2. How it will grow and evolve, especially in the U.S. market

3. Three ways broadcasters and operators can make the most of it today

IN THE NEWS

Fox gave a full season order for Empire lead-in Rosewood. The freshman medical drama is averaging a 2.4 rating among A18-49 and 7.8 million viewers in Live+3 estimates. “Rosewood has proven to be a real self-starter for us, which is a tremendous feat on this highly competitive night,” said Fox entertainment president David Madden.

After a finale on September 3 that featured the wedding of Officer Andy McNally and Det. Sam Swarek, ABC is not bringing back summer series Rookie Blue for a seventh season. “The series reached a natural conclusion,” said Christine Shipton, SVP and chief creative officer at Shaw Media. “This season’s finale was the perfect wrap-up for both our rookies and for fans.”

Also not coming back: Syfy’s Defiance. In its third season, the experimental drama averaged 1.1 million viewers in Live+SD, down 28 percent from season two. “Defiance was a truly groundbreaking series, delivering an immersive, cross-platform experience that transcended the television screen in a way that viewers had never seen before,” said the net in a statement.

After GOP presidential contenders Donald Trump and Ben Carson threatened on Thursday to boycott the October 28 CNBC debate if the net didn’t set a time limit and allow opening and closing statements, the Republican National Committee and CNBC agreed to a two-hour limit, and to include 30-second statements. On Fox News Sunday, Trump told Chris Wallace, “The people can’t take it. Who wants to watch a debate for three hours?” As for Republican rival Carly Fiorina’s contention that Trump was “scared” to engage in another three-hour debate, Trump boasted, “I could stand there for 20 hours.”

Count the National Hispanic Leadership Agenda among those shuddering at the thought of more airtime for Trump. The advocacy group is calling for the candidate’s removal as host of Saturday Night Live on November 7, saying in a open letter to NBCUniversal CEO Steve Burke, “We are appalled that you would enable Trump’s hateful speech…and ask that you rescind the invitation.” A MoveOn.org petition to dump Trump from SNL has over 100,000 signatures.

Former The View senior producer Jennifer Shepard-Brookman is suing Rosie O’Donnell for slander. The lawsuit claims the former co-host of the ABC daytimer “publicly accused Ms. Brookman of betraying professional and personal confidences and leaking certain sensitive information to the media,” allegations Brookman, who says she was let go after 14 years, denies.

CBS has refused to carry ads for Truth, the film starring Robert Redford as Dan Rather and Cate Blanchett as CBS News producer Mary Mapes. Truth recounts the events surrounding a discredited 2004 60 Minutes II story questioning then-President George W. Bush’s military record. “It’s astounding how little truth there is in Truth,” said CBS Corp. spokesman Gil Schwartz. “The film tries to turn gross errors of journalism and judgment into acts of heroism and martyrdom.” Truth is based on the book by Mapes, who was fired after documents for her story could not be verified; Rather also left the network in 2006. Callan Advertising had attempted to place ads in Late Show, CBS Evening News, CBS This Morning …and 60 Minutes.

Cablevision and Viacom resolved an antitrust lawsuit and are “simultaneously entering into mutually beneficial business arrangements,” said the companies. Cablevision, which has agreed to be acquired by belt-tightening Altice, had accused Viacom of forcing it to pay for unwanted cable channels.

ID and Glamour magazine announced domestic violence survivor and founder of the #WhyIStayed social media movement Beverly Gooden is the winner of the 2015 Inspire a Difference “Everyday Hero” award. ID’s multiplatform public affairs campaign is designed to inform a national dialogue around topics such as domestic violence, abuse, bullying, and civil rights, while encouraging viewers to take action.

Hulu nabbed exclusive SVOD rights to past episodes of TNT drama The Librarians. Season one episodes are available to stream now, ahead of the season two launch on cable.

Dynamic ad insertion in cable VOD grew 40 percent in 3Q15 versus the same period last year, according to Canoe. Chris Pizzuro, head of product sales and marketing for Canoe, told FierceCable that factors contributing to the fast growth on DAI impressions include the footprint of measurable marketing exceeding 35 million homes versus 32 million, programmers getting onboard, and an influx of advertisers. “Brands are recognizing this is a good addition to their media plans,” said Pizzuro, “with many starting to allocate at least 5 percent of their budgets to VOD.”
