The Washington State Gambling Commission made its position clear to Valve, formally notifying the company that it must immediately end the transfer of skins for gambling activities through the company’s Steam Platform, which saw CS:GO Lounge bring in approximately $1 billion in “skin” gambling alone between January-August, according to the report.

“In Washington, and everywhere else in the United States, skins betting on eSports remains a large, unregulated black market for gambling,” said Washington State Gambling Commissioner Chris Stearns. “And that carries great risk for the players who remain wholly unprotected in an unregulated environment. We are also required to pay attention to and investigate the risk of underage gambling which is especially heightened in the eSports world. It is our sincere hope that Valve will not only comply but also take proactive steps to work with the Commission on future measures that will benefit the public and protect consumers.”

COMPETITION & TOURNAMENTS


The Overwatch Open reaped nearly 180 million gross minutes of video consumption for ELeague and FACEIT across TBS and Twitch, with Twitch generating 7.4 million live video streams for the event as Misfits bested Team EnVyUs to claim the prize. The Grand Finals on TBS reached 2.6 million total viewers on the network on Friday, including a 47% rise among Men 18-34 compared with the same telecast window over the previous month. On social media, the tournament generated five million social impressions on Twitter and Facebook during weeklong coverage of the event.

The British eSports Association detailed its goals and strategy for the new not-for-profit organization, stating five key areas of focus for the outfit: fund and support grassroots eSports; establish best practices; deliver courses and qualifications; increase awareness of eSports; and provide expertise and advice. The British eSports Association is targeting a launch of its full website by Dec. 6th. “We are on a mission to promote the positive qualities of eSports and reinforce it as a credible activity,” said Chester King, Acting CEO. “eSports delivers important life and cyber skills, which all children should have the opportunity to develop”.

FACEIT is teaming up with the Capcom Pro Tour and Fandango Club, the event organizers of Milan Games Week – to produce the two-day EU Regional Finals of Street Fighter V. After an open 256 player EU Regional Last Chance Qualifier on Day One, the top two players will enter into the EU Regional Finals the next day, battling the 14 players who have qualified by winning the EU Regional Ranking Events that have taken place throughout the year. “It’s great to have a CPT event returning to Milan Games Week for the second year in a row,” said James Bardolph, Creative Director of FACEIT Media. “The Day One Open EU Regional Ranking Event will be an exciting chance to see up-and-coming talent challenge legendary players in the scene. I’m looking forward to some heated matches between dedicated competitors and the passionate Street Fighter V fans cheering them on the whole way.”

Valve’s Dota 2 is hitting Massachusetts with The Boston Major starting Dec. 7. Sixteen teams will compete for a $3 million prize pool at Wang Theater with open qualifiers running Oct. 23-26 and regional qualifiers spanning Oct. 27-30.

The Esports Championship Series unveiled the winners of the Community Caster Challenge, described as a new project that gives amateur eSports commentators a shot to perform at a professional venue. Commentators were selected from hundreds of applicants to cast live ECS matches beside the FACEIT professional team at the IMG studios in London during the main season. Selected Casters include: Joshua “Dowsey” Dowsev; Jack Evans; William Robert Dallas III; and Jamie “SwitchBladeJay” Martin.

Music producer/DJ/Dim Mak Records founder Steve Aoki is buying in to the eSports scene, announcing at TwitchCon that he has invested in Overwatch and Counter-Strike team Rogue. "As many of my fans know, I’ve been a gamer all my life and have been getting more and more involved in eSports,” he said, per ESPN. “I can finally take my love for gaming to the next level as an owner of Rogue, the professional eSports team. As an avid player of Overwatch, their dominance caught my eye and after getting to know them, I realized that we shared the same goals and interests in team building and competition.” Meanwhile, Riot Games Oceania announced that Australian investment group Guinevere Capital picked up a majority stake of League of Legends eSports team, Dire Wolves .

German sports league the DFL is planning to go all in on gaming, filing a slate of trademarks surrounding eSports with marks that include "DFL Esport Bundesliga", "DFL Virtuelle Bundesliga" and "eBundesliga."

NRG is getting into the Rocket League, bringing Kings of Urban into the family to compete. “Welcome @Fireburner_ @Sadjuni0r and @RL_Jacob to the family as the new NRG Rocket League team! #NRGRL,” NRG posted on Twitter.

The marketing partnership also includes branding integration during Worlds and ASE broadcasts, and unique experience opportunities will also be offered to avid gamers. “Acer is committed to pushing boundaries in the gaming arena and has built a strong reputation with its widely acclaimed Predator line of gaming notebooks, desktops and displays, consistently delivering new, relevant technology to the market,” said Vincent Lin, senior director, Global Product Marketing and Planning at Acer. “This sponsorship for the 2016 League of Legends World Championships and 2016 League of Legends All-Star Event, two of the world’s most popular and exciting eSports events, will help Acer demonstrate its gaming prowess to gaming enthusiasts around the globe.”

Lots of game activation at New York Comic-Con this weekend. Square Enix announced experiences for titles that include: Deus Ex: Mankind Divided; Dragon Quest Builder; Final Fantasy XV; Final Fantasy XII:The Zodiac Age; Hitman; Rise of the Tomb Raider and more. The company is launching a  #PrizeOfTheTombRaider Contest as part of the festivities that gives fans a show to win a Tomb Raider Jeep Wrangler which will be suspended from a skyscraper at 52nd and Broadway in Times Square. The Square Enix Members team will also be on the show floor running sweepstakes throughout the entire show for exclusive Square Enix Members Rewards.

Meanwhile, Capcom counters at NY Comic-Con with offerings that include a VR demo for Resident Evil 7 in its North American debut,  along with demos of Dead Rising 4 and Street Fighter V, which will offer peeks at the upcoming Halloween costumes along with a themed stage.

