Charter Communications is laying off 258 staffers, mainly in financial roles, as it begins the process of combining Charter, Time Warner Cable and Bright House Networks. Layoffs will begin November 1 and be completed by the end of June. Ultimately, Charter plans to add 20,000 jobs by bringing call centers work back from overseas, insourcing other work and “growing to meet our customer demands,” said a Charter spokesman.

NBC rescheduled a Donald Trump-ish episode of Law & Order: SVU from October 26 until after Election Day, November 8. The episode features Gary Cole as a wealthy businessman/presidential hopeful whose campaign is derailed by women with damaging accusations.

With Billy Bush absent from Today thanks to the crude, oft-replayed 2005 Access Hollywood tape of Bush and Trump, Harry Connick Jr. will fill in during the 9a hour with Tamron Hall today and tomorrow. Connick Jr., host of NBC Universal TV Distribution daytime talker Harry, announced the news via Twitter.

The SAG-AFTRA National Board of Directors voted unanimously to extend the contract of David White. White will remain the National Executive Director, a position he has held since 2012 and at SAG prior to the merger from 2009-2012, through October 11, 2020.

Ahead of the election, The Paley Center for Media will present a program with leaders including Norman Lear, Kenya Barris, Gloria Calderon-Kellett, Willow Bay and more, to explore how technology and storytelling are raising awareness about cultural, political, and social issues. Advancing the Story: The Next Chapter in Media Impact takes place on Wednesday, November 2 at the Paley Center in Beverly Hills.

The season two premiere of WE tv’s Growing Up Hip Hop captures the recording and debut of a new song by Master P, father of Romeo Miller, one of the stars of Growing Up Hip Hop who is also appearing on the current season of hit hip hop drama Empire. Broken by Master P is now available on iTunes and Spotify. Hip Hop airs Thursdays at 9p.

Creators and stars of WGN America’s Underground and Outsiders will appear this month at New York Television Festival

Radio One Inc. is saluting its founder and chairperson, Cathy Hughes, for being the new namesake for Howard University’s School of Communication, with an integrated, cross-platform congratulatory promotion and special programming across its 56 Radio One stations, TV One, 10 nationally syndicated Reach Media radio programs and branded websites. Today, Hughes will be a guest on the urban media company’s syndicated shows and on Wednesday, October 19, TV One will telecast of marathon of Hughes interviews during her days as host of One on One with Cathy Hughes

NBC goes digital to find new musical talent in The Stream, featuring music industry titans searching for future stars via the Internet and social media. Wannabe talent can upload videos to the show’s online platform; the 100 most streamed musicians will be invited to a showcase, with finalists competing in a weekly live show. Based on a Norwegian format, The Stream is produced by Universal Television Alternative Studio in association with Monster, TV2, Nordic World and Little Hill.

Reese Witherspoon’s Pacific Standard and Anonymous Content are partnering for a series based on bestseller First Women: The Grace & Power of America’s Modern First Ladies. Robin Wright (House of Cards) will direct and executive produce.

Velocity gave the green light to The Alex Vega Project (wt), an original series from Muse Entertainment focused on custom car designer Vega. Show is slated to premiere in 2Q17.

Deadline founder Nikki Finke landed a first-look TV deal with HBO for content from her fiction website Hollywood Dementia. Adaptations will be produced by Finke and Christine Vachon (Killer Films).

SundanceTV ordered a four-part true crime documentary event series, Murder in the Heartland: In Cold Blood Revisited (wt), based on the Truman Capote book, In Cold Blood. The series will be produced and directed by documentary filmmaker Joe Berlinger. SundanceTV will feature the 1967 film, in its 50th anniversary year, as part of the programming event.

Smithsonian Channel greenlit The Real Jesus of Nazareth, featuring British actor Robert Powell, who played the Son of God in 1977 miniseries Jesus of Nazareth. Powell goes on a journey through Israel reconstructing the story of Jesus in the four-parter from Impossible Factual, which will include footage from the miniseries.

CBS is developing a comedy inspired by the life of football star Calais Campbell, about a player who moves to a gated community and finds his family wants to move in. The Whole Nine comes from Eric and Kim Tannenbaum and CBS Television Studios.

Legal drama Reversible Error is in development at NBC. Universal Television is producing the project, from Barbara Curry (The Boy Next Door) and Chris Morgan (Fast & Furious), with Chris Morgan Productions.

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

Syfy renewed Van Helsing for a second season. The action-horror drama just debuted September 23; production on 13 new episodes is slated to begin in January. “The team is very thankful and ready to go – ready to get back on the road to Denver and to spill a lot of blood along the way,” said showrunner Neil LaBute.

The Africa Channel’s fall slate boasts four new acquisitions from the African content. Series include sci-fi show Room 9, premiering Halloween; culinary competition The Ultimate Braai Master; baking show Di Ya Wela and lifestyle series The Fattening Room, which places six women in a traditional finishing school.

