IN THE NEWS

Strutting into the sunset: The 22nd cycle of America’s Next Top Model will be its last, ending Friday, December 4 on the CW. Tyra Banks, who has produced Model with Ken Mok since its 2003 debut on UPN, said via Twitter, “I truly believe it’s time. May your pics be forever fierce.” The net is in talks for a retrospective special.

Syfy supernatural drama Dominion, based on the 2010 film Legion, has been canceled after two seasons. “Led by [series creator]Vaun Wilmott, the talented cast, producers, writers and crew of Dominion have done a tremendous job bringing this ambitious, cinematic series to the screen over the past two seasons,” said the net. What turned out to be the series finale aired October 1.

The season five premiere of CBS’s 2 Broke Girls, originally scheduled for midseason, has been moved up to Thursday, November 12 at 9:30p. The comedy swaps places with new Jane Lynch comedy Angel From Hell, now keeping the midseason bench warm with Mike & Molly and The Odd Couple.

Presidential hopeful Donald Trump’s November 7 hosting gig on Saturday Night Live could get complicated for NBC affiliates. TV stations that give airtime to qualified candidates on non-news shows must afford other active, declared candidates the same amount of time. Affiliates are required to post the exact amount screen time a candidate gets – as they did after Hillary Clinton’s 3-minute SNL guest spot – and opponents have seven days to file an equal time notice with the FCC.

Dish Network was among those filing objections with the FCC to the proposed merger of Charter Communications with Time Warner Cable, pointing out it was much like the Comcast/TWC deal that the FCC failed to approve. What’s more, the new company would “have an acute incentive to thwart the quality” of Dish’s new online video service. “New Charter could sufficiently degrade Sling TV’s service so that the consumer would be more easily persuaded to drop the Sling TV service in favor of New Charter-provided linear video programming service,” said Dish.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

The pilots keep coming at ABC Family. The net – soon to be rebranded Freeform – has greenlit production on drama Famous in Love, starring Bella Thorne (Shake It Up), a “sexy, soapy tale about what it’s like to make a movie – and fall in love – in LA.” Written by I. Marlene King and Rebecca Serle, the pilot is exec produced by King (Pretty Little Liars), Dan Farah (The Shannara Chronicles) and Miguel Arteta (The Carrie Diaries), who will also direct.

NBC added five scripts to its 13-ep order for The Mysteries of Laura. The procedural starring Debra Messing, airing Wednesdays at 8p,  drew a 1.1 rating among A18-49 the third week of its sophomore run.

Grammy winner Faith Hill is teaming with OWN’s Lisa Erspamer, Sandbox Entertainment’s Jason Owen and Legendary Television for a Nashville-set daytime talker, with country star/American Idol finalist Kellie Pickler set as a host. “Kellie is smart, compassionate, funny, quick-witted and has a heart for service,” said Hill. “She possesses the ability to reach far beyond the camera and into the hearts of people, allowing you to feel immediately connected to her.”

Married With Roommates, based on a NY Times article about a young married couple who take in roommates to pay the bills, has landed at CBS. Studio for the comedy from Mike Lisbe and Nate Reger (Cougar Town) is Universal Television.

A reality show from Adam Levine, director David Dobkin (Wedding Crashers) and Renegade 83 (Naked and Afraid) landed a pilot order from NBC. The project, based on the music video for Maroon 5 hit “Sugar”, shows superfans shocked when their idols show up at a major event in their lives.

Drama Personal Motives, from ABC Studios and Ellen Pompeo’s Calamity Jane, is in development at ABC. Murder mystery written and exec produced by Andy Stern is adapted from a 2005 Spanish series.

Performers will include Tony Bennett, Garth Brooks, Alicia Keys, John Legend, Adam Levine, Carrie Underwood and Usher, among others. “By partnering with Steve Wynn and featuring Las Vegas as the backdrop, the evening will be a party the Rat Pack would be proud of,” said exec producer Ken Ehrlich of AEG Ehrlich Ventures.

