Put Programmatic TV to Work for You Today

Programmatic TV can begin to work for your video business today and to expand to deliver new revenues in the future. Download the whitepaper to learn:

1. What programmatic TV is?

2. How it will grow and evolve, especially in the U.S. market

3. Three ways broadcasters and operators can make the most of it today

IN THE NEWS

NBC cut the orders for midseason comedies Superstore and Hot & Bothered from 13 episodes each to 11. Superstore stars Ugly Betty’s America Ferrera; Eva Longoria tops Hot. Blame NBC’s packed midseason bench and a summer crowded with the Olympics and NHL playoffs.

PBS is keeping Eddie Murphy’s comments about Bill Cosby in its edited broadcast of the 18th annual Mark Twain Prize for American Humor ceremony. Well, most of them. “Our intention is to include Mr. Murphy’s acceptance speech in its entirety,” said PBS on Monday. “In order to comply with FCC regulations regarding profanity, audio bleeps will be used as necessary.” Murphy accepted the award Sunday night at the Kennedy Center; ceremony is scheduled to air Monday, November 23.

So, will NBC cave to pressure from Hispanic organizations and scratch Donald Trump as host of November 7’s Saturday Night Live? “If they want to do the show with one third the ratings they might do that,” (joked? bragged?) the Republican presidential candidate on Fox News’ Fox & Friends on Monday. “I don’t see that at all.” A petition on Move.org to bump Trump has gathered over 125,000 signatures.

Though media companies including Turner, Fox Sports, A+E Networks and NBCUniversal have agreed to make content available for YouTube’s upcoming $10/month (or so) ad-free subscription service, they aren’t all happy with the revenue split terms, reports the Wall Street Journal. Content creators will reportedly get 55 percent of the overall sub revenue, sliced and diced according to the amount of time people spend on particular videos. But like it or not, faced with signing onto the service or having their videos yanked from the free version of YouTube, a valuable marketing tool, media companies are signing on. For now.

Over 50 projects have been selected from among submissions for Ovation crowdfunding initiative Creative Studio, designed to discover and support talented artists. Among those featured: singer/songwriter will.i.am’s i.am.angel Foundation, seeking to raise funds for a robotics program in East LA.

RETURNING SERIES

The sixth and final season of Downton Abbey premieres on PBS Sunday January 3, while Call the Midwife is back for season five Sunday, April 3. The exact dates of the last hurrah of Mr. Selfridge are TBA, but the season will launch March/April-ish. Newcomer Mercy Street gets a Downton-led launch on Sunday, January 17.

Downton Abbey fans: Are you skipping ahead and following season six as it airs in the UK? (Talk about bloody Sunday….) Let us know in the new Cynopsis poll.

Dig in: Season three of History’s The Curse of Oak Island launches Tuesday, November 10 at 9p, with treasure hunters Rick and Marty Lagina finally ready to go underground to find out what’s lying beneath that island. Companion series The Curse of Oak Island: Drilling Down premieres at 8p, with five subsequent episodes beginning January 5 at 10p.

The sophomore season of E!’s The Royals picks up eight weeks after the season one murder of King Simon, as Eleanor finds solace in drugs and drink. And sex. Soapy drama launches Sunday, November 15 at 10p.

Spike greenlit an eighth season of Ink Master, including 15 eps plus a live finale, to go into production in March 2016. Season six of the tattoo competition wrapped October 13 averaging 2.4 million viewers, the number one ranked show on cable among A18-49 in its Tuesday timeslot.

Lucky season 13 of Bravo’s Top Chef kicks off with a two-night premiere Wednesday, December 2 and Thursday, December 3 at 10p. Host Padma Lakshmi and head judge Tom Colicchio are back, alongside judges Gail Simmons, Richard Blais and Emeril (BAM!) Lagasse. Regular time slot: Thursdays at 10p.

Season three of PBS’s Finding Your Roots will untangle the family trees of Julianne Moore, Keenan Ivory Wayans and Shonda Rimes, among others, starting Tuesday, January 5 at 8p. The new season was delayed after it was revealed that host Henry Louis Gates, Jr. had violated PBS standards by not informing execs of guest Ben Affleck’s request to censor the fact that his ancestors had been slave owners. After its investigation, the production company added to research staff.

ADVERTISING

Kantar Media is getting more social. The company is adding social media engagement metrics to its data, via a partnership with Unmetric, starting in November. “As we continue to expand our digital and mobile analytic offerings, the ability to integrate brand social media engagement metrics is critical,” said George Carens, president of Kantar Media Intelligence. “With this new service, our clients will now have the opportunity to understand and make informed decisions on the total message being delivered by a brand across its paid, owned and earned media presence.”

The digital publishing industry has no one but themselves to blame for ad blocking, said the Interactive Advertising Bureau in an online statement. The IAB also offers a new set of advertising standards. As publishers pursue the maximization of margins at the expense of user experience, “The fast, scalable systems of targeting users with ever-heftier advertisements have slowed down the public internet and drained more than a few batteries,” said the IAB. One step in the right direction: the L.E.A.N. (Light, Encrypted, Ad choice supported, Non-invasive ads) Ads program, offering “principles that will help guide the next phases of advertising technical standards for the global digital advertising supply chain.”