SundanceTV and FremantleMedia International announced that international co-production Deutschland83 has been picked up for season 2. The networks will co-produce the spy thriller with UFA Fiction.

Bravo’s Top Chef heads to Charleston for a new season starting Thursday, December 1 at 10p. Also on Bravo: new docu-series Married to Medicine Houston bows Friday, November 11 at 9p with back-to-back episodes. The Married to Medicine franchise extender settles into its regular 10p slot the following week.

New episodes of Travel Channel’s Expedition Unknown launch Wednesday, November 2 at 9p, with explorer Josh Gates digging into the missing fortune of an Old West sheriff.

Z Living wants to keep it clean for the holidays with two new series. Renovation salvager House Poor debuts Tuesday, October 18 at 8p, followed by Family Style with Chef Jeff offering better kitchen choices starting Monday, November 7 at 9p. “With most fourth quarter programming so heavily focused on excess, our goal is to provide content associated with the holidays in smart, fun and unexpected ways,” said Tim Krubsack, EVP and head of programming.

MTV’s Scream was renewed for an abbreviated 6-episode season 3, premiering in 2017. The first two seasons had 10 and 13 episodes. The series’ sophomore run averaged 377,000 Live+SD viewers.

Nat Geo WILD gets Wonderfully Weird on Monday, October 31. Parts 1 and 2 of the show offer an up close look at bizarre animals at 9p and 9:30p, following a day-long Halloween programming event focused on scary creatures.

Comedy Dynamics is teaming with iN Demand to offer classic stand-up titles to Comcast customers. Launch includes specials from Tom Segura, Tim Allen, Whitney Cummings, Craig Ferguson and more.

The milestone 100th episode of TV One’s Fatal Attraction airs tonight at 9p. The crime and justice series is the flagship show for the net’s “True Crime Mondays” slate.

Meghan Trainor, Jill Scott, Zara Larsson and Little Big Town’s Karen Fairchild have been added to the lineup of performers for the 2016 CMT Artists of the Year special, airing Thursday, October 20 at 9p. Olympic gold medalists Aly Raisman and Madison Kocian, along with Arsenio Hall, join the roster of presenters.

Grammy-nominated songwriter Charli XCX will host Freeform’s “13 Nights of Halloween” programming stunt, featuring interstitials from October 19  31. Freeform viewers will get an exclusive sneak peek at Charli’s new single, “After the Afterparty,” set for wide release on October 28.

HBO’s All Def Comedy Special airs Saturday, November 12 at 10p. The show is based on weekly All Def Comedy Live, produced by Russell Simmons’ All Def Digital.

CASTING

Marisa Ryan will reprise the role of Abby in Netflix’s Wet Hot American Summer: Ten Years Later, sequel to the 2015 series and 2001 film. Mark Feuerstein (Royal Pains) is an addition to the cast.

Also on Netflix: DeWanda Wise (Shots Fired) landed the lead role of Nola Darling in the streaming service’s She’s Gotta Have It, a 10-episode update of the 1986 Spike Lee film.

Cat Deeley (So You Think You Can Dance) will voice a character in a special episode of Kate & Mim-Mim, coming up on Disney Junior.

ADVERTISING

NBC is extending its partnership with American Express to reduce commercial load during Today this week. The partnership will add 27 minutes of programming, with segments that acknowledge Amex’s role but are Today, not branded, content. Branded content will appear on Today.com. It’s no surprise Amex is focused on the morning show – during February’s daylong Leap Day stunt, the credit card company got the most viewer engagement during Today show segments.

Despite concerns over ROI, fraud and viewability, by 2020 digital advertising will have a 51 percent market share, according to a new forecast from Magna Global, rising to $105 billion. “Among the factors that are fueling the rapid growth of social video is the interest of big brands that were previously spending very little on social networks and are now willing to take advantage of the huge scale and reach provided by social networks,” says the report. “Despite the recent glitch in Facebook viewing metrics, we believe the appeal of video advertising within social networks (not only auto-play commercials in newsfeeds but also, potentially, live event streaming as experienced by Twitter and the NFL) is here to stay.”

Horizon Media programmatic trading desk HX is teaming with programmatic intelligence org Ad/Fin. “We compete everyday with agencies and trading desks that claim transparency, but few, if any, can prove it,”said Adam Heimlich,SVP, managing director, programmatic, HX.“At Horizon, we stand by our commitment to accountability and see tools like Ad/Fin as key to practicing what we preach.”

History ended its 2016 financial year as the number 1 factual channel in the Philippines in prime among P+16. Miniseries Roots delivered the highest two-hour rating average ever for the net in the Philippines, with the finale the number one cable show for the night in its timeslot in English entertainment.