Betway Sportsbook signed on to sponsor Ninjas in Pyjamas. The deal includes on-shirt branding, content usage rights, onsite branding at the NiP gaming house and full player access, according to the release. Betway’s Anthony Werkman said: ""We have put a special focus on our eSports offering over the past few years by launching the first eSports specific microsite and content channels. Our agreement with NiP is yet another first and cements our position as the world’s leading eSports bookmaker."

Meanwhile, Radiant ESports announced a deal with Royal Knives with activation set to include giveaways and discounts for followers.

PLATFORMS


Xbox unveiled Arena on Xbox Live with the pilot title Killer Instinct. During Preview, players can compete in daily Killer Instinct tournaments across Xbox One and the Xbox app (beta) on Windows 10 PC. During the initial roll out period, the platform will only be accessible to Preview members through practice tournaments on Xbox One in the US with plans to add additional features and expand to the broader Preview audience later in October.

Meanwhile, Microsoft also announced that Bing is going big for eSports, where users who search Bing for the likes of “league of legends 2016” or “lol worlds 2016” will get information on when matches will take place, group standings and how different teams are ranking within their group. In addition, fans can click over on the ‘Matches’ tab to see the matches the team is scheduled to play while Bing’s predictions for matches will be indicated by a blue label next to the team predicted to win and its likelihood. The 2016 League of Legends World Championships, which are going on now until October 29, will be the first event that Bing will cover.

Twitch is boosting its eSports engagement with the introduction of its own in-game digital currency, dubbed Stream+ that would debut with the launch of Amazon’s new brawler game Breakaway and “integrate directly” within the Twitch platform. The company announced its plans at TwitchCon, noting that the currency would act as a “a loyalty points system where players can earn points by watching streams” that could later be spent on “polls and wagering.” Meanwhile, TwitchCon also saw announcements that included: Twitch Prime, a new set of Amazon Prime benefits created for gamers; clips on mobile; Transcodes; Curse Voice and Twitch integration and more.

Most streamed gaming categories for the week ending Oct. 2, per Gamoloco, with championships driving numbers for League of Legends, CS:GO and DOTA 2.

INDUSTRY

It was a big week in VR with first contact for Sony’s entry via the PlayStation while Google unveiled its own plans in the space. Juniper Research released its projections for the VR hardware market anticipating the industry to top $50 billion by 2021. "This rapid growth will arise from a widespread adoption of VR by smartphone users, and the high unit prices commanded by headsets for PCs and consoles," the report said. "The market will be triggered by the launch of PlayStation VR this October, and Microsoft’s Project Scorpio in 2017 – offering compatibility with the Oculus Rift."

Google’s VR entry (not counting cardboard) will be called Daydream View, with the headset set to be paired with the company’s new Pixel phone. Described by the company as a device that “lets you explore new worlds, kick back in your personal VR cinema, and play games that put you at the center of action” the headset is made from a lightweight, breathable fabric for users and will be out next month.

Ubisoft continued to fend off overtures from Vivendi, filling two openings on its board of directors with its preferred members. In addition, company CEO Yves Guillemot and his brother Gerard, CEO of Ubisoft Motion Pictures, saw their own board seats get renewed. "Today during our Annual General Meeting, Ubisoft shareholders expressed massive support for Ubisoft’s strategy and management," said the company in a statement. "We remain focused on the execution of our strategic roadmap, which has already proven successful and which we are confident will continue to deliver great results and value for all of Ubisoft’s stakeholders."

POWER PLAYERS: Neil Duffy of Collegiate StarLeague

As the eSports scene on college campuses continue to get more organized, the Collegiate StarLeague made a major move to grow the space last month, announcing an exclusive partnership with Riot Games to present the 2017 uLoL Campus Series, where CSL will run the tournaments, overseeing critical logistics that include registration, scheduling, qualification, production and broadcasting the upcoming season. The events add to the organization’s slate for the 2016-17 season, with players now able to enter college-level tournaments for titles that include StarCraft 2, League of Legends, Dota 2, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and Vainglory throughout September for cash and scholarship prizes. Play begins next week with registration already topping 675 schools, over 1000 teams and 25,000+ registered gamers.

Cynopsis eSports & Gaming spoke with Neil Duffy, Vice President, College Network & Business Development at WorldGaming – parent company of College StarLeague  about the evolution of eSports at universities, the organization’s media plans and what to expect this year.

Duffy on the evolution of collegiate eSports: When I first joined, there wasn’t even a collegiate eSports scholarship program, then the guys at Robert Morris announced that they were going to award scholarships for League of Legends and created a massive stir. That was groundbreaking because campuses always had small pockets of gamers but they were never formalized into clubs in the way they are now with social chairs, presidents, leadership, etc. The dynamic has shifted that past two or three years.

On growth: It’s been a big summer for us. While we are still in the registration phase right now, we are just shy of 700 campuses and we are going to be approaching 30,000 students. Signing this deal with Riot Games just legitimizes our place within the collegiate ecosystem.

On new elements this season: In addition to adding VainGlory, which is a first for us because it is a mobile title, we’re also looking to get into console gaming this winter. We haven’t announced the titles but you can expect titles for PlayStation and Xbox.

On media deals: That is actually one of the most exciting discussions for us right now. People think that there is a great market for our content and there have been some big media properties that have reached out to us over the last few months. Right now, we are looking to choose the right one and build programming that will be compelling and goes beyond the boundaries of just eSports.

Zynga named Gerard Griffin as its new CFO. He had previously served as Sr. VP of Finance at EA, and takes over for interim CFO Michelle Quejado.

Virtus.pro is tapping Roman Dvoryankin as GM of the organization’s eSports teams. He had previously run marketing for ice hockey franchise HC Spartak Moscow.
