CYNOPSISSPORTS
09.25.15

Good morning. It’s Friday September 25, 2015, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

Time Inc. continues to expand SI’s imprint by launching Sports Illustrated Films, described as “an original programming enterprise and interactive digital platform that will draw on a network of filmmakers, producers and journalists, both within Time Inc. and beyond, to create SI-branded video programming for digital, TV and OTT distribution.” The launch begins with a duo of films on a new digital channel, SI.com/films with the company locking in agreements with Mandalay Sports Media and Velocity to produce a slate of programming under the banner. Six projects will be released in 2015, beginning with Brett Favre: Life After the Game, which profiles NFL Legend Brett Favre, along with The Rise and Fall of the Danbury Trashers, about a minor league hockey team owned by Connecticut Waste Management king Jimmy Galante.

ON THE AIR

Sports may be the best defense against cord-cutting, according to a new survey by Frank N. Magid Associates. The report, commissioned for ONE World Sports, found that, among consumers who have cut the pay-TV cord within the last two years, 39% listed sports channels as a reason to plug back in. Additionally, nine out of 10 (88%) sports fans say they watch sports on a television set, with broadcast networks leading the way at 73% of respondents, followed by cable sports networks (62%) and general entertainment networks (60%). Still, 37% of all sports fans now watch sports streamed online “often,” “Sports remains the most DVR-proof form of video content,” said Alexander “Sandy” Brown, President and CEO of ONE World Sports. “The excitement, immediacy and community around sports contests demand live viewing, whether that viewing takes place via an antenna, or a pay-TV provider, or via a live web stream. Whatever the format, the findings support that people want to watch sports live, and on the best  typically largest and most crisp  available screen.”

Meanwhile, the NFL on FOX reports that it is off to its second-best start ever, anchored by America’s Game of the Week. This past Sunday saw the franchise score 27.2 million viewers to become television’s most-watched telecast of the week (9/14-20) among households and across all key female demos including women 18-34, women 18-49 and women 25-54. Through two weeks, the NFL on FOX is averaging 20.9 million viewers, up 1% in audience over last year’s season-to-date average.

ESPN laid out blueprints for the 10th year of Play 4Kay, promoting the Kay Yow Cancer Fund, in partnership with The V Foundation and the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA). Five games will again run across ESPN2 and ESPNU on Feb. 21, plus two top-20 matchups as part of ESPN2’s Big Monday series pitting Notre Dame/Florida State and Baylor/Oklahoma on Feb. 22. The action begins on Feb. 21 with Memphis/USF on ESPNU at noon.

Elsewhere at ESPN, the company will unveil Jorge & Jen, hosted by current host Jorge Sedano and Jen Lada, on weekday evenings from 9-11p starting Monday on ESPN Radio. The program will be available nationally on ESPN Radio, espnradio.com, the ESPN app, SiriusXM, Apple iTunes, Slacker Radio and TuneIn.

FOX Sports will move its analysts out of the booth and onto the sidelines for Saturday’s Rice/Baylor matchup at 3p. The game will be televised nationally across FOX Sports Regional Networks and see Ben Leber focus on the teams’ defensive strategies, while Brian Baldinger will break down the teams’ offensive game plans. Brendan Burke will handle play-by-play duties from the booth and Christian Steckel will serve as the customary sideline reporter.

Broadcasting legend Dick Enberg announced that he will hand in his microphone following the 2016 Padres season, announcing his decision to retire on Wednesday. "In culminating 60 years of sports broadcasting, it has been a tremendous thrill to be the TV voice of my hometown San Diego Padres, and I’m tremendously excited that I will have a continuing TV role through the 2016 season, an All-Star Game year for San Diego. Our family is sincerely grateful to Padres ownership, Ron Fowler and Peter and Tom Seidler, and CEO Mike Dee for providing the opportunity for an extension through 2016. While I have decided that 2016 will be my last as the primary play-by-play announcer, I will always be a Padre, and look forward to a continuing role. Ultimately, with high hopes I’ll be one of the many in line that will someday soon embrace a World Series championship in San Diego."

On the international front, ESPN nabbed exclusive broadcast rights in Brazil for the English Premier League for the 2016-17 through the 2018-2019 seasons.  The agreement includes exclusive rights for all media, including pay television, streaming, VOD and other exclusive content. “The English Premier League is one of the world’s top football properties and we are very pleased to have renewed it and bring it to Brazilian fans for three more years,” said German Hartenstein, general manager, ESPN Brazil. “With this agreement, our coverage of the main European Championships on our networks is one of the best in the market, where fans can watch the most important stars in action during the entire season with best-in-class broadcast production values. “

Fans can submit personal requests for Harden via Twitter by tagging @FootLocker and #PlayMyTweet for the chance to have him fulfill a request. The promotion will then take place on Oct. 8 in Houston, with Harden taking shots using basketballs printed with selected fans’ tweets, if he makes it, he fulfills the request, otherwise he is “safe.”.

To promote the release of a brand-new line of NHL figures and playsets, Playmobile is partnering with the league and Rangers All-Star Rick Nash to unveil the toy line at the NHL Powered by Reebok Store on Oct. 1 at 4p. Fans will be able to see, play and interact with the Original Six line at the event. DIGITAL & STREAMING

NBC Sports Live Extra is seeing record numbers for football season. The company’s Seahawks/Packers matchup on Sunday delivered 20.8 million minutes to become the most for an authenticated event in Live Extra’s history (excluding Olympics) and topping by more than 1 million minutes the prior record set in opening week. In addition, NBC Sports Live Extra’s digital coverage of Georgia Tech/Notre Dame hit an all-time best with 4 million live minutes streamed across all platforms, the most ever for an authenticated Notre Dame Football game on the platform.

FANTASY/GAMING/ESPORTS

FanDuel added leading fantasy eSports platform, AlphaDraft, under its umbrella in a move to gain entry into the fantasy eSports market and marking the first time FanDuel will have a stake in the eSports community. “With over 200 million people globally watching eSports, AlphaDraft gives those fans a way to engage with this burgeoning entertainment product that creates an enormous opportunity for us,” said Nigel Eccles, CEO and Co-founder, FanDuel. “This is sports for a new demographic, with very little crossover with what are considered traditional sports fans, and this acquisition gives us the ability to leverage the expertise of AlphaDraft’s team, while helping their efforts in customer acquisition and building awareness of this new industry.  It’s a win-win.”

Speaking of eSports, Activision announced plans to beef up “Call of Duty” competition for players. The publisher is broadening its eSports program in 2016 from an annual tournament to year-round international leagues. In addition, the company will pump up the prize pool from $1 to $3 million.
