IN THE NEWS

If Hillary can do it… Presidential hopeful Donald Trump will return to host Saturday Night Live on November 7. Trump previously hosted SNL in 2004. Sia, also returning for her second SNL outing, will be musical guest. Hillary Clinton had a cameo on this season’s SNL premiere October 3; that show was hosted by Miley Cyrus.

ABC handed new thriller Quantico a full-season order. It’s the second freshman series this fall to receive full order, following NBC’s Blindspot. ABC picked up six more episodes of the terrorism drama, which follows an elite group of FBI recruits. Season to date, Quantico ranks as Sunday’s No. 1 broadcast entertainment program in A18-49, improving the 10p hour for ABC by 46 percent.

Where’s Witchiepoo? Eccentric characters from Sid and Marty Krofft’s cult classic H.R. Pufnstuf are headed back to TV for the first time in 45 years as part of a special episode of the Kroffts’ new live-action preschool series Mutt & Stuff, on Nickelodeon. The network just ordered an additional 20 episodes of the freshman series, bringing the total to 40 for Mutt & Stuff’s first season. Production of “H.R. Pufnstuf Comes to Mutt & Stuff!,” will begin this fall with a premiere date set for early 2016. Mutt & Stuff airs weekdays at 10a.

CW supernatural drama Beauty And The Beast will end its run with the upcoming fourth season. The series received a fourth season pickup before its third season premiered this summer.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Girls creator and star Lena Dunham will be working even more closely with HBO, this time with the feminist-themed comedy Max for the network that will star Lisa Joyce (Billy & Billie). Girls executive producers Murray Miller, Jenni Konner and Ilene Landress are exec-producing with Dunham, who also will direct.

Empire co-executive producer Ingrid Escajeda and LA chef Sang Yoon won over Fox with their pitch for one-hour drama restaurant drama On The Line. The series is inspired by Yoon, but instead has a female chef protagonist who juggles the chaos of her staff, the disdain of her old-school Korean parents, and the return of her estranged ex-husband. Escajeda has an overall deal with 20th Century Fox TV.

Modern Family exec producer Danny Zuker is scoring again with a new life-imitating-art comedy, Family Show. Zuker sold ABC a workplace/family sitcom as a put pilot, the idea for which he got after a parenting incident with his own daughter. The show’s about the creators of a sitcom, following “the imperfect people who strive to be half as good as the perfect TV family they create every week for America.”

Nominations are out for the 2015 American Music Awards, set to air live from the Microsoft Theater in LA on Sunday November 22, at 8p on ABC. Taylor Swift leads the pack with six noms, followed by Ed Sheeran and the Weeknd with 5 apiece. Jennifer Lopez is onboard to host the event.

In 2014, the FBI declassified 700 pages of documents suggesting Adolf Hitler may have survived and fled to South America after the fall of Nazi Germany. History explores the theory in the new eight-part series Hunting Hitler, premiering Tuesday, November 10, at 10p. Hunting Hitler is produced by Karga Seven Pictures. Emre Sahin, Sarah Wetherbee and Kelly McPherson and History’s Jason Wolf are exec producers.

Piers Morgan is back across the pond. The erstwhile Celebrity Apprentice winner and CNN primetime host scored a gig on ITV’s Good Morning Britain, joining current host Susanna Reid.

Sundance Channel is getting a bigger beret. AMC Networks International closed a deal with French telco Orange to launch the network on Orange Cinema Series, which will greatly extend its reach in France. Sundance Channel Global already is distributed in France via SFR-Numericable and Bouygues.

BBC2 greenlit Ireland With Simon Reeve, which follows Reeve as he travels around the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland revealing how religion, history and politics have shaped its culture through the years.

FUN OF YOUR BUSINESS

Last week we asked our readers to "Tell us about your best/worst celebrity encounter."

Here’s what some of your colleagues had to say…

I brought a friend, a grown woman, to the Teen Choice Awards back when Gilmore Girls was very popular. She spotted Jared Paladecki, screamed ‘Dean!’ ran over and threw her arms around his neck. I was stunned. He was completely gracious, although a bit terrified. Tori Davis, VP, Media, New and Improved Media

Playing poker with Whoopi Goldberg. David Lau, Activation Manager, Mediavest

I literally ran into 50 Cent coming out of an elevator in NYC – I almost knocked him over, but was invited to his rooftop party that night! Lindsey Ingram, Group Media Design Leader (Media Director), Barkley

Getting photo-bombed by Jim Gaffigan at a comedy show fundraiser for the National Military Family Association, a partner of American Heroes Channel. Charlotte Bigford, Publicist, Destination America, American Heroes Channel, Investigation Discovery

Walking down 53rd street I found myself shoulder to shoulder with George Clooney. We walked 1/2 block that way. Almost at the corner a bunch of girls notice him and start pointing him out, saying ‘Oh my God.’ One yells out, ‘You’re beautiful!’ as we pass. At the corner, he looks at me, and I look back and say ‘That happens everywhere I go.’ He chuckles. Michael Lawless, VP, Director Ad Sales Operations, Katz Media Group

RATINGS

The season 6 debut of The Walking Dead came out fighting, beating out Sunday Night Football, but was a little less fearsome to its competition than the record-breaking season 5 premiere. The new debut grabbed a monstrous 14.6 million viewers on Sunday with 9.4 million A18-49, for a 7.43 ratings, according to Nielsen, but dipped 16 percent and 15 percent, respectively, from season 5.

A total of 12.17 million viewers on linear and nonlinear platforms checked in to the premiere episode of Ryan Murphy’s American Horror Story: Hotel, according to Nielsen data. On a Live+3 basis, the linear telecast posted 6.13 million A18-49 and 3.70 million A18-34, ranking No. 5 and No. 3 respectively in those demos among all new and returning series premieres on television this fall. In addition, the premiere was the second most-watched telecast in FX Networks history, behind only the premiere episode of AHS: Freak Show.

The Sept. 22 series premiere of CBS’s Limitless, which averaged a Live+SD audience of 9.86 million, jumped 79 percent to 17.6 million viewers with the inclusion of seven-day DVR playback, the unduplicated audience from an encore broadcast and 14 days of video-on-demand/online streaming. Non-linear viewership of Limitless is significantly younger: The show’s median age with online streaming is 39 and is 46 on video-on-demand.

Crime Watch Daily, the number one new show in syndication, jumped 13 percent the week ending October 4 versus the week prior, to .9, its best rating yet. Fellow newcomer FABLife was steady at .7.

Syndication’s Dr. Phil (3.1HH) was first in talkers for the seventh straight week, up 3 percent, followed by Live With Kelly & Michael (2.7), up 4 percent. The Doctors (1.0) had the biggest gain, up 25 percent.

TBS’s exclusive MLB postseason telecasts were averaging 5.3 million total viewers through Monday, tied with 2007 as the network’s most-viewed coverage on record through the third day of the Division Series. The network’s postseason coverage is up 36 percent among total viewers over last year (3,862,000 total viewers in 2014) and 44 percent among A18-49.

Hallmark Channel drew a 2.6 HH rating for the premiere of its most recent original movie, Harvest Moon, which attracted nearly 3 million total viewers. In its 9-11p time period, Harvest Moon was the highest-rated and most-watched non-sports program across demographics for the night.
