Fox is counting its Sunday blessings. The Simpsons had its best premiere number in three years, up 34 percent from its last season opener, averaging 3.9/11 among A18-49 and 8.5 million total viewers. An hour-long Family Guy, with a Simpsons crossover, had a 73 percent boost from its year ago debut, to 4.5/12, with 8.4 million total viewers.

Actor/producer/former White House official Kal Penn (How I Met Your Mother) will serve as a special correspondent for Fusion’s midterm election coverage. With live, Sunday-through-Thursday program Midterm Mayhem: The Ultimate Political Smackdown, Penn said, “We’re hoping to offer some smart, engaging, and entertaining reporting without obsessing over the lowest common denominator.”

The International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees filed Unfair Labor Practices charges against Bravo with the National Labor Relations Board, Deadline reported Monday. Bravo, after taking over production of season four of Shahs of Sunset Friday, axed striking post production editors that had held up the reality show’s season launch. “The right to organize, including the right to strike, is enshrined in federal law,” said IATSE Local 700 organizer Rob Callahan. “The Editors Guild and IATSE will aggressively defend the rights of our membership against all such violations.”

Fusion is teaming with the PEN American Center to establish the "PEN/Fusion Emerging Writers Prize," recognizing a promising young writer of an unpublished non-fiction work that addresses a global or multicultural issue. For details, go here.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Annabel Oakes (Awkward) has half hour comedy In Security, from Sony Pictures Television, set up at NBC. Hollywood Reporter said Oakes will write and exec produce with Phill Trail (Enlisted).

They really like her. Jenna Elfman (Dharma and Greg) signed a development deal with 20th Century Fox Television. “She is both a brilliant comedic leading lady and a stunning dramatic actress; she quite frankly can do everything,” said Sharon Klein, EVP of casting. “Audiences love her and so do we, as our relationship spans from Dharma all the way to 1600 Penn.”

ABC Family ordered supernatural drama Stitchers to series. “Stitchers is new ground for us and I’m excited to bring procedurals to the network,” said net president Tom Ascheim. ABC Family also ordered a second helping of Young & Hungry, basic cable’s top telecast in its time period among A18-34, and W18-34, but passed on a second run for Mystery Girls.

The Dovekeepers, from exec producers Roma Downey and Mark Burnett (The Bible), as commenced production in Malta for broadcast in 2015. The four-hour event series based on the historical novel by Alice Hoffman, a co-production between CBS Television Studios and LightWorkers Media, is the first project from CBS Entertainment and CBS Television Studios’ Limited Series and Event Programming unit.

CBS issued a script commitment for If We’re Not Married by 30, a Warner Bros. Television comedy co-exec produced and co-written by actress Melissa Rauch (The Big Bang Theory’s Bernadette) and her husband Winston Rauch, says the Hollywood Reporter.

COMING UP

Psychological drama Fortitude premieres on Pivot in January 2015. Stanley Tucci (The Lovely Bones) and Michael Gambon (Harry Potter) star in the Fifty Fathoms production.

Inserted in the season finale of Oxygen’s Sisterhood of Hip Hop, tonight at 9p, is a sneak preview of cast member Siya’s new music video, “Real MVP.” At show’s end, viewers can catch the entire video on Oxygen.com. The docu-series also debuted music videos for cast members Nyemiah Supreme and Brianna Perry over the course of the season

Animal Planet’s Pit Bulls & Parolees, returning for a sixth season Saturday, October 4 at 10p, will have its first after-show event at 11p, featuring intrepid dog rescuer Tia Torres. “Our viewers not only want to know more about Tia’s work, they want to know about her as a person. So we thought we’d connect Tia and her fans,” exec producer Lisa Lucas tells Cynopsis. “And since we’ve noticed fans love to post pictures of their pit bulls, we’re giving owners a chance to show off their pit bulls live on-air.” Fans can share their best pics using #ShowUsYourPits on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

A Smithsonian Channel two-parter explores a medieval city abandoned to the jungle 600 years ago. Angkor Revealed: The Hidden Megacity airs Sunday, October 5 at 8p, followed the next week in the timeslot by Angkor Revealed: Death of an Empire.

Outdoor Channel’s just-launched fall programming slate includes two new series: Fight to Survive (Saturdays at 1:30p) and The Gunfather (Wednesdays at 8p). “Outdoor Channel immerses its viewers in attention-grabbing TV about men and women and their exhilarating quests to follow their passions. And this quarter is no exception,” said Jeffrey Wayne, EVP of Programming.

