IN THE NEWS
CBS gave a full season order for freshman drama Limitless. “We’re excited how Limitless continues to evolve creatively each week and stand out with its unique style of storytelling,” said Glenn Geller, president, CBS Entertainment. The season’s number two new series is delivering 11.43 million viewers and a 2.4/8 ratings among A18-49 on Tuesdays. The net also ordered six backup scripts for medical drama Code Black, airing Wednesdays at 10p.
ABC cut its 13-episode order for new drama Blood & Oil to 10. Opposite Sunday Night Football and The Walking Dead, the show fell from a 1.4 A18-49 for its premiere to .9 in Live+SD numbers.
Also doing some snipping is NBC, which slashed its order for The Player from 13 episodes to nine. The Thursday drama posted a .8 Live+SD A18-49 rating last week, after a launch that drew 1.2.
Vice is expanding to about 12 European markets, CEO Shane Smith told The Hollywood Reporter. That’s in addition to a network in the U.S., which he says will be announced “shortly.” (It wasn’t clear whether Smith was referring to a pact with A+E Networks that includes the launch of a linear channel in 2016.) As for deal structure, “We are not only making radically different content, but also doing radically different monetization plans such as show sponsorships,” said Smith. “We want to, at least partly, reconstruct how TV is monetized.”
TBS canceled freshman comedy Clipped, set in a Boston barbershop. During Upfronts, net president Kevin Reilly promised “a huge slate of originals,” and indeed there’s more on deck, including family comedy The Detour from The Daily Show alums Samantha Bee and Jason Jones.
Undateable, which went live on both coasts for its season three premiere but was tape delayed in most of the country for episode two, is back to two live telecasts. NBC plans to stick with the double telecasts for the remainder of the Friday night comedy’s 13-episode order.
Cartoon Network has partnered with Comcast and the X1 Voice Remote to launch a voice recognition function for Cartoon series Teen Titans Go!. Kids can say commands like “Teen Titans Go!”, “Boy Wonder!”, and “Hello Cyborg,” and queue characters on the Teen Titans Go! X1 Homepage, and hear responses unique to each character. Voice commands will be active until Tuesday, December 22.
TV networks had a strong showing in Shareablee’s Social Scorecard of the Top 25 U.S. brands in 3Q15. Based on total actions on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, MTV hit number six, the top network on the list, followed by Fox News (number eight), ESPN (number fourteen) and Telemundo (number 16).
Is Charter Communications going skinny? According to DSLReports, Charter sent a letter to customers in the Midwest offering a bundle with local broadcast channels, Showtime or HBO and no long-term contract for $12.99/month. Tack on $7 and ESPN, Discovery, FX, ABC Family, AMC and TBS are part of the package.
Comedy Central’s South Park is making its U.S. Spanish-language debut, tonight at 10p on NBC Universo. The network “is going where no other Spanish cable network has gone before,” said Arelys Carballo, VP of programming. “South Park is a daring series that introduces an irreverent brand of comedy to our Hispanic viewers and adds an exciting twist to our lineup.”
The 11th Annual New York Television Festival wrapped after over 400 meetings connecting independent creators with decision-makers and artists recognized by development partners A&E, AMC, Channel 4, Comedy Central, FYI, History, H2, Lifetime, Starz, truTV, WE tv and Red Arrow Entertainment Group‘s Left/Right and Fabrik Entertainment. Color NYTVF founder and executive director Terence Gray happy. “We saw a real uptick across the board in the quality of submissions this year, resulting in strong engagement by industry decision-makers, and a record number of meetings taking place throughout the week,” said Gray.

