That NBC Nightly News winning streak broken by ABC World News the week of September 29? Not so broken. Revised Nielsen data, addressing a software glitch, has NBC finishing first for the week with 8.283 million total viewers versus ABC’s 8.113 million. NBC has now been tops in viewers for 265 consecutive weeks. ABC does retain bragging rights in the news demo, 2.065 million to 1.942 million. “World News Tonight is in the tightest evening news race in several years and we’re honored the viewers are responding,” said ABC.

IN THE NEWS

Turner is re-launching kids net Boomerang as a global all-animation network, programmed for family co-viewing. Anchored by cartoon classics like Tom and Jerry and Looney Tunes, Boomerang will for the first time air exclusive original content across its 13 international feeds. The refresh includes “a look and feel that conveys its quality and contemporary position,” said Gerhard Zeiler, president, Turner Broadcasting System International, as well as updated digital and mobile platforms and a new website. The official roll-out, begun last month in Latin America, takes place in the U.S. next year.

No need to worry about ABC, said Anne Sweeney during her keynote interview at MIPCOM. Linear channels are still “a great business,” the outgoing president of Disney/ABC Television Group insisted, “the key is remaining relevant.”  Goals for the company: “The first is creative excellence, the second is international growth and the third is using technology to make everything that we do better.” Sweeney is leaving the company when her contract ends in January to pursue a career in directing.

The Voice is happy with Pharrell Williams. The hitmaker, currently in his first stint as judge on the NBC singing competition, will remain onboard for season eight, with original coaches Adam Levine, Blake Shelton and Christina Aguilera. Gwen Stefani is taking Aquilera’s seat this go-round, during the “What a Girl Wants” singer’s maternity leave.

Bill Murray and his Lost in Translation director, Sofia Coppola, are reuniting for a holiday special, both told Variety. “We’re going to do it like a little movie,” said the Scrooged star. “It won’t have a format, but it’s going to have music.” Coppolla was “not sure when it will air,” but “my motivation is to hear him singing my song requests.”

Chris Rock returns to his old stomping ground to host Saturday Night Live on November 1. Rock was a cast member on the NBC sketch comedy series from 1990-1993. Musical guest: Prince.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Ed Helms’ (The Office) Pacific Electric and Universal Television have a comedy in development at CBS about an eccentric man, booted from Japan, who moves in with his sister to care for her twins. Michael Arnold (Archer) will write, exec producing with Helms and Mike Falbo.

The CW bought The Town from Oliver Goldstick, exec producer/showrunner for Pretty Little Liars. Drama project is based on a 2012 ITV miniseries. Warner Bros. Television and Big Talk produce, with Goldstick’s Russian Hill Productions.

Breakthrough Entertainment and Sudden Storm Entertainment have teamed to co-produce Miss Don’t Touch Me, a series about “fantasy, fetish and murder” (oh my!). Breakthrough will also handle worldwide distribution.

Canada’s Corus Entertainment is teaming with Burbank-based Bento Box Entertainment on a multi-year deal to create original series for Teletoon primetime programming block Teletoon at Night, debuting in 2016.

Want to find out what shows are online and when? Then you’re going to love Watcheroo, Cynopsis’ new Digital Programming Guide. Organized by show name, date, and platform, here is everything you’ll need to be caught up on digital premieres, ongoing programs, live-streamed events and integrated series.

COMING UP

Buoyed by its success with series of the Life Below Zero ilk, NatGeo greenlit three new survival shows. Remote Survival strands everyday Joes in the wilderness with an expert guiding them remotely; premiere is winter 2015. Arriving in spring 2015 are The Raft, which tosses two strangers on a you-know-what in the middle of the ocean, and The Watch, with surveillance cameras trained on “lone wolf” lighthouse keepers.

Guiliana Rancic interviews fellow breast cancer survivors Amy Robach (Good Morning America) and TV host Samantha Harris (Dancing with the Stars) on Beyond Candid with Giuliana: Hope Strength & Courage, premiering Thursday, October 16 at 8p on E!. The special also follows a breast cancer survivor who has a wish granted, courtesy of Rancic’s non-profit Fab-U-Wish.

CBC’s Heartland is about to break a record. With its 125th episode on Sunday, October 19 at 7p, the series will be the longest-running Canadian one-hour family drama on television. Heartland is licensed in over 119 countries.

CMT biography series Inside Fame profiles Grammy nominee Hunter Hayes on Saturday, November 1 at 8p. Interviews include Carrie Underwood, Lady Antebellum, Rascal Flatts and Jason Mraz.

STUDY HAUL

A new study from Viacom found that TV Everywhere is an additive experience, with 64 percent of users of TVE apps and sites reporting they watch more television overall; among Millennials, the number jumped to 72 percent. Nearly one third of respondents said they used TVE because they weren’t able to watch a show live, while 28 percent said they turned to TVE because they weren’t at home.

TV consumption habits are changing at an accelerated pace and Millennials are leading the charge, according to another new study, this one from ComScore. 18-34 year-olds surveyed for the “U.S. Total Video” report said they spend one third of their original TV series consumption on digital platforms, with 1 in 6 saying they hadn’t watched a series on a traditional TV set in the past 30 days. While older viewers tended to turn to the Internet to catch episodes they’d missed, younger viewers were more likely to proactively seek out shows online, to save money or watch fewer ads.

RETURNING SERIES

WGN America renewed Manhattan for a second season, launching in spring 2015. Period drama from Lionsgate Television, Skydance Television and Tribune Studios ends its freshman run Sunday, October 19 at 10p.
