AMC is pulling the plug on most of its unscripted programming to focus on scripted content. “Scripted originals are at the core of the AMC brand,” said AMC. “In an environment of exploding content options for viewers, we have decided to make scripted programming our priority.” Which means no more Small Town Security, Freak Show or recently renewed Game of Arms; all unscripted shows in development were also scrapped. Only two left standing: Walking Dead companion show Talking Dead and Comic Book Men.
IN THE NEWS
Nielsen uncovered a software glitch that impacted broadcast and syndicated TV ratings going back to March. Revised numbers meant a dip in ABC’s premiere week A18-49 average, from 2.2 to 2.1, but its standings in primetime, news and late night held. Elsewhere, the error likely affected 98 percent of programming by less than .05 of a rating point, a small number “within statistical tolerance,” said Nielsen SVP planning policy and analysis Patricia McDonough.
Katy Perry will perform at the Super Bowl XLIX halftime show, reports Billboard and she won’t be ponying up for the privilege. The NFL was reportedly considering asking contenders to pay for the career boost of performing in front of an audience of over 100 million, but the “Firework” singer recently shot down that possibility. “I’m not the kind of girl who would pay to play the Super Bowl,” Perry said during an ESPN College Game Day appearance. Super Bowl kicks off February 1 at 6:30p on NBC.
The Shahs of Sunset strike ended with a unanimous vote from the Bravo reality show’s crew on Friday to ratify a union agreement between Ryan Seacrest Productions and the Motion Picture Editors Guild. Sixteen postproduction workers walked off the job on September 10, postponing the series’ season four premiere, originally scheduled for tonight.
21st Century Fox and Apollo Global Management completed their joint venture partnership for the world’s largest independent TV production company in a deal scheduled to close by the end of the year. Under one (figurative) roof: Endemol (Deal or No Deal), Shine Group (The Biggest Loser) and Core Media (American Idol). “The combination of these assets will create a leading global format business with a deep and diverse portfolios of products, enhanced distribution capabilities, and world-class creative talent,” said 21st CEO Chase Carey. Endemol CEO Just Spee and Shine CEO Alex Mahon will step down in 2015, after an extended transition period.
ABC really likes them. Newbies How to Get Away with Murder and Black-ish got full season orders from the net, after taking first and second place in the ratings among all new shows. Murder is limited to 15 eps, thanks to star Viola Davis’ deal, while Black-ish has the full 22.
CBS summer series Unforgettable will not make it to season four. It’s the second cancellation for the Sony Pictures Television show, which got the axe after its freshman run only to be picked up by the net again for a summer slot. The crime drama’s season three finale on September 14 earned a 1.1 rating among A18-49.
The top 40 cable channels have lost more than 3 percent of their distribution over the last four years, according to a Wall Street Journal analysis of Nielsen ratings data. How to account for the decline, which exceeds the loss of subscribers? Pay-TV customers are signing up for less expensive bundles with fewer channels, says the WSJ. “What we are seeing is some cord cutting and some cord shaving,” Nielsen global president Stephen Hasker told the paper. “Consumer time and attention is shifting.”
A+E Networks is launching A+E Studios International, a banner under which the company will distribute and finance quality scripted series, TV events and movies, at MIPCOM. “Last year, A+E Networks announced the formation of A+E Studios to allow our company to take greater control of the scripted content commissioned for our domestic channels, History, A&E and Lifetime,” said Sean Cohan, EVP, international for A+E Networks. “The industry knows us as a source for high-end factual programming. Now that we have ownership over these premium dramas, TV events and movies, it made sense to package and market our scripted content under a new umbrella brand.”

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
Former NBC entertainment president Warren Littlefield struck a first-look deal with Legendary Television and Digital Media to develop projects for television as well as digital and emerging platforms. “Warren is one of the few former broadcast network president who has successfully made the transition from executive to producer,” said Bruce Rosenblum, president of Legendary and Digital. “We are thrilled to be in business with him.” Littlefield’s Fargo, renewed for season two on FX, took home this year’s Emmy for best miniseries.
A+E Studios signed a three-year, first look development with Carlton Cuse (Bates Motel), its first overall production deal with a creator/writer-producer. “Since the start of A+E Studios, it has been our intention to expand our collaboration with Carlton,” said Barry Jossen, EVP.“We know he is one of the few producers with the unique combination of creativity and skills to personally create, as well as nurture other writers.”
Lions and tigers and…zombies? Animal Planet has acquired the rights for zombie animal graphic novel “The Other Dead” for development into a scripted series. “Zombie animal meets Animal Planet?” said Other Dead creator Joshua Ortega. “Sounds like we have some serious undead fun ahead of us.”
An anthology series inspired by Hispanic folklore, from Andrea Newman (Chicago Fire), Eva Longoria’s UnbeliEVAble Entertainment and Universal Television, has been put in development by NBC. The supernatural thriller is set in the Southwest.
Gaumont TV France announced plans to produce Spy City, an English language drama series focusing on the spy game in early 1960s Berlin, co-produced by Odeon in Germany.
Among the offerings at MIPCOM: Peace Point Rights is presenting Nemo Planet Inc. reality music competition Birth of a Band, featuring Genesis’ Mike Rutherford. The series will also be available as a format.
A reboot of Lost in Space (1965-1968) has been put in development by Legendary Television, reports Deadline. Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless (Dracula Untold) will write, and exec produce with Kevin Burns of Synthesis Entertainment, holder or rights to the original.
COMING UP

Tonight’s Celebrity Crime Files on TV One focuses on boxing greats who ended up facing jail time. The episode “reminds viewers of how invasive the constant spotlight is on athletes in their personal and professional lives, especially when viewed through the lens of criminal activity,” D’Angela Proctor, TV One SVP programming and production, tells Cynopsis. “We interview these previous boxing legends and those closest to them to get the full spectrum of the events leading up to and after their arrests.” “Contenders to Offenders” airs at 10p.
Celebrity chef Danny Boome (Recipe Rehab) is taking a season two of Good Food America on the road. The Z Living (formerly Veria Living) series premieres with the new host Sunday, October 19 at 9p, with Boone crossing the country in search of the best organic, sustainable restaurants.
FUTURE TV
With the Cynopsis Future TV Summit just three days away, we asked speaker Stephen David, president of Stephen David Entertainment, to weigh in on the next big thing in documentaries:
“It’s always hard to say what the next ‘trend’ will be, but I think if you look at what audiences are really responding to – the docs that are pulling in the ratings – you’ll see that, more than anything else, viewers respond to great characters. Documentary and nonfiction is no different than fully scripted television in that respect – people get invested in strong personalities.
“Having said that, I think that we’re going to see content creators start to explore new storytelling opportunities through the evolving technological landscape. People consume content everywhere, and when they are actually sitting down to watch TV at home, they’re frequently doing it with another screen in their lap. Now, that could be seen as a distraction… but I think as content creators, we’ve actually been given a great opportunity to be truly innovative and immersive.”