AXS TV promises “no stone left unturned” when Dan Rather grills KISS’s Gene Simmons tonight at 8p on The Big Interview. Simmons’ newest book, ME INC., is due out this fall.

RETURNING SERIES

Alpha House is back for a sophomore run on Amazon Friday, October 24. Among the many guests popping up on the Garry Trudeau political comedy: Today’s Matt Lauer and Savannah Guthrie, former Presidential advisor David Axelrod, Good Morning America’s George Stephanopoulos and U.S. Senators John McCain and Elizabeth Warren.

CASTING

Supermodel Naomi Campbell (The Face) landed a recurring role in Fox midseason drama Empire, from Lee Daniels, Danny Strong and Brian Grazer.

Live with Kelly and Michael co-host Michael Strahan announced he’ll hit the big screen with an appearance in sequel Magic Mike XXL, coming out in July 2015. Channing Tatum issued an invite to the former NFL star during a visit on the talk show last year. Said Strahan on Monday’s show, “I’m about to do something that started as a joke.”

Jon Hamm (Mad Men) will co-star in a special holiday episode of UK anthology series Black Mirror, on Channel 4. Hamm counts himself “a massive fan of the show.” Oona Chaplin (Game of Thrones) is also onboard.

Samantha Morton (Miss Julie), John Hurt (The Elephant Man) and Tahar Rahim (A Prophet) will head the cast of The Last Panthers. The six-ep crime drama was ordered by UK’s BSkyB and France’s Canal Plus.

NBCUniversal announced the launch of NBCUx, a programmatic digital advertising sales offering. NBCUx offers a combination of data-enabled targeting alongside digital display, mobile and video content across NBCU’s entertainment, news, sports and Hispanic digital properties. Target is among the first major brands to utilize NBCUx; NBCU said nearly 20 percent of its business is already being done programmatically.

Marriott International launched an in-house global content studio, for digital and filmed content across film, television, online, digital and print platforms. “While content is just part of the overall travel experience we provide, we believe Marriott can become the world’s leading publisher of travel lifestyle content for the next generation,” said David Beebe, VP, creative + content marketing, global marketing. “Our goal is to produce engaging content that builds communities of people passionate about travel that will drive commerce.”

DISTRIBUTION AND CARRIAGE

Scripps Networks International announced its new Program Sales and Distribution division will introduce 1,200 hours of content at MIPCOM from across the company’s portfolio of networks including Food Network, HGTV and Travel Channel. Among the lifestyle and travel offerings: Bite This with Nadia G, Mega Mansions and Hotel Amazon.

Tricon announced the international launch of IFC comedy Garfunkel and Oates at Mipcom. Tricon is also exclusive worldwide distributor of the net’s Maron, The Spoils of Babylon, The Birthday Boys and Comedy Bang! Bang!.

Andy Weir has launched television distribution company Twin Bridge Media, representing content from independent producers.Weir most recently served as SVP, content distribution for U.S. Hispanic broadcaster Estrella TV.

RATINGS

The season four premiere of ABC’s Once Upon a Time on Sunday earned the series its highest numbers in two years, with 9.3 million viewers and 3.4/10 A18-49, according to fast affiliate Live+Same Day data, outperforming its year-ago premiere by 9 percent in total viewers and 31 percent in the demo.

With the caveat that ratings are subject to change due to live programming, CBS reports Madame Secretary was the most-watched program of Sunday night, with 12.99 million viewers (1.4/4 among A18-49). The good news for The Good Wife: an average 11.2 million viewers, up 22 percent versus last year (1.3/4 A18-49).

The season two finale of Ray Donovan was the Showtime crime drama’s highest-rated episode and scored the biggest total night ratings ever. Drawing 2 million viewers at 9p, the ep outperformed the season two premiere by 61 percent; in total night, its 2.52 million viewers was a 43 percent lift.

Two episodes into season five on Sunday, Downton Abbey averaged 8.1 million viewers on ITV, down from 9.5 million for the episode the season prior.

During its second season premiere week, Lauren Lake’s Paternity Court boasts it experienced the most year-to-year growth of all court shows, growing 33 percent in HH ratings (to 1.48 versus 1.11).

Friday A18-49 Analysis: ABC won the most A18-49 viewers Friday with 1.8/7, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen. ABC topped 8p with 1.8/7 for the first hour of Shark Tank, followed by 1.3/5 for Univision’s Mi Corazon Es Tuyo. Shark Tank kept the lead at 9p with 2.1/8, versus 1.3/5 for CBS’s Hawaii Five-0 and NBC’s Dateline. ABC was still in the lead at 10p with 1.6.6 for 20/20; NBC’s Dateline was close behind with 1.5/6.
