PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

In a nod to a new generation of video fans, who prefer short-form content, Comedy Central has greenlit a series in which comedian Doug Benson lampoons syndicated court programs in a “strip” series consisting of 15-minute chunks. Show is set to debut in early 2017 and might be considered for a late-night run.

On the heels of its successful first installment, The People v. O.J. Simpson, Ryan Murphy’s American Crime Story was renewed for a third season by FX. Details on the next project are being kept mum, however Deadline reports that they’ve heard the title of the new 10-episode installment will be Versace/Cunanan and center on the July 1997 assassination of designer Gianni Versace by sociopath and serial killer Andrew Cunanan.

CBS ordered Candy Crush, a one-hour, live action game show series based on the mobile game franchise. CBS, Lionsgate and King teamed on the new format created and executive produced by Matt Kunitz, which will be distributed domestically by CBS Television Distribution and internationally by Lionsgate. Series features teams of two using their wits and physical agility to compete on interactive game boards.

CBS is developing Totally Laime, inspired by Elizabeth Laime’s popular podcast, from Inside Amy Schumer writer Tami Sagher and Thruline Entertainment. Co-written and EPed by Laime and Sagher, the comedy is inspired by Laime and her husband Andy and focuses on a young couple who document their relationship through a podcast.

Participant Media partnered with Hoop Dreams director Steve James on its first limited non-scripted TV series, America to Me. It is also creating a scripted series with the team from the film Spotlight, which will explore journalists writing important stories.

Wilshire Studios, unscripted sister studio of Universal Cable Productions (UCP), inked an overall deal with Aliyah Silverstein. Under the pact, Silverstein, who recently executive produced the live Mr. Robot after-show, Hacking Robot, for Wilshire Studios on USA Network, will expand her relationship with the studio to create, develop and produce original unscripted projects.

Yankee magazine and WGBH partnered to produce Weekends With Yankee, a new travel and lifestyle series named for the long-running publication. Series will take viewers on an insider’s exploration from city to countryside in New England. Filming begins this month with show slated to premiere nationally on public television stations in April 2017.

ADVERTISING

The relationship between brands and consumers has reached a crucial turning point, says Joe Van Brussel, director of content strategy for Huffington Post/AOL Partner Studio. "The fate of marketing could very well be decided in the next two to three years based on how companies choose to view their customers," Van Brussel tells Cynopsis. "With this in mind, the decision to create branded content has to be keenly aligned with the interests of the target audience. Forcing the inclusion of your product in a disparate storyline doesn’t add value to the people you’re aiming to reach. But when you dive deep into the passions and interests of your audience, and tell a story that connects and resonates with them on an emotional level, branded content is elevated far beyond traditional advertising." Van Brussel joins presenters from CNN Courageous, BEN and A+E Networks for Thursday’s Cynopsis webinar, How to Sell and Produce the Branded Content Advertisers Need Now. To register, go here: go http://www.cynopsis.com/webinar/produce-branded-content-advertisers-need-now/.