UK’s Channel 4 commissioned 360Production for The Last Heroes of the Somme, telling forgotten stories of the men involved in a British victory in WWI. The film is part of the channel’s Secret History documentary strand. On a different note, Channel 4 also ordered My Beauty Secret (wt), a special offering advice to people with visible facial conditions.

UK’s Icon Films and Natural History Film Unit Botswana acquired international distribution rights to Sky Vision’s Savage Kingdom, focused on warring animal clans. The series was commissioned by Nat Geo WILD as a global documentary event, to be broadcast starting November 19.

OZY Media announced its first ever television series, The Contenders, available in almost 200 countries and territories (excluding the U.S. and U.K.) via BBC World News. Each 45-minute episode features two candidates whose stories appear vastly different on the surface but share common elements that changed the outcomes of campaigns.

Night Watch is set to air on Nickelodeon in Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Poland and Norway. Studio One’s fantasy series made its debut on Flemish TV.

Canada’s Breakthrough Entertainment nabbed international distribution rights for two new original unscripted titles from the SVOD platform Feeln: Breaking Bread with Brooke Burke and Wonder Women.

London-based Buccaneer Media struck a deal with novelist Irvine Welsh to adapt his CRIME for TV. Dougray Scott (My Week with Marilyn) will star and exec produce.

Zig Zag Productions and ABC International, the format sales division of Asahi Broadcasting Corporation, inked a deal calling for Zig Zag to adapt format Power of Fantasy for the international market. Fantasy has aired on ABC in Japan as a segment from late night show Be-Bop! High Heel!.

Content Media has added Cardinal Releasing’s Emperor Media titles, directed and produced by Jon Brewer, to its offerings, including ‘90s special Beside Bowie: The Mick Ronson Story, mini-series Monochrome: Black, White & Blue and feature doc B.B. King: On the Road.

American Greetings Entertainment and Gaumont Animation entered into a long-term agreement to co-develop, co-produce and co-distribute a new animated series based on AGE 1980s brand Herself the Elf.

Quintus Media has sold Giant Constructions – The World’s Most Spectacular Bridges to French documentary channel RMC Decouverte. Germany’s Maximus Film GmbH produced.

Montreal-based Media Ranch announced Italy’s Cielo has acquired the rights to remake True Sex Confessions, which originally ran as a series by the Canadian French language lifestyle channel MOI & Cie.

Raw TV was commissioned by UK’s ITV to produce a three-part documentary, My Miracle Wedding (wt), about couples marrying against the odds.

Studio 100 Media signed two deals for Kosmoo, with Swedish kids’ channel SVT Barnkanalen and public kids’ broadcaster NRK Super, part of the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation. NRK Super also picked up two seasons of pre-teen show Night Watch.

DIGITAL DATA

Showtime is offering 360 degree virtual reality on campaign documentary series The Circus, its first foray into VR for a series. Video covers Hillary Clinton’s policy speech in Orlando, FL and Donald Trump’s campaign rally in Bedford, NH. The immersive extension of the series, featuring two of the series’ co-hosts, Mark Halperin and Mark McKinnon, offers viewers a first-person point of view of what it is like to attend these events.

Streaming service Urban Movie Channel presents the exclusive premiere of Knucklehead, starring Alfre Woodard and Gbenga Akinnagbe, following a neighborhood eccentric convinced prescription drugs can cure his mental disability. Premiere date is Friday, October 21.

Amazon is developing event series Bonfire of the Vanities, based on the 1987 Tom Wolfe bestseller, from Chuck Lorre Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television.

Hulu has added Newsy to its lineup. In addition to 30 news stories per day, the millennial-targeting content provider will publish longer-form content, including original series Americanize Me and My First President, to the subscription video service.

How to Get Away with Murder’s October 6 episode on ABC grew 125 percent from Live+SD to Live+7 viewing, to 2.7 among A18-49, the highest increase for any broadcast program so far this season.

CW’s season premiere of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow averaged 1.84 million viewers, a 34 percent gain over The Vampire Diaries season premiere in the same time period last season, and a 45 percent increase over last season’s time period average. Legends held its audience from last season’s finale, matching the finale rating in A18-34 (0.5/2) and in total viewers.

Friday freshmen MacGyver on CBS and The Exorcist on Fox held steady from the week prior with 1.1/4 and .7/3, respectively, in the A18-49 demo. ABC’s Shark Tank rose 9 percent, to a season high 1.2/5.

Hallmark Channel’s Chesapeake Shores ended its freshman run on October 9 driving the network to be the number 1 non-news cable network among HH (2.3) and Total Viewers (2.5 million) in Live+3 ratings and delivery in the 9-10p time period. For the season, Shores also became Hallmark Channel’s most-watched series in the network’s history among W25-54 and A25-54 on a Live+3 basis.