COMING UP
Spanish-language movie network Cinelatino is offering its annual “Semana de Terror” (Week of Terror), Monday, October 26 through Saturday, October 31. Event includes premieres of two films based on true stories: Secretos (Secrets) and Exorcismo Documentado (Documented Exorcism) on Tuesday, October 27, and Friday, October 30, respectively, at 11p.
Speaking of exorcism, Destination America is hosting the first live, televised eviction of demons in the U.S. on Friday, October 30 at 9p, in aptly-named Exorcism: Live!. What’s the deal? “Before The Exorcist movie, Linda Blair and pea soup, there was a 1949 Washington Post article that reported a 13-year old boy’s exorcism as, ‘the most remarkable experience of its kind in religious history,’”the special’s creator and producer Jodi Tovay tells Cynopsis. “On the 66th anniversary we are telling the real-life story and broadcasting live from ‘The Exorcist House’ in St. Louis. This is the most ambitious project Destination America has ever done, essentially building a movie set in a small suburban neighborhood. Our production team (also known facetiously as Satan’s Little Helpers) are tightening the rundown and drinking our electrolyte-infused holy water.” And if something… unexpected happens? “We have our inimitable paranormal team at the ready: the Tennessee Wraith Chasers, psychic medium Chip Coffey and Bishop James Long,” assures Tovay.“Live, unedited, and authentically real, this is going to be the most dangerous night in television…and we’re going to scare the pea soup right out of you.”
Distract yourself from a Halloween hangover with AMC’s The Walking Dead Mega Sunday event Sunday, November 1 at 9p. During a 90-minute episode of the hit zombie drama, AMC will premiere the trailer for its upcoming series Preacher, based on the comic book franchise, as well as the television premiere of the trailer for martial arts drama Into the Badlands. Nat Geo and GE have teamed for Breakthrough, a science anthology series premiering November 1 with episodes directed by A-listers like Ron Howard and Angela Bassett. Who dreamed up this unique collaboration, and how does GE fit in? Nat Geo CEO Courteney Monroe has the details in the new Cynsiders, out today: http://cynopsis.com/cyncity/nat-geo-launches-breakthrough-hollywoods-elite-personal/
The season two premiere of TNT’s Legends is available now across TNT platforms, and subscribers will be able to access the second episode of the season on demand on November 3, the day after the linear season two launch. The new season has been “completely re-imagnined,” according to the net, with new supporting cast (but Sean Bean’s still there), new locations and a new approach to storytelling.
ABC Family (soon to be Freeform) announced winter premiere dates. Season three of The Fosters picks up Monday, January 18 at 8p, followed by new series Recovery Road at 9p. Season three of Young & Hungry debuts Wednesday, February 3 at 8p, leading into Baby Daddy at 8:30p.
The Victorian era-set Sherlock special has a name: Sherlock: The Abominable Bride. The 90-minute show will premiere on PBS’s Masterpiece Mystery and BBC One on January 1.
CASTING
Kurtwood Smith (That 70s Show) landed a role in ABC’s Marvel’s Agent Carter. Season two launches in 2016.
Phil McGraw (Dr. Phil) will guest on the November 3 episode of Fox’s Grandfathered. Comedy starring John Stamos airs Tuesdays at 8p.
TV host Mario Lopez (Extra) won’t have to stretch too much to play TV dance show host Vince Fontaine on Fox’s Grease: Live. Event airs Sunday, January 31.
With more and more people, especially millennials, distrustful of ads, what’s a programmer to do? Social media is one effective way to get a message across. “Influencer marketing allows brands to connect with audience more organically and establish a level of trust that is not possible through traditional advertising,” says Matt Bruen, head of partnerships at FameBit, a service that connects brands with YouTubers. For solutions from Bruen and other experts in the field, register for the Cynopsis webinar three days away, How to Leverage Influencers on Social Media. Info is here.
ADVERTISING & BRANDS
Keep your money, the N.C.A.A. told DraftKings and FanDuel. The fantasy sports leagues have been banned from all sponsorship and advertising during the 2016 March Madness games, airing on CBS and Turner, because “your games meet the definition of sports wagering within our bylaws,” said the college sports org.
GLOBAL GOINGS-ON
Amazon nabbed exclusive streaming rights to AMC martial arts drama Into the Badlands for UK Prime Video. Eps will be available on a weekly basis starting November 16, after their U.S. premiere.
The hills are alive in the UK, too. Or at least they will be this holiday season, when ITV presents musical drama The Sound of Music Live!. Based on the original stage musical, the special (no relation to the NBC’s 2013 smash) will star Kara Tointon (Mr Selfridge) as Maria.
SYNDICATION
Millennials like their Modern Family served cold. For the month of September, syndicated programming averaged a .4 rating among A18-34 viewers, flat with last year, according to Nielsen Live+ SD data. Meanwhile for the same period, broadcast ratings for the demo dipped 15 percent, to 1.1.
Watch out for a mini Friends reunion on Celebrity Name Game Thursday, October 29, when Courteney Cox and Lisa Kudrow both play. Cox is an exec producer on the game show.
Timeless International, Inc. announced renewal rights for distribution of the National Cherry Blossom Festival. Sinclair-owned WJLA in DC will air the event live on Saturday, April 16; the syndicated one-hour spring special will begin airing nationally the following Saturday.

And September was the most watched month in our history. If Bounce were a cable network, it would be in the top 10 for African-Americans, delivering more black adults in prime than TBS, TNT, FX, AMC and about 100 other cable networks.”

Project Runway hit a season 14 high 2.5 million total viewers and 1.1 million A25-54 on Thursday, making it the number one non-sports cable telecast of the night in the demo for the third consecutive week.
