FX renewed American Horror Story for a seventh season. The session six premiere of AHS: Roanoke last month was the third most-watched telecast in FX Networks history  after the debuts of AHS: Freak Show and AHS: Hotel. “Each new installment is a cultural event, hotly anticipated for its theme, imagery cast and twists,” said FX Networks CEO John Landgraf. Season seven begins in 2017.

He liked it! Simon Cowell, creator of the Got Talent format and judge this past season for the American version, has signed on for three more years. He’ll be joined again by Mel B, Heidi Klum and Howie Mandel for season 12, arriving in summer 2017. Its last go-round, Talent was number one among all summer series in A18-49 and total viewers, with its highest average in the demo in three years and most-watched season in five. Cowell will also continue as exec producer.

In advance of event series MARS, Nat Geo is bringing an immersive activation to the streets of NYC  the corner of Canal and Varick, to be exact. “Experience Mars” recruits will step into the year 2033 and be challenged to follow in the Martian pioneers footsteps, via a cable robot virtual reality simulator and more, from October 26-29. Series launches Monday, November 14 at 9p.

PRODUCTION AND DEVELOPMENT

A Burglar’s Guide to the City landed a put pilot commitment from CBS. Action procedural comes from Scorpion exec producers Alex Kurtzman, Justin Lin and Heather Kadin and co-exec producer Paul Grellong; studio is CBS Television Studios.

Acorn Media Enterprises has joined forces with All3Media International and the BBC for Closer to the Enemy, centered on a WWII intelligence officer played by Jim Sturgess. The period drama will premiere on Acorn TV and the BBC in late 2016.

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

Smithsonian’s Polar Bear Town focuses on Churchill, Manitoba, aka “The Polar Bear Capital of the World,” where over 1000 beasts collide with curious tourists during their annual migration. Six-parter bows Wednesday, November 16 at 8p.

Contractor Mike Holmes (Holmes Makes it Right) is at it again on Holmes: Buy it Right, teaching potential buyers how to size up a house before plunking down their hard-earned cash. “Every house tells a story, it’s my job to read it,” says Holmes, whose new show launches Tuesday, November 1 at 10p and 10:30p.

WGN America’s Appalachia drama Outsiders is back for season two on Tuesday, January 24. The announcement was made ahead of the cast’s appearance at New York Comic Con on Sunday, October 9.

Upcoming USA thriller Shooter is now scheduled to premiere on Tuesday, November 15 at 10p. Original debut dates in July were changed after real-life shooters killed police officers.

Marvel’s Iron Fist is set to debut on Netflix on March 17. The superhero series centers on billionaire by day, martial arts master by night Danny Rand. Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events, starring Neil Patrick Harris, gets an earlier debut on the streaming service: January 13.

COMING UP

NBC’s Late Night with Seth Meyers will make its first foray outside NYC’s Studio 8G to broadcast next week’s shows from Washington, D.C.’s Warner Theatre. Guests will include Vice President Joe Biden, Kevin Hart, Lena Dunham, Jake Tapper, Senator Al Franken, Secretary of Defense Carter, among others. But probably not Donald Trump, of whom Myers said Monday night, “I think you pretend to be rich, but you’ve been going town to town for 18 months selling cheap hats.”

Bravo’s third annual The Real Housewives Awards on BravoTV.com takes an election twist with categories like “Secretary of Shade” and “Speaker of the Housewives.” A special Watch What Happens Live on Monday, November 7 at 11p will cover the fan-voted awards.

Destination America’s month-long “Ghostober” event includes specials like The Exorcist File – Haunted Boy (Wednesday, October 12 at 10p) to accompany ongoing series including Haunted Case Files (Sundays at 10p), Ghostly Encounters (Mondays at 10) and Ghost Mine (Thursdays at 9p and 10p), among others, along with live webcams at the haunted Poe House and Penn Museum. Stunt culminates with Paranormal Lockdown: The Black Monk House on Monday, October 31 at 9p.

One-hour documentary Prescription for Change: Ending America’s Opioid Crisis airs Tuesday, October 11 at 9p on MTV. The first entry in the new MTV Docs unit features an interview with President Obama.

getTV goes for blue collar comedy with the additions of The Jeff Foxworthy Show and The Bill Engvall Show to its lineup. The shows will air every Tuesday starting October 11, with three episodes of Foxworthy starting at 8p, followed by three episodes of Engvall at 9:30p.

DISTRIBUTION

Viacom networks to be carried on AT&T’s upcoming DirecTV Now streaming service include Nickelodeon, Comedy Central, MTV, BET, VH1, Spike, CMT, TV Land, Nick at Nite, Nick Jr., Viva and Logo. “The diversity of content makes Viacom Networks’ programming a great fit,” said AT&T chief content officer Dan York. AT&T has also recently struck carriage deals with NBCUniversal, Discovery Communications, Turner, Scripps Networks and A+E Networks.

GLOBAL GOINGS ON

Rive Gauche Television sold factual series Droned to Viasat for its feeds in Eastern Europe, Scandinavia and Africa, and to New Zealand’s TVNZ. TV2 Hungary picked up Fix It & Finish It, Where Cool Came From and Wineroads, while Discovery Netherlands took the Buying series and Mediaset Spain picked up a package featuring The Day I Almost Died,My Strange Addiction, My Crazy Obsession and Evil Twins, among other deals.

