IN THE NEWS

Filming in Savannah, GA for season 2 of WGN America’s Underground was canceled for Thursday and today amid concern about Hurricane Matthew. Shooting is scheduled to resume on Monday. Also postponed is ESPN’s LSU-Florida football game, which had been scheduled for Saturday in Gainesville, FL.

Dr. Phil McGraw is TV’s top-paid host, according to Forbes Magazine, raking in $88 million in pre-tax earnings between June 2015-2016. And that was before Bull, the CBS drama based on McGraw’s early career as a trial consultant, for which he holds creator and executive producer credits, got off to a strong start. Ellen DeGeneres was runner-up, with $75 million, while Ryan Seacrest placed third, with $55 million.

They’re with her: An ad directed by Lee Daniels, co-creator of Empire, features several of the Fox drama’s cast members. The pro-Hillary Clinton spot (“There’s only one person in this race who said Black Lives Matter”) aired during the show Wednesday night.

The Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers and its global arm, the International Society of Broadband Experts, announced the creation of an Internet of Things Working Group within the SCTE/ISBE Standards Group. “Even as it opens the door to new business opportunities, the massive number of Internet of Things devices that are being connected to our networks present unique reliability and security requirements,” said Chris Bastian, SVP and CTO of SCTE/ISBE. “Our new IoT working group is intended to bring together network operators and vendors to determine how best to standardize and operationalize these new services.”

The Nonfiction Producers Association, founded in 2014, has broadened its criteria for membership, establishing three tiers of participation for production companies and producers, now based on company size and volume of work, as well as adding a new “Associate” class of membership for vendors and service providers to the industry. The changes were made to “make it easier for more segments of the business to join, including emerging talent with new skill sets and fresh points of view,” said NPA GM John Ford.