Spike ordered a 13-episode season two of Ink Master: Redemption, to premiere in spring 2016. Reality competition is averaging 1.8 million viewers Tuesdays at 11p, improving the timeslot versus last year by 162 percent among A18-49.

NEW SERIES

Three survivalist couples test their outdoor skills – and their relationships –  in new Discovery series Men Women Wild, launching Wednesday, November 11 at 10p. The six-parter is told from the participants’ points of view, as they share their experiences toughing it out.

E! gave a green light to Botched By Nature, featuring the Botched docs taking their plastic surgery show on the road to help people whose looks are scarred by genetics or tragic accident. Docu-series from Evolution Media will debut in 2016. No surprise the net wanted to sew up a spin-off: the season two premiere of Botched delivered 1.6 million total viewers and 931,000 P18-49, ranking as one of Sunday’s top five destinations among W18-34..

New TV Land comedy Teachers, from improv group The Katydids, launches Tuesday, January 12 at 11p, following the return of buzzy Younger with back-to-back episodes. Teachers slips into its regular Tuesday-at-10:30p slot the following week.

DIY’s Miami Flip launches Wednesday, October 21 at 11p and 11:30p, with renovator Carolina Sullivan dealing with a kitchen snafu that’s a recipe for trouble. “I run a tight ship because one bad deal is a big deal,” says Sullivan.

FYI is thinking small. The net is expanding its Tiny House franchise with Tiny House World, debuting Saturday, November 21 at 10p. “FYI was the first network to spotlight the tiny living craze and we’re excited to now expand our successful franchise globally,” said Gena McCarthy, SVP, programming and development.

Showtime picked up Roadies to series with 10 episodes. Cameron Crowe will write, direct and exec produce the ensemble  comedy from Bad Robot Productions and Warner Bros. Television starring Luke Wilson, Carla Gugino and Imogen Poots.

CASTING

Sela Ward (CSI: NY) will star opposite Nick Nolte in Epix comedy series Graves. She replaces Susan Sarandon, whose exit was attributed to “artistic differences.”

Nick Offerman (Parks and Recreation) will guest on a November episode of Fox’s Brooklyn Nine-Nine (Sundays at 8:30p). Offerman is recurring in season two of FX’s Fargo (Mondays at 10p).

McNally Sagal (Sons of Anarchy) has joined the season two cast of ABC’s Secrets and Lies. Anthology crime drama returns in 2016.

ADVERTISING AND BRANDS

Be funny, and go live. That’s the message from the new Millward Brown AdReaction survey about multiscreen media users and advertising. Forty-five percent of respondents said they were less likely to skip an ad they thought would be funny, while live TV ads was the format most favored, with 29 percent. Throw in points or a coupon, and 33 percent of those surveyed said you’d attract their notice.

Branded videos that were not actually ads did particularly well, according to the Millward Brown report. Tutorial videos clocked a 64 percent favorable rating, and expert review videos earned 55 percent. “Now more than ever, brands have to engage influencers in genuine ways and empower these individuals to advocate on behalf of their brands,” says Zontee Hou, a strategist at Convince & Convert who will be on panel of the Cynopsis webinar, Finding Social Media Tastemakers to Boost Ratings & Brands (details here). “People want recommendations from others who share their life experiences and their interests.”

DISTRIBUTION AND CARRIAGE

Debmar-Mercury struck a four-year deal for BET to acquire all 254 episodes of Tyler Perry’s House of Payne. “We identified House of Payne as a highly compatible series for our daytime sitcom staples,” said Maureen Guthman, SVP of programming & acquisitions, BET. The series, launched with a 24-hour marathon beginning Sunday, November 1 at noon, will serve as a building block for the net’s comedy series lineup.

GLOBAL GOINGS ON

Variety game show Who’s On Top?, from Flare Media and Keshet Broadcasting, debuted on October 12 to a 27 percent rating and 39.1 percent share, the highest-rated game show launch in Israel since 2010.
