Jim Parsons (Big Bang Theory) will voice Buddy in an NBC stop-motion animated special Elf: Buddy’s Musical Christmas, based on the 2003 movie with Will Ferrell. Ed Asner, who played Santa on the big screen, will narrate the show, airing Tuesday, December 16 at 8p.

IN THE NEWS

In addition to a super-sized episode of Once Upon a Time on Sunday, November 16, ABC is showing the love for Wednesday comedies Modern Family, The Goldbergs, The Middle and Black-ish with orders for two extra eps each. Hospital drama Grey’s Anatomy will also produce 24 episodes this season, while Castle adds one more, for at total of 23.

On the flip side, ABC canceled low-rated Manhattan Love Story. The Tuesday comedy was averaging a 1.0 rating among A18-49 and 3.3 million viewers. In its place, the net will run back-to-back Selfies.

Amid reports that Here Comes Honey Boo Boo mama June Shannon had resumed a relationship with a registered sex offender, TLC canceled the reality show. “Supporting the health and welfare of these remarkable children is our only priority,” said TLC. Shannon posted a video on Facebook denying the allegation that she’s been seeing Mark McDaniel, who spent a decade behind bars for aggravated child molestation; Shannon’s now-20-year-old daughter, Anna, has gone public with the claim the McDaniel molested her when she was 8. Season four of the series wrapped up in August.

Winds of change: a memo to the Weather Channel team from SVP, programming Norah Zimmett on Friday announced organizational changes that included the exit of senior exec producer of the morning line-up, Scott Warren. “These changes are designed to streamline our organization and make us more effective in how we put weather and storytelling at the center of every aspect of live programming,” said Zimmett. Warren was replaced by Angie Massie (CNN’s Rick’s List).

The 10th Annual New York Television Festival closed Saturday with a record 32 development deals for independent TV creators, including direct-to-series green lights from The Orchard and Travel Channel/ULIVE and the development of an unscripted pilot presentation with A&E. Also announced were the winner of the History Unscripted Development Pipeline; five finalists in the Lifetime Unscripted Development Pipeline; winner of the Lionsgate/Sea to Sky  Channel 4 Drama Co-Development Award;and additional development deals from NYTVF partners Channel 4, Comedy Central, Conde Nast Entertainment, Tiny Riot! (a FremantleMedia company), FYI, H2, Investigation Discovery, National Geographic Channels, Red Arrow Entertainment, SundanceTV, truTV, and WE tv.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

AMC Networks and BBC Worldwide announced a creative partnership calling for AMC Networks to invest $200 million to acquire a 49.9 percent equity stake in BBC America. AMC will have operational control of BBCA, including affiliate and advertising sales, to run consistent with BBC’s editorial standards. “The U.S. is an important market for the BBC’s commercial activities,” said Tony Hall, BBC director-general and chairman of BBC Worldwide. “This partnership brings together the whole BBC and will help us reach new audiences in the U.S., strengthen BBC America’s position for the long term and create opportunities for the UK creative community.”

ABC has put in development a workplace comedy with actress Elizabeth Banks (30 Rock) set as exec producer and director. Written by Caroline Williams (Miss Guided), The Greater Good comes from 20th Century Fox Television and Brownstone Productions.

ABC is also developing a comedy with Chris Paul, inspired by the LA Clippers star’s experiences growing up, reports Variety. The project from CBS Television Studios follows Cleveland Cavalier LeBron James’ comedy Survivor’s Remorse, renewed for season two by Starz.

Ahoy, Gilligan! TBS gave a pilot order to comedy Wrecked, from writers Justin Shipley & Jordan Shipley and producer Jesse Hara, about survivors of a plane crash on a remote island.

COMING UP

Ariana Grande, Maroon 5, Tim McGraw and Pharrell Williams will perform on one-hour CBS special A Very Grammy Christmas, broadcast Friday, December 5 at 9p. Nominations for Album of the Year for the 57th Annual Grammy Awards will be announced during the show, a warm-up for music’s big trophyfest on Sunday, February 8 at 8p.

