CYNOPSIS
10.21.14

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, October 21, 2014, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Tonight’s Premieres:
Discovery Family: Big, Bigger, Biggest: Supersized at 10p
Lifetime: Tru Tori at 9p

Tonight’s Finales:
Bravo: Below Deck at 9p

Fox gave a straight-to-series order for comedy/horror anthology Scream Queens, from Glee creators Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan. 20th Century Fox Television and Murphy Television will produce. The first installment, set for a fall 2015 bow, revolves around a college campus rocked by a series of murders. “We loved every element of the pitch for this show,” said Fox Television Group chairman Dana Walden and Gary Newman, “a genre-bending concept which blends true horror with big comedic moments.”

IN THE NEWS

Turner Broadcasting struck a deal with Disney for the network TV premiere rights to upcoming live-action Cinderella and Jungle Book films. The agreement covers Turner’s cable net portfolio, including TBS, TNT and Cartoon Network, for broadcast two years after the movies’ theatrical release. “These movies are the kind of tent-pole releases that will fit perfectly with Turner’s ever-growing stable of blockbuster titles,” said Deborah K. Bradley, SVP, head of program acquisitions, content strategy and licensing for Turner Broadcasting. Cinderella hits theaters in March, 2015; The Jungle Book arrives in October of next year.

Bethenny Frankel is returning to The Real Housewives of New York for season seven. Frankel left the Bravo reality show after season three, citing drama between cast members (no!), moving on to two spin-off shows and then a talker, Bethenny, that was canceled after one season in May. “Bethenny is one of the most popular Housewives in the history of the franchise, and I couldn’t be more excited she is coming home,” said Housewives exec producer Andy Cohen. The most recent finale of RHONY delivered a .64 rating among A18-49, versus 1.3 for the season three closer.

Vice News premiered on linear TV in France on Monday, with independent bureaus planned for in Germany, Italy, Spain, Australian Brazil and Mexico over the next six months. Launched in March in the U.S. and U.K., Vice News has earned over one million subscribers on YouTube, as well as a reputation for in-depth coverage; its half-hour weekly program for HBO won an Emmy.

Lionsgate and Tribeca Enterprises are teaming for Tribeca Short List, a subscription VOD service to debut in the first half of 2015. Tribeca CEO Jane Rosenthal described the service as “a highly curated experience that disrupts the ‘more-is-more’ model in today’s streaming on-demand landscape.”

Most TV watchers prefer time-shifted viewing, according to a new survey. Marketing agency Hill Holliday and Research Now polled 500 U.S. adults and found 41 percent favored live viewing. But a traditional TV was the top device for 91 percent of respondents.

FX Networks launches “Simpsons World” today. The interactive digital and online experience provides authenticated users with clips, a newsfeed, social media updates, fun facts and instant on-demand access to all 552 episodes of the first 25 seasons; eps from the current season will be available the day after their original broadcast on Fox. “Hello, ‘Simpsons World,’ goodbye free time,” said Simpsons exec producer Al Jean. “Seriously.”

Sinead O’Connor did not take kindly to Dick Clark Productions’ supposed efforts via Twitter to secure Pope Francis to introduce her on the American Music Awards. In a post on her web site, the “Nothing Compares 2 U” singer, who famously ripped a photo of Pope John Paul II on Saturday Night Live in 1992, said her record company had been contacted about her appearing on the awards show, only to be informed that after the Pope failed to answer their requests, DCP was passing on an O’Connor performance. “I never heard anything so warped and disrespectful to both the Pope and myself,” said “O’Connor. Never happened, AMA sources told TMZ. In any case, the show will go on: AMAs air live on Sunday, November 23 on ABC, with Pitbull returning as host.

The winner of Univision’s Va Por Ti gets more than bragging rights – a new collaboration with Warner Music means first prize will be a recording contract. The partnership with Warner “raises the competitive stakes even higher, and further elevates our commitment to properly launch the winners of our reality programs,” said Alberto Ciurana, president of programming and content, Univision Communications. Talent competition has its finale Sunday, December 7.

Glamour Magazine joins Investigation Discovery as co-host of the second annual “Inspire a Difference” event on Wednesday, October 22 in NYC. Rosario Dawson, Marcia Gay Harden, Tamara Taylor and Stephanie March, along with their charity partners, will be honored for their commitment to supporting victims and inspiring others.

TLC is partnering with PACER’s National Bullying Center. Starting on Unity Day, Wednesday, October 22. TLC will turn its logo orange in support of the cause, and network talent will speak out against bullying in videos featured on TLC.com and social media platforms.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

On the heels of near-record-high quarters, HGTV and DIY gave the greenlight to seven new series. HGTV grabbed America’s Most Desperate Kitchens, starring popular cousins John Colaneri and Anthony Carrino; city-ditching Log Cabin Living; renovation series Shalina Joy Project (wt) and Real Estate Riches (wt), while DIY ordered flipping shows First Time Flippers and Miami Rehab, and The Treehouse Guys, about treetop structures. Sense a pattern? “We’re hyper-focused on developing and producing series that give viewers fresh perspectives on popular home themes,” said Allison Page, GM for the nets.

Netflix is partnering with Canada’s City for a series starring Jennette McCurdy (iCarly). Season one of Between, in production now, will premiere on City and upcoming Canadian streaming service Shomi in Canada, and on Netflix outside the region.

Bookclub, a comedy about female friends pretending to be in a literary group, has landed at ABC with script commitment plus penalty. The comedy comes from former Mixology co-exec producers Patti Carr and Lara Olsen, UnbeliEVAble Entertainment and Universal Television.
