IN THE NEWS
Two months’ worth of rain fell Saturday night in Cannes, host to Mipcom this week. While service is getting back to normal, several events have been modified or suspended due to severe flooding. “The whole MIP team, the Palais staff and our Cannes partners are working non-stop to limit the disruption caused by this exceptional situation,” said Laurine Garaude, director of Reed Midem’s TV division, on Sunday.
CBS is picking up a second season of Zoo. The drama joins new one-hour comic thriller BrainDead and Big Brother on the net’s 2016 summer slate.
ABC bumped the Tuesday, October 6 premiere of Beyond the Tank to next week, to make room for an encore of episode two of Live+3 hit Quantico. The freshman drama had a 62 percent lift from its 1.9 rating among A18-49 in Live+SD. Total premiere viewership after three days: almost 16 million.
Don’t blame cord-cutters for the over 600,000 dropped pay-TV customers in 2Q15, says Evercore ISI analyst Vijay Jayant, who points to business distractions as a major culprit. Comcast was dropping its bid for Time Warner Cable, Charter Communications was in the midst of its TWC deal, AT&T and DirecTV were crossing the t’s on their agreement and Dish was preoccupied with the launch of OTT service Sling TV, Jayant pointed out in a note to investors. Expect a rebound in the third quarter, added Jayant, “beyond typical seasonality.”
Cablevision and Verizon settled a legal battle that started in January, when Cablevision filed a lawsuit accusing Verizon of making deceptive claims in ads about its Wi-Fi service, then slammed Verizon’s FiOS service. Now, apparently, everyone’s a winner. “Cablevision and Verizon have resolved their disputes to both parties’ satisfaction,” said the companies on Friday.
Abby Huntsman has joined Fox News as a reporter. The conservative journalist had been co-host of MSNBC’s The Cycle, canceled in July.
ABC Family canceled Chasing Life after two seasons. The drama’s finale hit a series low 486,000 viewers.
The BBC is courting a younger set with a Doctor Who spinoff. Set in contemporary London, Class is being written by young adult author Patrick Ness. “This is growing up in modern Britain,” said Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffatt, “but with monsters!”
So what’s behind TCM programming event “Trailblazing Women,” a multi-year initiative created to raise awareness about the historical contributions of women working behind the camera? “Startling statistics from Women in Film Los Angeles show that only six percent of directors working today are women,” says Jennifer Dorian, GM of the net. “Additionally, only 15 percent of writers working in film are women, 20 percent of editors are women and scarcely 2 percent of cinematographers are female.” For its month-long event in October, hosted by actress, producer and director Illeana Douglas, the programming slate centers on female directors. “I hope TCM’s Trailblazing Women can help raise the volume on the conversation and help bring change in the industry,” says Dorian.“The drumbeat is getting louder.”
Relativity Media’s TV assets were sold to a group of creditors for $125 million; a hearing to approve the bid takes place today in U.S. Bankruptcy Court. Relativity Television produces unscripted series including Guy’s Grocery Games and The Great Food Truck Race, among others.
Gabrielle Carteris topped Patricia Richardson to win another two-year term as SAG-AFTRA EVP. Clyde Kusatsu was elected the union’s national VP, LA.
