Fox is pulling reality show Utopia from its Tuesday sked. Encores of Family Guy, The Simpsons and Bob’s Burgers will fill the hole until October 14; the World Series takes up the following two Tuesdays, then a new season of MasterChef Junior launches November 4, shuttled from Friday, November 7. Utopia will continue in its Friday slot; Fox’s original plan was for the ratings-challenges social experiment to move to a Tuesday-only schedule.

IN THE NEWS

Netflix is financing four films developed by Adam Sandler’s Happy Madison Productions and starring the SNL alum, to air exclusively on the streaming service. Said Sandler, whose films have grossed over $3 billion, “When these fine people came to me with an offer to make four movies for them, I immediately said yes, for  one reason and one reason only…Netflix rhymes with Wet Chicks. Let the streaming begin!”

HBO, Tom Hanks and Starbucks are teaming for The Concert for Valor, a live, A-list-studded (Bruce Springsteen, Rihanna, Meryl Streep to name a few) event to air Veterans Day, November 11 at 7p, from the National Mall in Washington, D.C. And you don’t have to be an HBO subscriber to tune in  the channel will provide its signal free to non-subscribers, as it did for the inaugural celebration for President Obama in 2009. “We are honored to play a small role to help raise awareness and support for our service men and women,” said HBO chairman and CEO Richard Plepler.

Homeland premieres with Showtime Sync, a companion viewing experience for iPad, iPhone and smart TV users that allows users to share clips directly to social media platforms during episodes, the first time an app has made immediate clip sharing available from smart TVs. Season four of the drama premieres with back-to-back eps Sunday, October 5 at 9p.

Univision launches its most comprehensive “Education Week” on Saturday, October 4. The signature of the Univision Contigo empowerment platform, programming will run across Univision television, radio and digital properties to help parents discover how they can support their children in the shift of educational standards across the country, and prepare their children to apply for, enter and complete higher education.

Real Housewives of New Jersey star Joe Giudice was sentenced to 41 months in prison on Thursday, and ordered to pay $414,000 in restitution; housewife Teresa was sentenced to 15 months. In March, Guidice and Teresa changed not guilty pleas for conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud and bankruptcy fraud to guilty.

FourthWall Media announced that the U.S. Patent office has approved a patent for its Velox bandwidth management and optimization technologies: Network Bandwidth Regulation Using Traffic Scheduling.Velox makes second-by-second data collection possible on the full range of set-top boxes deployed by US cable operators. “FourthWall’s MassiveData division has been delivering second-by-second viewership data for all channels from millions of cable set-top boxes,” said Dr. Louis Slothouber, chief scientist and co-founder of FourthWall. “Velox makes this possible. It leapfrogs some of the existing cable bandwidth management technologies, including our own HyperGate service, in both performance and adjustability.”

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

TV Land ordered to series Impastor, about a gambling, pot-smoking slacker on the run from a loan shark, and Teachers, based on the web series, about educators who refuse to read fairytales because “sometimes Prince Charming wants to date other people.” Both “are perfect examples of the type of comedies we’re looking for as TV Land evolves its original series – innovative, unconventional, and hilariously funny for an audience that enjoys smart humor with a hint of heart,” said net president Larry W. Jones. Series premiere in 2015.

NBC gave a script commitment plus penalty to workplace comedy Wendy and Peter, from Le Train Train and Warner Bros. Television. Marisa Coughlan will write as well as exec produce with Le Train’s Rashida Jones and Will McCormack.

COMING UP

Discovery’s upcoming Edge of Alaska explores a remote refuge for “people who don’t want to be found.” Docu-series from Twofour America debuts Friday, October 24 at 10p.

Darren Star (Sex and the City) comedy Younger premieres on TV Land Tuesday, January 13 at 10p. Sutton Foster (Bunheads) stars as a 40-year-old trying to pass as 26 to jump start her career.

CBS Daytime game shows The Price Is Right and Let’s Make a Deal will recognize Breast Cancer Awareness Week with themed shows today and Tuesday, October 14, respectively. Studio audiences will include cancer fighters, survivors and their supporters; prizes on Deal will include pink items like jewelry and a scooter.

Oxygen is launching a reality competition that tests physical stamina as well as artistic skills. Street Art Throwdown tasks contestants with creating art in hard-to-reach locations and harsh conditions, for a $100,000 grand prize. Series from Embassy Row, part of the net’s “very real” rebrand, debuts Tuesday, February 3 at 9p.

Great American Country taps into Boomer nostalgia for upcoming docu-series A Very Barry Branson, following Barry Williams as he launches a 70s-era variety show in Branson, MO. Best known as big brother Greg on The Brady Bunch (1969-1974), Williams performs covers of songs from the likes of the Eagles, Neil Diamond and John Denver in the show, set to premiere in 2015.

