TOP NEWS

Last week, John Bain, the YouTube and Twitch gaming star known as TotalBiscuit, revealed to his Twitter followers that he has inoperable cancer. Bain had seemingly beaten bowel cancer earlier this year. “The cancer in the bowel is gone, but spots have appeared in my liver,” he wrote. “They’re not operable and there’s no cure. Average life expectancy is 2-3 years, though there are outliers that live much longer.” Want to feel heartened? A short time later, Bain tweeted something else, and it’s glorious: “[Expletive] this stupid disease. The average is going up after I’m done with it.”

3.6 billion dollars may sound like a lot of money…and it is. That’s how much Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba has offered Chinese streaming company YouKu Tudou to acquire all outstanding shares of the company. (Alibaba already owns 18.3% of YouKu Tudou.) One of China’s two largest streaming providers (along with Tencent), about 500 million monthly users watch YouKu Toudu’s movies, user-generated content, and TV shows. The company says that Chairman and CEO Victor Koo supports the buyout. Under the terms of the offer, he would continue leading the company. The deal is subject to shareholder approval.

NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS

As linear news networks work to stake out a digital presence, Newsy just went in the opposite direction. The millennial-oriented digital news network has partnered with TV broadcaster Raycom Media: Raycom will feature Newsy content across its nearly 40 owned and operated linear channels, as well as all of its digital platforms. “In addition to providing relevant news to our consumers, [Newsy] provides sought-after video placement opportunities for our advertisers,” said Joe Fiveash, Raycom’s VP of digital. The deal comes barely a week after Newsy launched on streaming platform PlutoTV.

Even Reddit is getting into original programming. According to a video announcement from company co-founder Alexis Ohanian, the company will be launching Formative, a Google-sponsored web series focused on the revolutionary ideas of innovators in multiple fields. Currently, Reddit is fielding suggestions from its user base as to which innovators should be profiled. The series will ultimately debut on Upvoted, Reddit’s yet-to-be unveiled news site.

Any streaming library can use some librarians. On Friday, Hulu added season one of The Librarians in an exclusive streaming deal with TNT. The drama series stars Noah Wyle and Rebecca Romijn. Season two premieres on TNT November 1.

Amazon’s getting the royal treatment. The company gained exclusive SVOD rights to season one of The Royals, E!’s first scripted drama. The season went live on the company’s Prime streaming service Friday. The show’s second season debuts on E! November 15.

Time Warner Cable and Bright House Networks customers will have a whole lot more college sports to watch. Thanks to a new streaming pact with SEC Network and SEC Network +, customers of both networks will be able to stream Southeastern Athletic Conference sporting events live on WatchESPN. The deal went into effect Friday.

CONTENT PROGRAMMING

The Outfield, A new teen drama from Fullscreen Films, will be released exclusively on iTunes come November 10. The film stars Vine celebs Nash Grier and Cameron Dallas. (In case the title didn’t give it away, their characters are baseball players.) Fullscreen Films is the production arm of the MCN Fullscreen, which has announced plans to launch an upcoming SVOD network (exact launch date still unknown). The Outfield will be available on the service.

As is Amazon’s wont, the company is releasing six new TV pilots at once and letting them duke it out in the arena of public opinion for a chance at a full season order. The twist: This time the voters will be kids. (Okay, probably their parents.) On November 5, Amazon will release six new kid-friendly series, including a preschool-oriented adaptation of classic book series If You Give a Mouse a Cookie. (Learn about all the pilots here.) The pilots’ November 5 release comes the same day as the release of 6 previously announced adult-oriented series.

Fore! The Southern Calfornia Golf Association (SCGA) launched a new web series. Celebrities in Golf Carts is, well, what it sounds like: In each episode, host Mark Willard hits the links with a celeb guest, playing the front nine before grabbing a beer in the clubhouse. (Apparently the celebrities can’t muster the endurance for all 18?) Two episodes of the six-episode first season been released, starring The Big Bang Theory’s Kunal Nayyar and comedian Rob Riggle. The series is available on YouTube, here.

Issa Rae’s leap to TV is complete. The writer and actress, known for the well-regarded web series Misadventures of an Awkward Black Girl, had already received an HBO pilot order for a new series. That was back in February; now, HBO has greenlit a full season. The show, titled Insecure, will be a half-hour comedy centering on the friendship between two African American women. Rae developed the show alongside The Nightly Show’s Larry Wilmore. Rae will star alongside Yvonne Orji, Jay Ellis, and Lisa Joyce, while Prentice Penny will act as showrunner. No release date has been announced.

VIRTUAL REALITY

“Cardboard” is the name of Google’s free VR viewing appwhich means it’s also a trademark. So if Google thinks you’ve infringed on it, you’re very much out of luck. Starting last week, Google began removing apps with “Cardboard” in their titles from the Google Play store. Removed apps include Cardboard VNC and Cardboard Catapult. At least two developers took to Google+ to detail their plans to rename their apps and resubmit them for Google’s approval.

EDUCATION

The USC School of Cinematic Arts is partnering with action-camera company GoPro on a new program. GoPro has donated cameras (and other accessories) to the school, to be used in students’ curriculums beginning this fall. The new program will include workshops and education. In addition, USC students will have the opportunity to win cash prizes. And GoPro will likely select some students’ work to be featured through its new weekly GoPro Awards initiative.

DIGITAL CONTENT CREATORS

Score one for the content creators. Last week, a federal judge mostly sided with digital production company Equals Three Studios in a copyright spat with viral clip licensing company Jukin Media. Equals Three had used Jukin-licensed clips in 19 videos; California Judge Stephen V. Wilson ruled that 18 of the 19 videos were protected by fair use. The deciding factor was “transformativeness”: Wilson decided that Equals Three’s videos parodied, criticized, or commented on Jukin’s clips, rendering Jukin’s copyright complaints moot in regard to all but one of the 19 videos. The case carries potentially significant connotations for digital copyright law.

What does YouTube have in common with the federal judiciary? It’s making life easier for content creators. The company made changes to its Creator Studio App, which is designed to let content creators manage their channels. The updated app introduces new analytics features: Creators can see the top search terms that viewers used to find their videos; they can also see where in the world their videos were viewed. In addition, the new app also makes it easier for users to monetize their videos – creators can now select among different ad formats. And it’s now much easier for creators to edit playlists, and add or remove videos.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Crackle, Sony’s OTT service, has added a linear heavyweight to its team. Adam Lewison will serve as Senior VP of Programming, Marketing and Operations. He will oversee content acquisition and scheduling, and lead the company’s marketing efforts.  Most recently, Lewison served as Senior Vice President of Programming and Production at FX Networks.

DIGITAL SPOTLIGHT

Ready for some Heavy Petting? Awesome! But it’s not what you think. Amy Poehler’s Smart Girls at the Party digital network teamed up with the ASPCA to launch a new digital series celebrating Adopt a Shelter Dog Month. Each episode of Heavy Petting focuses on an individual dog or cat (who happens to be voiced by a celebrity). The first episode features the voice talents of comedian John Mulaney, who flawlessly captures the short attention span of a jittery canine. It’s only 88 seconds long – watch it here.

See you tomorrow,
David Teich
