IN THE NEWS
Billy Bush, suspended from Today after the 2005 Access Hollywood video surfaced that included a crude conversation between Bush and Donald Trump, may be gone for good. After the morning show’s exec producer, Noah Oppenheimer, noted in a memo on Sunday that “there is simply no excuse for Billy’s language and behavior on that tape,” CNN yesterday quoted a source saying, “He will never be on the show again.” Bush released an apology on Friday admitting he was “embarrassed and ashamed.”
Trump supporter Scott Baio (Charles in Charge) fanned the flames over the Access Hollywood video during an appearance on Fox News’ Justice with Judge Jeanine. “Ladies out there, this is what guys talk about when you’re not around. So if you’re offended by it, grow up,” said Baio. “Take it easy with your phony outrage…. It’s not a big thing.” Baio, who spoke at the Republican National Convention in July, took heat over the summer for appearing to call Hillary Clinton the c-word on Twitter.
Nancy O’Dell, one of the women Trump spoke about in vulgar terms on the video, would beg to differ with Baio. O’Dell hosted Entertainment Tonight last night and said, “There is no room for objectification of women, or anyone for that matter – not even in the locker room.”
Nominations for the American Music Awards were announced on Good Morning America on Monday. Drake leads the pack with 13 nods, an AMA record, Rihanna was nominated for 7 awards, and Adele and Justin Bieber scored 5 each. Show airs live on ABC Sunday, November 20 at 8p.
NFL ratings are down double digits this season, but MoffattNathanson analyst Michael Nathanson advised investors “not to read too much into a month of data.” While acknowledging that there are “real risks” to companies betting heavily on NFL ratings, Nathanson pointed to election coverage and less-than-exciting games as possible causes for the dip.
Westwood One is partnering with Jerry Springer, adding the talk show host’s Tales, Tunes and Tomfoolery weekly podcast to its podcast on-demand platform. “I have admired Westwood One’s success in the broadcasting industry for years. So to have them now as a partner with my podcast is not only exciting but also a great business opportunity,” said Springer. (For info and insights on the podcasting boom, keep an eye out for details on an upcoming Cynopsis webinar.)
Today, National Coming Out Day, Logo is censoring LGBT content during a marathon of RuPaul’s Drag Race. The effort is a show of solidarity with LGBT people living in countries where such images are blocked entirely and where coming out is not safe or legal. Logo will also showcase facts about international LGBT equality throughout the day. The censored marathon of season 8 starts at 6a.
CBS Corp. and Viacom are gearing up for a possible merger, according to the Wall Street Journal. Viacom has Morgan Stanley exploring a recombining, while CBS hired White & Case lawyer Morton Pierce (named “Mergers and Acquisitions MVP of the Year” in 2015 by Law360) as legal counsel. The companies, which split ten years ago, were asked to consider merging by Sumner Redstone holding company National Amusements.
Spike TV’s Ink Master, now in season 8, airs its 100th episode tonight at 10p. One of the secrets of the tattoo competition’s longevity is not relying on the same old, same old. The show’s exec producer, Original Media co-president and co-CEO Glenda Hersh, tells Cynopsis, “In addition to the exceptional work highlighted in each episode, the changes in show creative from season-to-season have become a trademark of Ink Master, contributing to the growth of its fan base and ratings.”
Fusion and All Def Digital announced a multi-year deal for a series of comedy roasts produced by ADD. The franchise will kick off on election night, November 8 at 9p. All Def Comedy Roasts builds on an alliance between ADD and Fusion that includes Fusion’s acquisition last year of rights to broadcast the All Def Movie Awards.
