Good morning. It’s Monday October 3, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Volume: Volume refers to how much traffic (i.e., page views and impressions) a website has garnered over a specific time period.
Amazon Prime members just got a new benefit: An ad-free version of Twitch. And the live video-streaming site, which is owned by Amazon, will also allow Prime subs free access to one paid Twitch channel per month, as well as access to digital games, free same-day game delivery, and other perks. The new program is called Twitch Prime. The new features were announced at TwitchCon, the site’s gamer-friendly annual event. One other notable announcement: Twitch will begin allowing users to upload videos. It’s a major new addition to the site, which up till now has been focused on live-streaming.
Like its subsidiary Instagram, Facebook is taking some inspiration from Snapchat. Specifically, Facebook Messenger is out with a new feature that allows users to tack stickers and filters onto shared videos and photos. Oh, and said videos and photos disappear after 24 hours. TechCrunch was the first to report the new feature. Facebook told the publication that this is just a “small test.” They’re not kidding: At the moment, it’s only available in Poland.

Dentsu Aegis Network has opened up a new research and development center focused on creating and implementing new uses of data. Called the Dentsu Aegis Network Global Data Innovation Centre, the unit will serve as Dentsu’s hub for technologists and data scientists. Dentsu says that it hopes the Innovation Centre will shore up its digital efforts and revenue, especially when it comes to video, mobile, and programmatic. “Dentsu Aegis Network Global Data Innovation Centre allows us to hone data literate talent that will lead to a competitive advantage for our clients,” said Nick Waters, CEO of Dentsu Aegis Network Asia Pacific, in a statement. The center will be based in Singapore.

PROGRAMMING + CONTENT ACQUISITIONS
As Netflix has focused on an original content-centric strategy, it’s also declined to forge as many new licensing deals (and allowed old ones to lapse). The result: The streaming giant’s content library has shrunk by more than half since 2012, from about 11,000 titles to about 5,300 titles. It was the streaming blog Exstreamist that crunched the numbers, in part by referring to uNoGS, a site that tracks Netflix data. It’s not as if Netflix is pursuing a less expensive strategy, of course; its budget for 2016 is $6 billion. Bottom line: Original content is mega-expensive, and Netflix can’t pursue it if it’s also maintaining all of its costly licensing deals. And anyway, the service has made the bet that licensed movies and TV shows aren’t its main ticket to customer growth.
VIRTUAL + AUGMENTED REALITY
With cheaper options like the Samsung Gear VR on the shelves, high-end hardware-makers are going to have to set themselves apart. That’s why HTC, maker of the $799 Vive headset, just launched its own VR app store. Called Viveport, the store features both cinematic VR experiences and games.
DIGITAL COPYRIGHT LAW
Sometimes piracy gets punished – severely. Just ask William Kyle Morarity, a California man who illegally shared The Revenant and The Peanuts Movie online after stealing copies of the films while working on the 20th Century Fox studio lot. As part of his sentence for felony copyright infringement, a federal judge has ordered Morarity to pay $1.12 million in restitution. That’s in addition to eight months of house arrest and 24 months of probation. Don’t steal copyrighted material from a major movie studio, kids. Especially if you’re their employee.
According to a study from SurveyMonkey Intelligence, the three-month-old live-streaming app Live.ly now boasts 4.6 million monthly active users on Apple’s iOS. That places Live.ly ahead of Twitter’s Periscope, which has 4.3 million monthly iOS users. Created by Musical.ly, the video app is geared toward teenage girls. It just launched for the Android operating system last month, and already has 1.2 million users. With a little more time to grow its Android user base, it’s likely that Livel.ly will soon become the most popular stand-alone live-streaming app.