Another music note: One Direction, Coldplay, Ed Sheeran, Calvin Harris, Clean Bandit and Paloma Faith are set to perform at the first BBC Music Awards, airing live from London on the BBC Thursday, December 11.

Reelz is airing The American Veteran Center Honors Awards Show on Sunday, November 15 at 5p. Stars including Gary Sinese (CSI: NY), Mark Valley (Fringe) and Pat Sajak (Wheel of Fortune) will be on hand to share stories of military heroes.

CBS is feeling social. Performers from all 21 of the net’s primetime shows are participating in #CBSInstagramTakever, today through Sunday, November 2, by sharing photos and videos from their sets. It’s CBS’s eighth week-long social media event, and the first time a broadcast net has launched a week-long Instagram takeover.

Between Hallmark’s “Countdown to Christmas” and Hallmark Movies & Mysteries’ “Most Wonderful Movies of Christmas,” the sister nets will air 14 new original movies (12 on HC and 2 on HMM) and 2,600 hours of holiday programming. Launch date: Halloween, October 31.

The Film Independent Spirit Awards air live for the first time Saturday, February 21 at 2p on IFC. “We wanted to shake things up to mark the 30th anniversary,” said Film Independent president Josh Welsh. “By broadcasting live from the beach we’ll do just that.”

CASTING

Paul Giamatti (Cinderella Man) and Damian Lewis (Homeland) have been cast as leads in Showtime pilot Billions. Written by Brian Koppelman and David Levien (Ocean’s Thirteen) and Andrew Ross Sorkin (CNBC’s Squawk Box), drama is set in the world of high finance.

Charles Dance (Game of Thrones) landed a lead role in Syfy’s Childhood’s End, reports EW. The six-hour miniseries premieres in 2015.

Lindsy Fonseca (Nikita) will play an aspiring actress in upcoming ABC action series Agent Carter, launching in January.

Lauren Graham, currently in the sixth and final season of NBC’s Parenthood, will guest star on upcoming CBS reboot The Odd Couple as the ex-wife of Matthew Perry’s Oscar Madison.

RATINGS

Two weeks into the 2014-2015 season, NBC held the top spot in Big Four C3 ratings, with an average 2.97 among A18-49, down 7 percent from the period last year. Thursday Night Football-fueled CBS gained 16 percent, to 2.58, while ABC dipped  7 percent, to a 2.07 average. Pre-World Series Fox tumbled 33 percent, to 1.47. Among total viewers in C3 it was CBS (3.76, up 9 percent), NBC (3.28, down 1 percent), ABC (2.58, down one percent) and Fox (1.31, down 34 percent).

NatGeo’s Wicked Tuna: North vs. South wrapped season one with the largest-ever gains from DVR playback in network history.The Sunday, October 19 finale saw a 0.73 P25-54 Live+3 rating, a gain of 58 percent over Live+SD.

Wednesday’s Cutthroat Kitchen Superstar Sabotage on Food Network ranked number three in cable for its 9p timeslot, with a .7 rating among A25-54.

TNT’s Transporter: The Series delivered 1.3 million total viewers at 9p on October 8, followed by another ep that drew 1.2 million.

Thursday A18-49 Analysis: CBS scored the most A18-49 viewers Thursday with 6.6/21, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen, dominating every hour with NFL football. CBS scored 5.7/20 to win 8p, followed by 2.5/8 for ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy. The game delivered 6.9/21 at 9p, versus 3.0/9 for ABC’s Scandal, and continued to lead at 10p with 7.1/22, versus 3.0/9 for ABC’s How to Get Away with Murder.

IN MEMORIAM

Former Fox News and CNN anchor Terry Keenan died suddenly on October 23 of a massive brain hemorrhage. She was 54. Most recently, Keenan had been working as a business columnist at the New York Post.
