RESEARCH
A comprehensive report on video streaming, released Tuesday, challenges the presumption that people are fleeing TV for online video. Requiem for a Stream: The Relationship Between TV Brands and Video Streaming, the final chapter in a three-part series compiled by the Video Advertising Bureau (VAB) using verified third party data, reveals that:
·
A small percentage of the heaviest TV viewers do the overwhelming majority of streaming and their activity is lifting the time and attention people devote to TV programs. The reason: TV programs represent the core of video streaming.
·
TV viewing far exceeds time spent with streaming platforms and mobile devices, and 87 percent of that viewing is live in part aided by the increasing desire to engage with others about TV programs on social networks.
·
Only 6 percent of people do 87 percent of streaming.
·
Streamers watch more TV than non-streamers, and the heaviest streamers spend dramatically more time watching TV, averaging more than four hours of TV vs. 22 minutes of streaming per day.
