, including TV networks, the magazine and social and digital platforms. The word “channel” will be dropped from on-air and off-air extensions. “‘Further’ is more than just a tagline for us,” said Courteney Monroe, CEO, National Geographic Global Television Network, at an event at One World Trade Center. “It’s a philosophy, a mindset  one that has defined the National Geographic Brand for over 128 years. ‘Further’ is a call to arms, a rallying cry, an ever-shifting marker of progress. One of the things I love most about ‘Further’ is that … it conveys to viewers, readers, advertisers, and creators, that we embody a relentless pursuit to go deeper, to push boundaries, and to be pioneering in everything we do.” The rebrand coincides with global event series Mars, from executive producers Brian Grazer and Ron Howard, premiering Monday, November 14 at 9p.

Which digital basic networks are most important to potential cord cutters? Beta Research’s 2016 Basic Network Evaluation Study found that on percent rating important to enjoyment of cable, the top ranked digital basic networks were: NFL Network (45%), Investigation Discovery (44%), Discovery Life (43%), FX Movie Channel (43%), Disney XD (42%), BBC America (41%) and Discovery Family (41%). On percent of adults mentioning as a favorite digital basic channel, BBCA (19%), ID (17%), NFL Network (17%), Cooking Channel (16%), Nat Geo Wild (16%) and Hallmark Movies & Mysteries (15%) ranked the highest. And on average perceived value among viewers, the top ranked digital basic networks included Fusion ($2.78), NFL Network ($2.72), Tennis Channel ($2.57), INSP ($2.54), American Heroes ($2.38) and Viceland ($2.37). “As in other Beta studies, specific networks with lower viewing levels demonstrated high value among their smaller audience,” Andrew Klein, president, cable TV division, Beta Research, tells Cynopsis.

OTT services targeting cord-cutters aren’t a threat to cable, posited NBCUniversal CEO Steve Burke during an earnings call. “The real promise of OTT is incremental subscribers,” said Burke. “The fact is, most people find plenty of value in their cable and satellite subscription and aren’t going to change anytime soon.” Comcast reported 32,000 more pay-TV subscribers in 3Q16, versus a loss of 48,000 in 3Q15. Burke’s remarks followed AT&T’s announcement of a $35/month price point for its DirecTV Now service with over 100 channels.

PwC released its Q3 2016 Deal Insights Report today, and noted that after a strong start in the first half of the year, deal activity was down 23 percent from the quarter prior, the lowest volume point in the last 12 months. Advertising and marketing were the only sector with volume growth. “Verizon’s acquisition of Yahoo for $4.8B embodies a few key themes recurring throughout 2016,” said the report, “monetization of digital advertising, enhancing the customer experience and consolidation of assets in search of economies of scale.”

As Weather Channel continues its shift from scripted programming to focus on real live weather, the net announced the addition of on-camera meteorologist Liana Brackett. Brackett joints from KPTV Fox 12 Oregon.

Weinstein Television event series Waco has found a home in Spike TV. The six-parter, announced in August, is based on the true story of the 1993 FBI siege of a religious sect in Texas. Taylor Kitsch (Friday Night Lights) will play cult leader David Koresh, while Michael Shannon (Boardwalk Empire) portrays FBI negotiator Gary Noesner.

HBO grabbed U.S. and Canadian rights to BBC One limited series Cormoran Strike, based on the J.K. Rowling novels about a war veteran-turned-private detective. Filming starts this fall.

DIGITAL DATA

While digital devices as a whole beat TV when it comes to viewing streaming content, TV remains the top individual device for consumers, according to research company RealityMine. Televisions account for 7.4 hours per week of streaming viewing, versus 5.0 hour for computers, 3.1 hours for mobile devices and 3.0 hours for tablets. Netflix and YouTube have the highest daily reach of streaming content, with 18 percent and 14 percent, respectively.

Viewers who access VOD through pay-TV providers watch a 30-minute show for 24 minutes, versus 18 minutes for those watching time-shifted programs and 16 minutes for those watching live, per the Video Advertising Bureau.

ADVERTISING

Broadcast TV ad spend dipped 13.2 percent in September versus September 2015, according to Standard Meda Index, abetted by $100 million in reduced spending from fantasy football companies DraftKings and FanDuel. “While some of September’s falls can be attributed to a post Olympics hangover, evidence shows the biggest contributor to broadcast’s significant fall was driven by the fantasy leagues spend almost completely drying up under the numerous legal actions they face,” said SMI CEO James Fennessy. Cable, on other hand, reaped the benefits of election-fueled ratings. “Cable’s gains are directly related to the terrific results delivered by the news networks, which we fully expect to continue through the November election cycle,” said Fennessy.

GLOBAL GOINGS ON

Britain’s Royal Television Society has issued a call for entries for the RTS Programme Awards 2017 in Partnership with Audio Network. Among the changes this year is the introduction of the RTS Channel of the Year Award, recognizing outstanding performance by a single UK channel on any platform.

Video personalization company IRIS.TV is licensing its cloud-based video programming system, allowing publishers and marketers to stream custom programming to individual users, to TV Tokyo.
