Good morning. It’s Tuesday October 11, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
A new study by PricewaterhouseCoopers projects that media rights will officially pass ticket gate revenues as the biggest revenue driver in the industry by 2018. The research, from PwC’s new “At the Gate and Beyond” report, sees rights for broadcast, cable, Internet and mobile properties hitting $19.9 billion by 2018 to best revenue from live gate revenue ($19.8 billion) as well as sponsorships ($17.5 billion) in that time frame. The company also sees strong consumer and advertiser engagement with live game telecasts to keep rights in demand with both traditional platforms as well as digital partners. Meanwhile, sponsorship revenues are projected to increase at a compound annual rate of 3.9%, from an estimated $15.5 billion in 2015 to a projected $18.7 billion in 2020.