ADVERTISING

It’s not just about 30-second spots for sponsors of tomorrow night’s Latin American Music Awards on Telemundo. The Aflac duck will arrive on the purple carpet with the names of the winners (among other duties), Comcast Xfinity’s X1 voice activated remote control will be seen in nominees’ and presenters’ hands and a  Domino’s pizza will be featured on-air. “When it comes to spinning live events into marketing and social media gold,” said Mike Rosen, EVP of Ad Sales, News and Hispanic Groups, NBCUni, “Telemundo truly shines.” Show time is 8p, simulcast on NBCUniverso.

RATINGS

The season 42 premiere of NBC’s Saturday Night Live was up 31 percent versus last season’s opener, with 8.3 million viewers, the best debut in eight years. Margot Robbie was host, The Weeknd was musical guest and Alec Baldwin, of course, was Donald Trump.

Science Channel boasts double-digit gains in 3Q16 among A25-54 (up 10 percent), Total Viewers (11 percent) and W25-54 (14 percent), as well as M25-54 (up 7 percent) during Total Day versus 3Q15 in L+3. In September, Science delivered primetime gains among A25-54 (7 percent) with lifts among M25-54 (5 percent), W25-54 (9 percent) and Total Viewers (7 percent) versus September 2015.

HGTV ranked as the number one cable network in the third quarter among viewers P25-54 for Total Day impressions for the first time ever. The network also ranked as the top cable net in impressions among W25-54 for all key dayparts, including Total Day, Prime and Weekend. Throughout the quarter, more than 22 million total viewers tuned in to HGTV each week during primetime.

New NBC drama Timeless debuted Monday with a 1.8 rating among A18-49, hanging onto a healthy chunk of its The Voice (3.0/10) lead-in, but down from Blindspot’s 3.1 bow in the slot last year. ABC’s new Conviction drew a .9 in the demo; Castle averaged 1.1 in the timeslot last season.

Food Network’s Halloween Wars scared up a .8 rating among A25-54 (750,000 IMP) on Sunday, and ranked number 2 in the 9p timeslot across all cable.The show tied for number 4 in the timeslot among A18-34 with a .5 rating (250,000 IMP), and a special Halloween themed episode of Guy’s Grocery Games at 8p earned a .6 A25-54 (540,000 IMP), ranking #7 in its timeslot.

Entertainment Tonight, up 17 percent from the week before, had its best showing since the February sweep the week of September 19.Access Hollywood, up 14 percent, rebounded sharply from a decline the prior week.Extra was up 8 percent for a 13-week high while The Insider rose 10 percent for its strongest number in four weeks.

The premiere of HBO’s Westworld on Sunday drew 1.96 million viewers and .8 among A18-49. Add in HBO Go and HBO Now, and the number of viewers climbs to 3.3 million. The same night, the two-hour season finale of AMC’s Fear the Walking Dead delivered 3.4 million viewers and 2 million in the demo in Live+SD numbers.

With the presidential election becoming America’s favorite sport, football isn’t scoring like it used to. According to CivicScience research conducted for SportsBusiness Daily, NBC’s Sunday Night Football is down 10 percent, Thursday night NFL games have dipped 15 percent and ESPN’s Monday Night Football is down 19 percent so far this season.

3Q16 was five-year-old Velocity’s best 3Q Primetime ever among P25-54, P/M18-49, P18-34, M18+, HH and Persons 2+ while extending Velocity’s growth streak to 16 year-over-year primetime quarters in P25-54, P2+ and HH. Velocity also scored its best September, earning its highest delivery ever for M18-49, M25-54, P2+ and HH, as well as its best Total Day ratings and delivery ever for M18-49.

Telemundo ranked as the number one Spanish-language network during Monday-Friday 7p-11p primetime among A18-49 for the second consecutive month in September. The net averaged 847,000 A18-49 during the month.

Hallmark Channel crowned itself the number one cable network in primetime on Saturday thanks to original movie Love on a Limb, the first in the net’s “Fall Harvest” seasonal movie franchise. Limb was the most-watched and highest-rated show among HH (2.2) and total viewers (2.3 million) in the 9p-11p time period. Sister net Hallmark Movies & Mysteries on Sunday saw The Irresistible Blueberry Farm become its most-watched program among HH ever.

Univision’s La Banda had its third consecutive week of growth among A18-49, up 3 percent week to week (to 731,000) and up 36 percent versus its premiere telecast.

ABC World News Tonight was the number one evening newscast in total viewers the week of September 26, winning the first two weeks of the season for the first time in 17 years.

Fox Business Network’s Making Money with Charles Payne drew 126,000 viewers for the week, besting CNBC’s Mad Money with Jim Cramer (109,000) for the first time ever.

Paul Buccieri has been promoted to President, A+E Studios & A+E Networks Portfolio Group. In the new role, Buccieri will be responsible for A+E Studios and for leveraging the synergies across the A+E Networks brand portfolio. “The growth of A+E Studios is a major priority for us as content ownership and capabilities are vital for our future growth,” said Nancy Dubuc, President and CEO of A+E Networks. As part of a new organizational structure for the division, promotions also went to Evan Scheffel, now Executive Vice President, the Americas, Television Distribution; Kristen Finney, upped to Executive Vice President, EMEA, Television Distribution, and Richard Samuels, promoted to Executive Vice President, Asia Pacific, Television Distribution.