The Royals, E!’s first stab at a scripted series, will premiere in March. Elizabeth Hurley (Bedazzled) stars in the soapy drama from Lionsgate about a fictional royal family.

RETURNING SERIES

USA is bringing back Satisfaction for a season two, after the drama averaged 2.2 million viewers in Live+7 ratings for its freshman run. The net passed on giving medical drama Rush a sophomore shot.

Sea Rescue and The Wildlife Docs have been renewed for the 2014 and 2015 seasons of Litton’s Weekend Adventure, airing nationwide on ABC affiliates. The 2014 season kicks off on Saturday, October 4 with new eps.

Season two of Black Sails launches on Starz Saturday, January 24 at 9p. The drama’s premiere drew 2.6 million Live+Same Day viewers during the weekend of January 25-26.

DISTRIBUTION AND CARRIAGE

Peace Point Rights’ Mipcom 2014 slate includes documentaries Escape or Die!, MMA series Hard Knocks “Out of the Cage” and Gone South: How Canada Invented Hollywood. Lifestyle highlights: Food Truck Face off and Season 2 of Colin and Justin’s Cabin Pressure.

Peacock Alley Entertainment has original new series Illusions of Grandeur packed for Mipcom.Series star magician Zack Mirza will be on hand.

Following MGM’s acquisition of majority interest in Roma Downey, Mark Burnett and Hearst Entertainment’s One Three Media and LightWorkers Media, now under the new joint venture United Artists Media Group, MGM International Television Distribution will be launching sales of A.D., a miniseries produced by UAMG, at MIPCOM. A.D. premieres on NBC in 2015.

GRB Entertainment sold two OWN series to African broadcaster MNET: drama The Haves and the Have Nots and comedy Love Thy Neighbor.

Tricon Films & Television is heading to Mipcom with factual and lifestyle series including Living with the Jacksons, Custom Built, The Expandables, Flip Addict and Dining INNvation.

HAPPY NEWS

Sapna Vyas, scripted development executive at Lifetime, and Gaurav Misra, co-owner and president of Brian Graden Media, were married Friday, August 22 before 350 guests at Lincoln Park in Chicago. The reception was held at the Fairmont Chicago, Millennium Park. The newlyweds will honeymoon in The Maldives later this year.

Jaime Paxton Morey, vice president of development at RIVR Media, welcomed a healthy baby boy on October 1. Isaac “Ike” Arthur Morey weighed in at 10lbs, 7oz and was 22 inches long.

RATINGS

USA was the top ad supported cable entertainment net for the ninth consecutive third quarter in 3Q14 among P18-49 (886,000) and P25-54 (935,000), and also ranked number one in P18-34 (426,000) for the quarter.

ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live had its biggest-ever premiere week audience (2.9 million), jumping 19 percent in total viewers versus premiere week 2013. The late nighter also grew for the second straight year in A18-49 (872,000) to its strongest opening-week performance since 2007.

Good Morning America won premiere week across all key target demos: total viewers (5.68 million), A25-54 (2.17 million) and A18-49 (1.52 million), according to Nielsen.It’s the ABC morning show’s third consecutive premiere week win in total viewers and A25-54.

CBS This Morning had the biggest gain in total viewers among the three network morning broadcasts, up five percent for the week ending September 26.

The seven-hour broadcast of American Graduate Day 2014, from WNET and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting on Saturday, attracted a record number of stations and partners. National carriage rose from 73 percent of households in 2013 to 84 percent, and the event was seen in 29 of the top 30 Nielsen markets.

CBS had a happy hump day. Survivor started Wednesday night tops in viewers (9.47 million) and A18-49 (2.4/9). Criminal Minds premiered as Wednesday’s most-watched program with 11.5 million viewers, up 2 percent from last year, and the series premiere of Stalker at 10p won its time period in viewers (9.1 million) and A18-49 (2.0/6), retaining 95 percent of its audience in the demo in its second half hour.

Debbie Macomber’s Cedar Cove averaged a 2.5 HH rating and 436,000 W25-54 on Saturday, making it number one in its time period in the demo with 3 days of time shifted viewing included, reports the net. Eleven weeks into season two, the show is averaging a 2.3 HH rating, with 426,000 W25-54 and 2.3 million total viewers, making it number one in ratings and delivery among households, total viewers, and W25-54 in the time period on a Live+3 basis.

Wednesday’s premiere of AMC zombie drama The Walking Dead scared up the highest A18-49 premiere ratings for MyNetworkTV in six years. Ratings in the timeslot grew 67 percent versus the May 2014 premiere of Law & Order: Criminal Intent and 150 percent versus the September 2013 bow of Numbers.

Sportsman boasted year-to-year growth of 86 percent among M25-54 in 3Q14. It was the outdoor lifestyle programming net’s best ratings quarter ever, spurred by the delivery of a higher East Coast and West Coast prime time average audience than in any previous quarter in M25-54, Adults 25-54 and M18-49.
