Good morning. It’s Thursday October 13, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

A new NHL season spells a new digital frontline as part of its recent ties with BAMTech, with the league offering fans more digital access points than ever as consumption experiences broaden to a wider array of devices and platforms  including live streaming, mobile app, in-venue, social media, original team content, and more. Among the new opportunities this year will be NHL.TV as it hits its first full season with the ability to watch every out-of-market game live and on demand in HD on more platforms, including the introduction of its new tvOS app for Apple TV. Meanwhile, the NHL App now stands as the official app of 25 NHL teams with new features this season allowing fans to watch two minutes of live action from every regulation period in every regular season game without blackout restrictions and access to live out-of-market games via NHL.TV.

Hockey fans attending games and other live events at participating teams’ home arenas will now have customized and comprehensive mobile app venue experiences with a brand new product called Arena. This first version will allow fans to search events with a complete calendar, buy and manage their tickets, enter with mobile tickets, get in-app notifications and promotions and order in-seat food delivery.

ON THE AIR

The Cubs’ NLDS clinching victory over the Giants handed FS1 with its most-watched telecast in the network history, nabbing an average audience of 6,368,000 viewers, according to Nielsen fast nationals. That numbers tops the previous record-holder by 7%. FOX Deportes also saw growth, scoring an average of 140,000 viewers, up 155% over last year’s Blue Jays/Rangers game. On the digital front, FOX Sports GO’s average minute audience was 115,929, which is the highest average minute audience of any authenticated event in FS GO history. Other high marks on Tuesday saw Undisputed average 125,000 viewers tying it for the most-watched live telecast in the show’s history, The Herd with Colin Cowherd record its own most-watched telecast ever on the channel with 136,000 viewers yesterday, while Garbage Time with Katie Nolan posted 582,000 viewers which is the show’s most-watched full-length telecast ever.

Ronda Rousey is heading back to the Octagon, with UFC President Dana White announcing that she will mark her return at UFC 207 on Dec. 30 in Las Vegas, fighting Amanda Nunes for the bantamweight title as the main event of the PPV. Rousey hasn’t fought since November 2015, when Holly Holm stunned the previously unbeaten champion.

ESPN re-signed sports business reporter Darren Rovell to a multi-year contract extension. Rovell will continue his role at the company, providing news and analysis of player contracts, endorsements, merchandise and memorabilia sales, event ticketing, eSports, and more.

E! debuts its new docu-series Hollywood & Football on Nov. 30 at 9p. The series “will offer a special look into life outside of the stadium for LA’s new home team, taking viewers off the gridiron and into the lives of six players for the legendary Rams.” Over the course of the season, the series will feature the following members of The “Ram-ily:” Kenny & Sabrina Britt, Rodger & Asia Saffold, Lance & Danielle Kendricks, Chase & Kila Reynolds, Bradley Marquez & Melissa Hernandez and Cory & Bianca Harkey.

In other docu news, tonight will see NBCSN debut Nitro World Games All Access at 11:30p. The eight-part television series offers an insider’s view of the event, featuring FMX, BMX, skate, inline and scooter.

In international waters, the International Surfing Association announced an international broadcast partnership with Eurosport Asia Pacific to broadcast highlights of the ISA World Championships in 2016. The will see the company carry highlights of all four ISA World Championship events this year in 47 countries as well as live event.

The NBA lined up its creative to open the new season, announcing two brand new spots: “Zeroes” featuring the Oklahoma City Thunder’s Russell Westbrook and “29” featuring the Cleveland Cavaliers’ Kyrie Irving. Meanwhile, “This Is Why We Play,” the league’s global marketing platform, returns for its second season. “Zeroes” premieres tonight during TNT’s preseason doubleheader, which begins at 8p.

The NBA is opening the doors to NBA Academies, the league’s international elite development initiative will consist of a network of elite training centers around the world to develop top international male and female prospects.  The new initiative includes educational development for the prospects with the first centers launching in China this month with the Shandong Provincial Basketball Management Center in Jinan, the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region Basketball Management Center in Urumqi, and the Zhejiang Provincial Sports Vocational Technical Institute in Hangzhou.

DIGITAL & STREAMING

Twitter is partnering with the Victoria Racing Club to stream the 2016 Emirates Melbourne Cup to an Australian and global audience, marking the first Twitter live streaming deal in sports that the company has announced outside of the US. The event begins on Oct. 31 at 11:30p. The hour-long race broadcast produced for the VRC by the Seven Network will also include 30 minutes of build-up before the race, followed by post-race commentary and analysis.

Martinsville Speedway announced plans to commit $5 million to equip the track with LED lighting, making it the first major motorsports facility to do so. The lights will begin installation following this year’s Goody’s Fast Relief 500 on October 30 and are scheduled to be in place by January 2017.

Red Bull Rampage will be streamed tomorrow at 1:30a from Utah live at Redbull.tv or on the Red Bull TV app. The event sees an elite group of 21 athletes create their own personal manmade line down the mountain without the use of power tools.
