IN THE NEWS

CNBC announced the names of the candidates who made the cut for the two-hour Republican candidate debate on Wednesday, October 28 at 8p. In: Donald Trump, Ben Carson, Marco Rubio, Jeb Bush, Carly Fiorina, Ted Cruz, Mike Huckabee, Chris Christi, John Kasich and Rand Paul. Not ready for primetime, apparently, are Rick Santorum, Bobby Jindal, George Pataki and Lindsey Graham, who spar at 6p. Overseeing matters will be CNBC hosts Carl Quintanilla and Becky Quick and chief Washington correspondent John Harwood.

TiVo Research is giving it away. “Congratulations to Rentrak and comScore on their recent merger,” said TiVo in the big announcement. “To celebrate we’ve decided to give our ratings data away for free starting in Q1 of 2016.” TiVo is promising “anonymized individual household-level viewing data from more than two million homes, directly matched to online exposure and purchase data.”

Nielsen CEO Mitch Barns also had something to say about the Rentrak/comScore merger. “We love our competitive position,” said Barns during an investor call on Wednesday. “The market needs total audience measurement. That’s the loud and clear call from the marketplace, so that’s exactly what we’ve been focused on.” As for the rollout of Nielsen’s Digital Content Ratings, Barns said, the initial release “has gone smoothly and we’re pleased with the feedback we’ve received.”

Which digital basic networks might make cable subscribers think twice about cutting the cord? According to a new 2015 Beta Research study, among subscribers who said they were “extremely” or “very interested” in dropping cable TV, 48 percent rated FX Movie Channel as “important to the enjoyment of cable,” followed by 45 percent for BBC America, BBC World News, Discovery Family Channel and Disney XD, and 44 percent for Cooking Channel and ID. When it came to viewer favorites, “As in other Beta Studies, top ranked networks on average viewer value included sports networks (e.g SEC Network and NFL Network),networks with smaller niche audiences (e.g. Fusion, AXS TV, American Heroes Channel) and children’s/family networks (e.g Sprout, Disney XD, INSP),” Andrew Klein, president, cable TV division, tells Cynopsis.

Bob Beckel, fired by Fox News in June, will resurface on CNN as a political commentator. The liberal pundit, who was let go over “personal issues,” has appeared several times on CNN since his ouster.

It’s official: Chris Rock will host the 88th Academy Awards. The Saturday Night Live vet, who most recently directed the comedy special Amy Schumer: Live at the Apollo, also hosted the 2005 telecast. Ceremony airs Sunday, February 28 on ABC.

ESPN will lay off about 300 staffers this week, or 4 percent of its workforce, said network president John Skipper. In a memo, Skipper characterized the cuts as part of a plan to “reimagine our future, to embrace change and make the right choices for our business,” noting ongoing initiatives include integrating emerging technology in the business, enhancing marketing efforts with new tech tools and integrating distribution efforts.

HBO CEO Richard Pepler called Comcast, Charter and AT&T to task for not supporting subscription streaming service HBO Now. At a WSJD event on Tuesday, Pepler asked, “Why wouldn’t you want to take a product like HBO…and make it a part of your package and share the revenue with us?” Addressing concerns that HBO Now would cannibalize the pay-TV business, Pepler pointed out that less than 1 percent of HBO Now’s customers came from pay-TV.

Fusion and The Root, the news site for African-American influencers, are partnering to develop programming for the cable net. “We see this as a tremendous opportunity for Fusion to provide The Root, a brand known for creating gripping digital content, with a platform to reach a new audience on TV,” said Fusion CEO Isaac Lee. “Bringing their editorial voice to our viewers underscores the importance of serving audiences with content that reflects the interests and passions of a young, multicultural generation.” The Root reaches an average 5 million unique users per month.

Hallmark Channel will be the first media partner for animal welfare organization Best Friends Animal Society, part of a campaign to stop the killing of cats and dogs in shelters and inspire people to adopt. The partnership is part of Hallmark Channel’s Pet Project, a cross-platform advocacy initiative that will include on-air elements, PSAs, print ads and grassroots efforts.

Social media platforms will grab 5 percent of TV marketing budgets in 2016, according to a report from The Diffusion Group, and that number will keep increasing until 2020. Facebook is expected to be the big kahuna, attracting the most network dollars to promote programming.

Fox Television Group Chairmen and CEOs Gary Newman and Dana Walden will receive the National Champion for Children Award at the 24th annual dinner for The Alliance for Children’s Rights on Thursday, March 10 at the Beverly Hilton. The organization is dedicated to protecting the rights of abused and neglected children and foster youth.

Put Programmatic TV to Work for You Today

Vincent D’Onofrio (Law & Order; Criminal Intent) has been cast as the Wizard of Oz in upcoming NBC 10-episode drama Emerald City. Adria Arjona (True Detective) plays Dorothy.

ADVERTISING AND BRANDS

Millennials not only have the highest levels of trust in online and mobile advertising (no surprise there), they also showed the highest level of trust in 18 of 19 advertising formats, including TV, and are the most willing to take action on 16 of the 19 formats, according to a new study from Nielsen. “Millennials consume media differently than their older counterparts, exercising greater control over when and where they watch, listen and read content – and on which device,” said Randall Beard, president, Nielsen Expanded Verticals. “But even if they rely less heavily on traditional channels, their trust and willingness to act on these formats remains high. While an integrated, multi-channel approach is best across all generations, it carries even more importance when reaching Millennials.”

Ad buyers are moving about 10 percent of their TV budgets to digital platforms, according to AOL’s new “State of the Video Industry” report. “Brands and agencies are looking to digital to address the need for device-agnostic video consumption, as well as explore alternatives to the cost of TV advertising, which has increased 29% since 2012,” said the report. Digital video ad spending in the U.S. surged 42 percent over the last year, to hit $7.46 billion.

GLOBAL GOINGS ON

Disney is launching a streaming service in the UK. For about $15/month, Disneylife will offer  Disney Channel episodes, TV series, animated and live action movies, and content from books and albums. France, Spain, Italy and Germany could be next – but not the U.S., where right now the service could conflict with other content deals.

A 90-minute Sherlock Christmas special will be released in Chinese theaters, subject to regulatory approval. No airdate for the show has been named for UK’s  BBC One or PBS in the U.S.
