10.20.14

Good morning. It’s Monday, October 20, 2014, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Tonight’s Premieres:
CBS: The Millers at 8:30p
Food: Hungry Games at 8p
TBS: American Dad at 9p

Secrets of the Earth at 9p

Cord cutters, be careful what you wish for. With CBS and HBO planning stand-alone streaming services, al a carte viewing is getting more attainable, but “you are going to have to pay more for less choice,” RBC Capital Markets analyst David Bank told the Wall Street Journal. That’s a sentiment echoed at the Cynopsis Future TV Summit last Thursday. “A la carte is not as cheap as people might think,” said Evan Silverman, SVP, Digital Media at A+E Networks. “The cable bundle might be ripe for price adjustment, but for most people, it’s a pretty good deal.”

IN THE NEWS

Fox cut the order for Mulaney from 16 to the 13 already completed. The comedy premiered to a soft 1.0 rating among A18-49, but improved to 1.1 its second outing, and will continue in its Sunday-at-9:30p timeslot.

Former Dancing With the Stars contestant Leah Remini returns to the ABC competition tonight, this time as co-host. The Leah Remini: It’s All Relative star is filling in for Erin Andrews, busy with World Series duties. “I hope ABC has a delay, gonna speak my mind!” warned Remini. Season 19 of Dancing airs Mondays at 8p.

A contestant on VH1’s Dating Naked whose very private parts were inadvertently shown for a split second has no right to the $10 million she’s suing for, said Viacom in a motion for dismissal. Calling Jess Nizewitz a “former model and sometime actress who wanted a shot at fame,” Viacom says Nizewitz signed “not one but three” agreements expressly agreeing to be filmed fully nude, with producers having sole discretion on how the footage was edited. What’s more, stated Viacom, Nizewitz waived her right to sue and is now liable for attorneys fee.

Singer/actress/talk show host Queen Latifah will host CBS’s inaugural broadcast of the Hollywood Film Awards. Show airs live from Hollywood Friday, November 14 at 8p, preceded by a red carpet special at 7:30p.

Lifetime’s not betting on a second season of The Lottery. After premiering to 1.1 million total viewer in July, the thriller went on to average a soft 700,000 in Live+SD.

The dispute between 21st Century Fox and Tribune Media over Fox’s demand for higher programming fees to remain on Seattle station KCPQ-TV ended Friday. “As part of the extended affiliation agreement Tribune has agreed, as of January 2015, to pay additional programming fees to Fox for prime time and sports content provided by the networks,” said Tribune. Fox withdrew the notice of termination it sent Tribune in September; the new deal runs through 2018.

Former American Idol contestant Joanne Borgella died October 18 at age 32 after a battle with endometrial cancer that she had taken public. Borgella, who appeared on season seven of Idol, won season one of Oxygen’s Mo’Nique’s Fat Chance, and appeared on MTV’s Made as well as NUVOtv’s Curvy Girls. “Joanne made a choice to…be a fighter and share her journey with the world,” said her family on Facebook. “Her faith, courage and strength were unshaken through every obstacle she encountered.”
