ADVERTISING
Close to 100,000 media professionals. Hundreds of seminars and workshops across four days and 15 venues. All this can mean only one thing…Advertising Week is here. Taking place in New York City through Sept. 30, the 13th annual Advertising Week focuses on the industry’s most important topics, from innovations in technology to creative storytelling and data. Rod Granger caught up with Matt Scheckner, CEO, Advertising Week and Stillwell Partners, for a snapshot of the week.
Cynopsis: How has the event evolved since it launched?
Scheckner: This is the 13th edition here in New York City and the 18th global edition, overall. Looking back to 2004 when we began, the dominant variable is the rise and “Mainstreaming” of digital and the growth of the thought leadership agenda, on the whole.
Cynopsis: What are some of the highlights that people should be looking for this year?
Scheckner: The Town Hall “Super Sessions” which are all new for this year, will be outstanding, with such industry leaders as Snapchat’s Imran Khan; Oscar winning filmmaker Paul Haggis; Facebook’s Sheryl Sandberg on stage with GM Chair and CEO Mary Barra; P&G CMO Marc Pritchard; FOX & the NFL with Joe Buck and Michael Strahan; Arianna Huffington on stage with Mark Cuban, and many more leading luminaries.
Cynopsis: What advice/tips would you give to first time attendees to take full advantage of the event?
Scheckner: The challenge is navigating quality and quantity …. There are about 270 seminars to choose from. Go beyond your core competency or areas of interest; it’s a tremendous learning opportunity.
According to a study from IPG Media Lab, Forbes and Syracuse University’s Newhouse School, branded content leads to 59% higher recall than other digital advertising, including native and display ads. The study also found that consumers are 14% more likely to search for more content from a company after an impression of branded content. Finally, the study found that branded content is only improving; in fact, there’s been a 17% improvement in brand recall as compared to a 2013 study. You can take a look at the full study here. And to learn more about how to produce the kind of branded content advertisers are looking for, check out the October 20 Cynopsis webinar: http://www.cynopsis.com/webinar/produce-branded-content-advertisers-need-now
DIGITAL DATA
AT&T’s soon-to-launch virtual-MVPD service, DirecTV Now, is set to become the company’s dominant video service in the next three to five years, unseating AT&T U-verse and the DirecTV satellite service, reports Bloomberg, citing sources close to the development of the service. The predictions came this week as AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson told a Goldman Sachs investor conference in New York that the service is on track to launch by the end of 2016 with more than 100 channels, initially targeting the approximate 20 million Americans who don’t pony up for pay-TV.
CBSN, CBS News’ 24/7 digital streaming news service, and Instagram have teamed to feature curated Instagram stories in CBSN’s live streaming coverage for the presidential and vice presidential debates. As part of the partnership, Instagram Stories created by CBSN anchors and CBS News correspondents and contributors, including Nancy Cordes, Vladimir Duthiers, Major Garrett, Reena Ninan, Will Rahn and Bob Schieffer, will be integrated into CBSN’s anchored coverage before and after each debate, along with stories from political experts and voters across the country. CBSN will also curate questions from voters to inform coverage of the debates.
Showtime is giving viewers the chance to watch the Season 7 premiere of Shameless across multiple platforms ahead of its linear premiere on Sunday, October 2 at 9p. The episode is available to view for free via YouTube, SHO.com, iTunes and SVOD platforms.
