IN THE NEWS

Shawn “Jay Z” Carter inked a two-year, exclusive first-look deal with The Weinstein Company to generate movies as well as scripted and unscripted TV. Jay Z, who has his own multimedia company Roc Nation, was a producer on the Jamie Foxx remake of Annie, co-producer on Top Five and EP on Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby. “I’m excited to tell stories from real-life prophets, whom through their struggles have changed the world for the better, and others whose stories are filled with fantasy and delight,” Jay Z said in a statement.

Terence Winter, who has written and executive produced The Sopranos, Boardwalk Empire and Vinyl, is collaborating with HBO, again. He’s been tapped to write and EP the upcoming HBO film about Griselda Blanco, the drug lord known as “The Cocaine Godmother” who revolutionized the U.S. drug trade during the 1970s and 1980s. The film, now in development, will star Jennifer Lopez.

Speechless and Designated Survivor have been given full-season pickups by ABC. Channing Dungey, President, ABC Entertainment, announced the news in a statement, noting that both “are two of the most critically acclaimed new shows of the fall season.”

ABC cut its episode order for midseason comedy Imaginary Mary from 13 episodes to 9. Series stars Jenna Elfman as a single career woman whose furry make-believe friend from childhood, voiced by Rachel Dratch, pops back into her life. No premiere date has been scheduled.

CBS Daytime is commemorating 30 years at #1 with a variety of celebrations throughout the year. Talent from its five award-winning series, Let’s Make A Deal, The Price Is Right, The Young and the Restless, The Bold and the Beautiful and The Talk, will begin appearing on each other’s shows. Things kick off on Monday, October 10 at 11a, when The Price Is Right features The Talk’s Julie Chen and Sharon Osbourne, Peter Bergman, Joshua Morrow and Jason Thompson from The Young and the Restless; Pierson Fode, Katherine Kelly Lang and Heather Tom from The Bold and the Beautiful; and Tiffany Coyne and Jonathan Mangum from Let’s Make A Deal.

Nielsen is rolling out digital content ratings starting today. It makes available the daily measurement of audience across digital sites, including text and video ratings.  This information isn’t explicitly being released to the media and will only be available in full syndication for clients. However, some of it will likely come out. The new ratings are based on Nielsen’s census data platform, SDKs and Cloud API and will measure all connected devices from game consoles to Rokus to mobile devices like smartphones and tablets. Client participants include Mashable, Vice, Buzzfeed and Discovery.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Animal Planet renewed Dr. Jeff: Rocky Mountain Vet for a third season. The show is the network’s top-performing series to date, averaging 1.3 million total viewers per episode.

The CW teamed with producer Greg Berlanti on Casa, a drama from Warner Bros TV and Berlanti’s own Berlanti Productions that touches on a front-and-center topic: immigration. The project focuses on six siblings in a Hispanic family who must band together when their parents are unjustly deported.

ABC nabbed a political family comedy from black-ish creator Kenya Barris and co-EP Vijal Patel. Felicity Huffman will headline the potential series, which explores how today’s “politics of division” plays out between a husband and wife who are opposing pundits. Should the project go to series, it is not expected to impact Huffman’s ability to star in another season of American Crime.

ABC made a put pilot commitment to The Escape, a family comedy about three generations of men. The project centers on a stressed-out urban professional who uproots himself and his troubled 19-year-old son to move to Idaho to live with his father, a retired surgeon with the ruggedness of Indiana Jones.

MGM Television secured the television rights to Margaret Atwood’s The Heart Goes Last. It’s the second collaboration between the studio and the author, following their partnership on The Handmaid’s Tale. The Heart Goes Last tells the story of a young urban couple hit by job loss and bankruptcy, who are forced to live in their third-hand Honda. “To partner again with such an astounding author and amazing icon is a testament to MGM Television’s goal to producing high quality and bold entertainment programming,” said Steve Stark, MGM’s President, Television Development and Production.

Sir Ben Kingsley and John Cho face off when Lip Sync Battle kicks off Season 3 on Wednesday, October 12 at 9p (new day and timeslot). Additional stars scheduled to appear on the Spike series this season include Lupita Nyong’o, Don Cheadle, Wanda Sykes, Uzo Aduba, and Craig Ferguson.

Ayesha Curry brings family and friends together to celebrate as she cooks up her favorite recipes in Ayesha’s Homemade. New series bows Saturday, October 22 at 12p on Food Network.

The Royals returns Sunday, December 4 at 10p on E! New season picks up two weeks after the execution of King Simon’s murderer, Ted Pryce, the former head of the Royal Family’s security.

Velvet debuts on UniMas on Tuesday, October 4 at 8p. Series is set in the fashion world of Spain in the 1960s.

Fuse is set to debut new series Clash of the Corps live on EP Dwayne Johnson’s official Facebook page on Tuesday, October 4 at 10p.
