IN THE NEWS

Fox gave a full-season order to film-to-TV reboot Lethal Weapon, for 18 episodes. The action drama is averaging a 3.0 in the A18-49 demo in Live+7 ratings, and 11.5 million total viewers across platforms. Weapon joins NBC’s This Is Us and ABC’s Designated Survivor and Speechless as freshman class members upped to full seasons.

Being Mary Jane star Gabrielle Union filed a breach of contract lawsuit against BET, claiming the net’s ordering of 10-episode fourth and fifth seasons to be shot back-to-back violates an agreement with the actress that there would be a break between seasons to allow her to take on movie roles, and deprives Union of compensation. Responded BET yesterday, “While we hold Gabrielle Union in the highest esteem, we feel strongly that we are contractually well within our rights and are committed to reaching a swift and positive resolution in this matter.”

TNT is killing Murder in the First after three seasons. The September 4 finale of the crime drama drew a season high 1.6 million viewers in Live+SD.

NBC’s Law & Order: SVU will air a topical episode on Wednesday, October 26 at 9p. “Unstoppable” stars Gary Cole as a politician whose political campaign is derailed by sordid accusations from women, though the episode was in the works before the leak of the 2005 Access Hollywood video in which Donald Trump boasts about groping women.

Speaking of, Trump spokesperson Katrina Pierson took to email Wednesday to solicit money for $140 million to pay for on-air ads to “shine a light on Crooked Hillary, her cronies and the lying liberal media.” And the frustrated media – the day before, CNN host Carol Costello shut down an interview with Pierson she said was “going nowhere” after Pierson tried to turn talk of Trump’s crude comments to Hillary Clinton and Syria.

Sixteen percent of the U.S. viewing population have multiple SVOD services in their homes, up from 10 percent three years ago, according to a new GfK report, “Over-the-Top TV 2016: A Complete Video Landscape.” And which services viewers subscribe to makes a difference to cable providers. “Our study shows that Netflix users have pay TV at roughly the same level as viewers overall – but Amazon Prime and Hulu users have lower levels of pay TV, driving down the pay TV level of viewers with a combination of Netflix and Amazon, or Netflix and Hulu,” David Tice, SVP, Consulting, Media and Entertainment at GfK, tells Cynopsis. “For pay TV providers, this shows that the competitive impact of OTT can vary notably by which service, or combination of services, are subscribed to.”

Comcast agreed to pay a $2.3 million penalty for charging customers for services and equipment they didn’t ask for, the result of an investigation the FCC started almost two years ago. Comcast attributed the issues to human error, not intentional wrongdoing, and said, “We agree those issues should be fixed and are pleased to put this behind us.”

BBC America and Fathom Events are holding a one-night theatrical screening of six-part animated series Doctor Who: The Power of the Daleks on Monday, November 14, 50 years after the original BBC broadcast, in advance of the premiere on BBCA on Saturday, November 19, at 8:25p.
