Standard Ad Units: The IAB (Interactive Advertising Bureau) defines a standard ad unit as a set of ad specifications for standard image or animated in-page ad units that establishes a framework for advertising inventory and webpage design.

TOP NEWS

Maker Studios is hopping across the pond. Disney, which owns the multi-channel network, has inked a deal with the U.K. telecoms company TalkTalk. Under the deal, TalkTalk will feature some of Maker’s short-form video content on its pay-TV service. Some of the digital creators who will be featured on TalkTalk’s service will include How Ridiculous, Noodlerella, Shameless Maya, Camila Coelho, and Daym Drops.

Over the last few years, Netflix has spent a lot of money very quickly, particularly on content. That’s why the company’s long-term debt sits at over $2.3 billion. And it looks like that number will top $3 billion sometime soon. Netflix says that it plans to raise an additional $800 million in debt, using the funding on “general corporate purposes.” A huge chunk of that money will go toward original content. Next year alone, Netflix says that it intends to spend $6 billion. The company also says that, in the long run, it wants half of its movies and shows to be original productions.

ADVERTISING

GfK MRI, a market research unit owned by the German institute GfK, has reached a deal with CubeYou, a customer insights software company that studies American consumers through the lens of social media data. Under the new partnership, CubeYou will complement GfK MRI’s research with social data across Facebook and Twitter. The goal is to let advertisers and agencies look more closely at the relationship between a brand’s social media presence and the way consumers actually use its products. “Brands can understand clearly where they stand with consumers in the social world, and learn how to enrich those connections through special offers, events or even mass media advertising,” said GfK MRI exec Andrew Arthur in a statement.

The Viacom R&D unit Viacom Labs is rolling out a new TV format. According to Viacom, the format can pull fans’ online live-streams into on-air TV broadcasts during a regularly scheduled TV show. The live-streams will be visible as “curated real time feed[s],” according to Viacom. MTV Australia will be the first Viacom property to produce and launch an original series using the format. The show, untitled at the moment, is slated to launch on MTV Music, MTV Australia’s linear music channel, in 2017. Viacom says that the format was first tested successfully in a June broadcast, when MTV Music Australia invited fans to live-stream themselves dancing to music videos. According to Viacom, the broadcast drew an audience more than double its average viewership.

DEALS + COMPANY ACQUISITIONS

The New York Times is spending $30 million to buy The Wirecutter, an online consumer guide that offers recommendations for tech gadgets. (The Wirecutter also owns Sweethome, a similarly-formatted consumer guide for home appliances.) The Wirecutter was founded in 2011 by Brian Lam, formerly an editor at Gawker Media’s Gizmodo.

VIRTUAL + AUGMENTED REALITY

Can’t afford a VR headset? The virtual reality production company Jaunt VR is bringing VR experiences to desktop computers. Jaunt is rolling out Compass, a patent-pending technology that auto-pilots a user’s VR experience, automatically shifting to pre-determined “points of interest.” (You can also manually shift perspective, though that’s a capability that’s already available for online 360-degree videos.) Jaunt has already rolled out four new series that make use of Compass, available on the company’s website.
