Rentrak struck a deal to acquire the TV measurement business of WPP’s Kantar Media for $98 million. “Clients will benefit from our focus on respondent-level media and purchase data,” said Kantar CEO Eric Salama. What does it mean for the industry? The sale “confirms that massively scaled direct measurement data (of viewing and consumer behaviors) is the future of TV advertising,” said Dave Morgan, CEO of Simulmedia.

Rentrak also announced an agreement for WPP’s GroupM to use its national and local TV measurement services. Nielsen’s response: “Our accredited, census-based methodology remains the gold standard for TV audience measurement. We continue to collaborate with our clients to ensure that the solutions we deliver reflect the realities of the market.”

IN THE NEWS

NBC hoped to land The Daily Show’s Jon Stewart as anchor for Meet the Press before giving Chuck Todd the spot in September, reports New York Magazine. “They were ready to back the Brink’s truck up,” a source told the mag. Tweeted Todd after the story broke: “If it’s Sunday, it’s your moment of zen.”

The Paley Center for Media appointed ten new members to its Board of Trustees: Brandon Burgess, Chairman and CEO, ION Media Networks; Nancy Dubuc, President and CEO, A+E Television Networks; David Eun, Executive Vice President, Open Innovation Center, Samsung Electronics; Randy Falco, President and CEO, Univision Communications; Peter Liguori, President and CEO, Tribune Media Company; Robert D. WE tv is working the second screen with the introduction of WE-D, the first-ever TV series application of 360-degrees technology allowing viewers to see alternate views of series in real time via their mobile devices. While watching on linear TV, viewers are prompted to open the WE tv app on their mobile device so WE-D can sync with the show. The experience launched last night with Braxton Family Values. “Allowing viewers to actively engage with our content through new technology provides a unique and exciting new perspective, driving deeper engagement with our characters and shows,” said net president Marc Juris.

Stephen Collins, in the midst of fallout from alleged child molestation, was cut from an upcoming episode of ABC drama Scandal. The 7th Heaven star tweeted in September that he’d taped an episode of the Shonda Rimes drama; the net now says “We will not be airing any footage with Stephen Collins.”

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Vanilla Ice Goes Amish is back for season two Saturday at 10p on DIY, but the rapper/renovator’s mission to learn the art of hand craftsmanship isn’t the last we’ll see of the simple-living sect. “The Amish continue to be a fascinating subculture for viewers,” Robert Horowitz, Juma Entertainment president tells Cynopsis. “The cooperation our DIY Scripps crews have received from the Amish community in Ohio has led to a spinoff series we currently have in production.”

Q&A

With just three days to go before the Cynopsis Future TV Summit, speaker Eric Solomon, Nielsen SVP, global audience measurement, shares his insights about one of the media industry’s hottest topics: TV ratings today … and tomorrow.

What has had the biggest impact on TV measurement in the last five years?
Audience fragmentation. It was just about five years ago that the iPad was first introduced. We have seen absolutely explosive adoption of tablets and smartphones in that time, the arrival of Smart TVs, an increasing penetration of over-the-top services such as Netflix, all added to the already crowded TV and computer based arena. With this type of fragmentation across viewing mode (live versus on demand/time shifted), content type (TV/video, radio/audio, and static/text), device type (TV/computer/smartphone/tablet), delivery type (traditional TV, browser, app) and advertising model (traditional/mass media or digital/targeted), it has become critical to move toward big data/census-style measurement. And in that world, the quality of underlying probability panels for correction and calibration of big data takes on added importance.

What’s the most exciting tool Nielsen has when it comes to TV measurement?
The big data platform we have developed this year for measuring digital content and advertising is our “killer app.” It allows us to include smartphones and tablets in our measurements, sets the stage for inclusion of viewing from Smart TVs and TV connected devices, and sets us up for a digital future. In terms of what is in development, without getting into specifics I’m very excited about the potential to bring together the best of the content identification and recognition tools from Nielsen and Arbitron (audio watermarking and metering) and bring them to bear globally and across digital and traditional content.

BRANDS AND ADVERTISING

SundanceTV is partnering with Allstate for season two of Dream School. In addition to in-show integrations, an original vignette series and marketing elements, the deal includes the formation of the Dream School Good Hands Fund, a mentoring and scholarship program. Dream School: NYC airs Wednesdays at 10p.

First Mad Men, now this: FremantleMedia has teamed up with TBWA to produce sitcom format Buy This, about a fictional ad agency working on briefs from real-life clients. The brands take an active role in the storyline, with a content platform that will enable them to communicate with real audiences. A version of the show launched in September on Finnish channel MTV earned a 22 percent share of A15-24. “It’s the concept that markets have been waiting for for a long time,” said Stinde Mäkinen, commercial director at MTV Media, “one where you can produce high quality TV content with the advertiser’s message embedded.”

Glock has signed on as sponsor for Designing Spaces spin-off, Designing Spaces of Hope: Military Makeover on Lifetime. The three-ep series will chronicle the renovation of the home of a wounded Purple Heart recipient, and feature the firearms manufacturer in a segment on the importance of safety and how to handle and store firearms.
